solstice, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I find gyms insufferably boring.

I play an intense competitive sport which burns easily 5000 calories a week, keep a reasonable diet, and do stretches/cooldowns according to my Dr and physio. Then at home I do a pretty basic routine of squats, push-ups, sit-ups, and stretch band exercises. I don’t smoke and barely drink anymore either.

I’m 38 and that keeps me in great physical condition, healthy weight, nice muscle tone; plus I’m energetic, and mostly injury free. I’ve also noticed I’m aging significantly better than my stagnant friends and colleagues.

Find a sport you enjoy and go all in on that.

Try these steps:

  1. Logout via Home -> Hamburger menu -> accounts are at the top, click there and sign out. Try signing in, did you win?
  2. If not, sign out again then long-press the app icon from your android launcher screen and select App Info, or find another way to get to the android settings screen for Jerboa and Clear Cache and Clear Storage. Try to log in again, did you win?
  3. If not, sign out again and sign back in. Did you win?
  4. If not, cry because I’m stumped. You could also try liftoff, which if you weren’t logged in prior to yesterday shouldn’t have a cached broken session. Or install the PWA from lemmy.world via Firefox mobile. Or use the brand new Voyager setup at m.lemmy.world again as a PWA via Firefox mobile. Of those, I like Jerboa and liftoff best.
KingBoo, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

It’s delayed gratification.

I hate working out. It feels like shit. It hurts. It takes time. It’s not fun.

But this is so much better than looking like shit.

I’m weight deficient for a man. Had to deal with a lot of comments from not being a real man to bring viewed like a cartoon character to some women.

Every time I want to stop a set early or not workout that night, I hear all the haters and I run back to my routine.

I do it for them. And it works.

ChaoticEntropy, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?
@ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk avatar

If I’m not asleep by a certain time of night, “hour of the wolf”, then I find it very hard to sleep without something in the background. Usually I use the sound of a babbling brook that I recorded while in Iceland.

Check out vger.app ; it’s a PWA so it’s “installable” to the launcher.

PriorProject,

The lemmy.world instance has its own voyager install at m.lemmy.world so you don’t have to enter your creds into a 3rd party proxy.

krnl386,
@krnl386@lemmy.ca avatar

Neat! Nice of them to do that. It seems to be a few releases behind, though.

PriorProject,

Yeah, fair. I feel like I recall them mentioning an auto-updater that they hadn’t yet set up but planned to.

Folks that want to get faster updates can certainly use the voyager Dev’s instance… it’s the source after all. For someone like me that doesn’t want to enter their credentials into a 3rd party proxy, I’ve been testing world install of voyager alongside Jerboa and Liftoff and it’s been a solid option.

krnl386,
@krnl386@lemmy.ca avatar

I hear you. I run my own instance in Docker with watchtower for auto-updates. Voyager gets lots of updates, however, so watchtower doesn’t keep up for the time being. Hopefully with time things will stabilize more and there will be less frequent releases.

lagomorphlecture, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

The only place on here that I’ve noticed downvotes is on comments that have been obviously social media shills (reddit or meta) or right wing type comments that are not the type of thing a community should support in my opinion. I’m not saying you’re doing either of those things and if you’re being downvoted in another context I don’t know why.

That said, downvotes shouldn’t really get you down. If you’ve said something awful then you deserve them and should reassess your outlook if you were unaware that your views or attitude were unpleasant. If you’re getting downvoted on a tech related thing then I don’t know what that’s all about but I would try not to worry about it too much because it doesn’t really affect your life, it’s just a fake internet down arrow.

Joe_0237,

Thank you, interestingly the thing that prompted me to ask was a tech joke, all (4) down-votes, I removed a jab at Apple and added a picture and the the responses was positive. The lesson must be one of these: That we have mostly strong apple fans here; jokes need a picture even if it does not add anything; or people look at the vote total to decide their mindset while reading and the first vote was down by bad luck. Or some combination of these.

lagomorphlecture,

Oooooh yeah people love their apple and I think you have your answer!

Buy a live lobster, cut the rubber bands off, and hide in their lunch bag.

That’s a big lunch bag if you can hide in it. Hope it keeps you safe from that angry lobster.

GentlemenPreferBongs, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

It’s turned into the car stereo thing. In 2002, I wanted a rainbow vomit colored faceplate, CD-R and MP3 support, CD carousel in the trunk, a USB port, steering wheel remote

Now I just want bluetooth, an aux in and a volume button.

Until phones merge with a steamdeck or something, there isn’t much to look forwards to anymore.

My phone from 2014 pretty much did everything my current phone can. Certainly nothing worth spending hundreds of dollars on if you have a working cell.

lagomorphlecture, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I enjoy it but different people prefer different types of exercise and sometimes try the wrong one for them then give up. Some people really do love cardio, some feel amazing when they lift weights and get stronger, some prefer a group class or sport. If you’re doing something solo though I HIGHLY recommend adding in music or an audiobook or podcast, especially if you’re feeling like it isn’t for you. That can help if you’re getting bored. Then, switch it up. If you didn’t like the elliptical, try a weight lifting session. If the weights weren’t your cup of tea, try a yoga class or a free yoga video if you just want to try it at home without so much expense and commitment.

pancakes, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?
@pancakes@sh.itjust.works avatar

Coldest would be -60C, warmest about 40C. Funnily enough, these were in the same place (Canada).

Wojwo, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

Well, the research says that therapy is great, but only after you’re on meds. You don’t lack willpower, it’s a physiological problem that needs to be addressed by medical care.

TheAnonymouseJoker, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

I am from India and our summers are pretty bad, and the rainy season that follows up is both humid and a mosquito menace.

Apply mosquito killing creams or lotions. If you are too concerned about them, use natural essential oils made of plants that do this. They cost twice the chemical creams. No matter what you do with windows, cleaning standing waters, nets, electric rackets, you will still end up with those shitty flies making funny noises at your ear when sleeping. Peaceful sleeps and nights.

Use other measures as well, but the body cream/oil will be your final defense line that cannot be breached.

TheSaneWriter, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

If you are wanting to move into a more programming oriented career, then I would say that while a college degree is useful it is by no means required. One of the things that you could do is complete a certification course and then apply for an entry level position, you’ll take a pay cut but unfortunately that’s common when changing careers. What type of work are you currently hope to move into?

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I have to search for a course that would hold weight and not just look like Uncle Slappy’s IT Career School.

TheSaneWriter,

Indeed. I’m certain they exist, but it’s a case of needing to research which organizations are reputable and respected for their certifications.
