Sendpicsofsandwiches, in What's the worst thing you've ever smelled?
@Sendpicsofsandwiches@sh.itjust.works avatar

I often have patients who are uncontrolled diabetics. Their feet essentially rot off of their body if it gets bad enough (diabetes destroys blood circulation, and the feet usually get it first because they have the least blood flow), and the smell is something that text cannot describe. They are also essentially always infected, so leaking pus adds to the multisensory experience.

free_owl716, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

No, I’m replacing it with Lemmy.

Dantpool, in If you could witness any historical event firsthand, which one would you choose and why?
@Dantpool@lemmy.world avatar

Sure as fuck not the fuck-ton of them that have gone on in the last 8 years.

ricecake, in People around the world, do you drink tap water without boiling?

I read a research paper that tested water throughout Ukraine, showing that lead, mercury and other toxic stuff were within standards, but even so I buy bottled water as does everyone I know

Mane25, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

The only time I’d use Reddit now is if I had a specific question about a specific topic that’s only covered there.

As far as browsing for fun goes it’s Lemmy all the way, it’s so much nicer than Reddit.

astroturds, in What's the best Android/iPhone app for Lemmy?

I’m constantly trying out all the ones I can find but so far connect is the only one where I can customise the colours. I love me a sepia theme!

Luckily it’s also great in other ways.

Connect also seems the most rif-like, so it’s a clear win for me

MrSlicer,

Kreg, in What is a fun childish thing you still do as an adult?

This is more of a highschool childish, but occasionally I like to smoke weed and stay up till 3am playing video games. Then call in sick for work the next day of course

Riding the grocery carts through the store if nobody is around to hit. Ive slammed into a display once, took almost 5 min to get it back together, and no employees came to help the entire time, but i dont blame them.

pulaskiwasright, in Why are fediverse admins blocking out threads?

Facebook can bootstrap their product with federated content made by users who are in the fediverse because they don’t want to support a company like Facebook. By not defederating, you would be helping Facebook every time you post a comment or make a post because you would be giving Facebook free content to further their for-profit goals.

Edit: they will also be taking fediverse content and displaying it next to ads.

makanimike, in Has anyone else been trying to break their reddit-era habit of downvoting?

I used to downvote fairly often on Reddit as a sign to disagree

that was technically wrong, wasn’t it. downvotes were not intended to be a sign of having a different opinion. but of marking posts that were negative or not adding to the discussion in any way.
I obviously know that this ideal does not reflect reality in any way.
But honestly, this is why I think, over all, social media has probably been a net negative for society at large and political/social discourse. Discussions became binary. Upvote vs Downvote. Like vs Dislike. Nuance seems to be less important. It is all about quick snips and outrage these days.
This behavior of just quickly downvoting differing opinions into oblivion (assuming of course it isn’t a hateful opinion) discourages discourse, and it discourages people to voice even mildly differing opinions. Which leads to echo chambers and this weird public opinion of averages. That in many cases are plain wrong. Almost everyone encounters this when a discussion suddenly revolves around a topic they are well-versed on - much more than Joe average. Then consensus settles on this very mid, tepid kind-of right, but not really.

freamon, in Has anyone else been trying to break their reddit-era habit of downvoting?

For any weird, bigoted stuff, lots of downvotes and no replies is hopefully the message an OP needs to receive to get the hint that they should by plying their recruitment attempts elsewhere. Engaging them is probably the worst thing to do.

I’ve had to remember that there’s automatic hiding though, and do that manually.

Raxiel, in Other than blue bubbles, why do you use iPhone?

My Employer provides me with an iPhone for work use, primarily for remote access.

I was enthusiastic about getting it, as a long time time android user I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, but having interacted with it frequently I really don’t get why people like it so much.

HandwovenConsensus, in What are the bad patterns of Reddit to never repeat on Lemmy?

Outrage bait. Too much of reddit was stories and videos of people acting badly.

Crankpork, in Why are fediverse admins blocking out threads?

Threads is currently in the first stage of EEE: Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. Best to stop it now before it goes too far.

From Wikipedia:

“Embrace, extend, and extinguish” (EEE), also known as “embrace, extend, and exterminate”, is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found that was used internally by Microsoft to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences in order to strongly disadvantage its competitors.
