DJDarren, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Because the megacorps who make the phones like money and that’s how they get it.

From an individual perspective, unless you can afford it and like having the new phones, there’s basically no point in upgrading every year.

Zerlyna, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?

Atari 2600: combat and ET

Thoth19, in What is the best peice of media you ever interacted with?

Reverend Insanity is probably a strong contender. The world building is super well done. The characters actually plot against each other. Not just the protagonist. It feels very lived in.

Princess bride the book. Indigo and fessik backstory. Parentheticals. The author tone and style is so much fun.

kamiheku, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?

Mine was an IBM 286 system. Played Commander Keen, Jill of the Jungle, Duke Nukem (1)… It was magical.

thisowlis, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?

Super Mario Land on the original Gameboy.

I invested so much time in this game as a kid and when i replayed it some years ago i was shocked at how short it actually is…

crossfadedragon,

i was put off by it myself because of the graphic style. i beat it but liked mario land 2, and wario land more.

The Google Pixel 7P that I have now I bought because I dropped the 6P on the ground so bad that it wouldn’t even start. The 6P I got because it had significantly better camera and was faster than the OnePlus 6T I had before. I know you say 100mp doesn’t make a difference from 12mp but there’s really a huge difference in image quality with the Pixel compared to the 6T, especially in low-light conditions or when you zoom. And it’s not just me, people have been commenting at how good the pictures are without even knowing what phone I own.

I also enjoy new features like the gestures to control apps. Overall, apps and the OS get slower because new features keep being added, and security updates stop coming, so I need to renew the hardware to keep up. I use the phone for hours a day every day, all year around, so I think it’s worth putting some money into it. But I don’t get a new one every year. Maybe 3 years, or possibly 2 years depending on what gets released.

fruitywelsh, in Posting: Hit and runs

I only respond to comments when I have something to say. If people leave comments that have no room for me to add I just vote up or down and press on.

My 4 year old iPhone XR is holding strong, so im gonna keep it a couple of years more!

bootyberrypancakes,
@bootyberrypancakes@lemmywinks.xyz avatar

iPhone XR gang woo! Mine still works perfectly fine but I’m worried that iOS 17 is gonna be the last version for the XR :(

pavnilschanda,
@pavnilschanda@lemmy.world avatar

iPhones tend to last a long time for some reason. They can last up to 7 years.

jack55555,

My XR that I bought on launch was still going strong in its third year, until I dropped it in a lake. Only 20 cm deep, for 3 seconds, but it was enough to kill the screen :( I would probably still have it if that didn’t happen.

PlutoniumAcid, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

I have found it useful, even healthy in stressfulness work situations, to allow myself the distraction - but only for a little while. This works fairly well for me.

Do one other thing. Play only one round of Minesweeper (yes, that’s me). Read only one thing on Lemmy. Pick one of those. Then get back to work. For a while, anyway.

jandar_fett,

If I am trying to get things done (write emails) do important research, ya know that kind of thing, I sprinkle in the things I want to do like procrastinate on lemmy, look up random shit, eat a snack, and then get back to the work at hand

hsl, in Is Lemmy planning on adding commands for maintenance tasks?

This would be a better fit for !lemmy_support.

impulse, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper

Most papers will be in PDF format and may contain colors as well. E-Ink is slowly getting there, especially with the rise of digital comics, but for the time being I wouldn’t trade my iPad and Pencil combo.

zerbey, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?

Hottest? Somewhere around 50C. Coldest? -25C.
