BlackPit, to privacyguides in Google abandons “Web Environment Integrity”

Taking the win. Celebrating the fact there was a big enough backlash to get Google to pull their head in.

Facebones,

I switched back to Firefox and un-installed any chromium browsers at the news.

I will now be talking all credit for affecting this change and sharing it with nobody else. You’re welcome, internet! 🙏

errer,

I did the same thing you did. I’m sure the numbers were modest but Google must have noticed the trend…

runswithjedi,

Same, we did it!

Darorad,

Thank you for your hard work

CowsLookLikeMaps,

Unironically, thank you.

Abandoned for now. Maybe.

intrepid,

Of course. You didn’t think that they would take back a user-hostile greed-motivated feature without an alternative, did you?

DieguiTux8623,

One can use a different mobile OS if they don’t like Android at least.

intrepid,

You’re right - for the time being. But what I’m not willing to do, is give them the benefit of the doubt. They’re just waiting for all this backlash to blow over. Then they will start extending it to other components and eventually to the net, under some other name.

SGG, to privacyguides in Google abandons “Web Environment Integrity”

Sadly with all this evil crap now days, they’ll bring it back in a few weeks or months, rename it to the "won’t somebody think of the children API"with a massive ad campaign saying anyone or any website not using the API are r*ping kids…

Great news, but horribly written article. Feels like AI or someone with a high school writing level.

The original source is much better

theregister.com/…/google_abandons_web_environment…

gravitas_deficiency,

I mean it probably was written with AI.

SummerBreeze,

It is not written with AI

smokingManhole,
@smokingManhole@lemmy.world avatar

AI writes better than that.

SummerBreeze,

I’m sorry to hear you did not like the writing

SummerBreeze,

The main difference between the register article and this one is the register is optimistic that Google will stop. While as the comments in this chat clearly indicate alternative views.

Blizzard, to privacyguides in Google abandons “Web Environment Integrity”

I don’t believe them. They will try to do it again, slightly modified, under a different name, but they WILL try to introduce it again.

gravitas_deficiency,

And for round 2 they’ll try to be sneakier about it

intrepid,

No. That’s round 3. Round 2 is already announced - they are ‘restricting’ environment integrity to multimedia on Android webview. Of course, what they don’t say is that the feature is going to be developed and tested outside the view of the general public - since this doesn’t need to go through a public standardization like web specifications. Once they get that perfected, they will silently expand its scope outside webview and gradually into browsers with a new name. That’s round 3.

  1. If privacy is of utmost concern, we recommend that you refrain from communicating any personal data to us since plain-text email is not a safe media for communication. If necessary, use PGP-encrypted email.
  2. We do use a third party to operate our email service, so we remind you to carefully read #1 again.

LWD,

They oughta say who though.

anamethatisnt,

I can agree on that, but their dns already do for anyone who is interested to find out.

A long screed but has this jackhole who writes so unprofessionally even reached out to Mullvad for comment or explanation? Because that’s usually what respectable journalistic outfits do.

They don’t post some screenshots, make inferences without knowing all of Mullvad’s backend, and say “what we are saying is definitely true and there’s no possible way we could technically be wrong.”

I can think of several ways they could be wrong, it would have been helpful to have any statement from Mullvad, because they might have a technical reason for this (up to and including making sure their emails aren’t disappeared as spam, because running your own email server sucks.).

Anyway, pretty unprofessional and makes me pretty skeptical of the claims until more solid evidence than a screenshot surface.

For example, who is to say that Mullvad hasn’t set up their own client side encryption keys? This is an option Google offers for use with business accounts. This effectively means Google doesn’t have your keys nor can read your emails.

It took me five seconds of searching to find this. Did the guy who wrote this article even try?

Disgusting piece of craps! All should continue to open eyes, against google. They wont stop!

intrepid,

While I agree with that sentiment, I really wish people use something other than YouTube. I wish peertube or even paid platforms like nebula take off.

    I would personally ban/defed from Monero.town because it’s a scam-ass crypto instance.

Every time I see a “guide” like this it’s always from a monero.town user. The last guy who was posting “reviews” was bitching about how he got stiffed paying for a game or something with crypto, and nobody had any sympathy because when you don’t pay with real money you don’t get the guarantee of a service rendered.

xela, to privacy in Mullvad uses Gmail

…because why would you go to all the trouble to pay Mullvad (presumably to keep your sensitive information away from big tech) to then give it to google in the form of an e-mail should you reach out to Mullvad for support? Google would then suck up any and all data that comes via their gmail service.

    moreeni,

What? I’m really struggling to see why this comment is upvoted and the article is downvoted. The article doesn’t contradict anything in this comment

    LWD,

It’s because of the difference in credentials. One is a website positing as having both privacy and cryptocurrency investment advice services, and the other is a random Lemur

sphere_au, to privacyguides in Google abandons “Web Environment Integrity”

This was an utterly terrible idea to begin with and it’s still a terrible idea for Android apps as well. Apart from messing with ad blockers, this has the ironically “helpful” feature of allowing malware to be force loaded into your browser. If it ends up in Android, some popular app that uses it will get owned and then every user of the app will also end up getting owned as well.

    Boomkop3,

Google is already sort-of imposing similar restrictions on Android trough their near monopoly on the play store and play protect

    Boomkop3,

Great idea for Google, terrible for everyone else

I have the GL.inet Beryl router, absolutely the best addition to my travel tech. I’ve considered upgrading to a newer model for faster vpn for torrents, but this can still easily run off a 2.4v usb battery pack and handles everything reasonably.
