Rottcodd, in Why are fediverse admins blocking out threads?

No - they’re blocking out any users from accessing the wider fediverse through threads.

They’re entirely welcome to access the fediverse through any of the countless instances that are not owned by grotesquely destructive megacorporations.

dartos,

If you’re in the know, sure, but if the fediverse interacts with threads we could expose literally billions of people to the larger fediverse.

Maybe while the fediverse is still getting it’s legs defederating is the move, but I mean literally billions of people being made aware of the fediverse would be amazing.

Embrace, extend, extinguish

Meta does not like the fediverse and they will do anything to destroy it

Steinsprut, in Why are fediverse admins blocking out threads?
@Steinsprut@szmer.info avatar

Couple reasons actually

  • Meta wants to scrap every bit of data, doesn’t matter if it’s on Threads or networks federated with it
  • They just want a free usercount boost for start, and will remove ActivityPub integration when they feel Threads can go on alone
  • It’s all a classic case of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish

Lemmy.ml just preemptively did it. I think lemmy.world also did it earlier but you’ll have to double check that.

Fisch, in Is there a federated version of Soundcloud?

Yes, it’s called Funkwhale

Google doesn’t have vision or taste in my opinion. They released a million messaging apps and STILL haven’t made a decent one. Its been how many years and they still use SMS on most androids and people have to rely on whatsapp, a Fcaebook app… now they’re releasing their new “standard” RCS which has competing versions some with end to end encryption by default and some without.

They STILL don’t have a FaceTime alternative unless you use whatsapp…

Google knows how to show ads and everything else has so little passion and vision i dont trust any of their services because they love to kill their products

teawrecks,

I understand the “taste” argument, but personally the goal of not having a corporation man-in-the-middle everything I do takes priority. I degoogle my phone to the best of my ability.

Unfortunately, good vision and design takes funding, and there’s not a lot of money to be made from not taking advantage of users.

DarkDarkHouse,
@DarkDarkHouse@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Apple’s hardware sales are about 70% of revenue, whereas Google’s are more like 10%. That’s a lot of funding that doesn’t have to come from user data.

teawrecks,

Harvesting user data is a symptom, mitm and taking advantage of users is the root of the problem.

Saying they don’t profit much from your data is like saying, “they only kick you in the nuts a little bit.”

Bjoern_Tantau,

My counterpoint is that you have to use WhatsApp (I rather use Signal) because iMessage is Apple only. SMS and RCS are stupid. With Signal you can reach users of all devices. Having a messaging protocol that depends on the device used is stupid. And hopefully the EU can end the vendor lock in with messaging apps as well.

@trk@aussie.zone avatar

I don’t even use any Apple products, but I still gotta agree with all this.

How they didn’t do an iMessage style client better than Apple given the fact Hangouts was right there and superior in every way for so long is just… bleh.

Google is losing it. Android is losing more nerd functionality and just copying iOS… but poorly. YouTube Music was better as Google Play Music. “Chats” was better as Hangouts. Where Google Fi at? Where Google Fibre gone? How’s Google+ going?

Even their search results are mostly spam now.

const_void, in What are the bad patterns of Reddit to never repeat on Lemmy?

Calling communities “master race” as in /r/pcmasterrace

Lawyerator, in People of Lemmy, have you ever had what some would consider a "spiritual" experience?

I was in college, it was night, and several friends and acquaintances of mine had lugged a case of beer to a giant empty wire spool that sat next to our campus at the time. The spool on it’s side made for a good table.

Having completed an entire class about world religions, we were set to debate whether Buddhism or Taoism was a more reasonable philosophy.

The girl to my right was definitely engaged in the conversation, but she hadn’t said anything yet. I asked her “so what do you think about all of this?” She looked at me, crossed her arms, and fell backwards into the ground. I immediately said, “holy shit, did you guys just see that?” Nobody else saw the girl. As it happened, the wire spool was on the lawn between the campus and a graveyard.

Maybe I’m nuts or maybe I saw that. Never saw anything like that again though.

luthis,

How did that affect you?

Lawyerator,

At the time, I approached it from the perspective that consciousness in some capacity was possible after death while acknowledging that I had no evidence on the questions of how, why, how frequently, for what duration, etc. I hypothesized that ghosts were whorls of consciousness like the whirlpools in water after the passing of an oar.

I was raised Lutheran, but had been approaching my understanding of existence from what I thought of as a logical perspective. For example, I reasoned that heaven, if it existed as a joyful reward state, must either be essentially finite in duration or must involve eternal dementia based on the notion that eventually you would run out of novel or interesting thoughts or experiences. To remain joyful, heaven would have to either have the individual be dissolved back into the universe/almighty or would require forgetting earlier novel experiences.

These days I tend to just anthropomorphize the universe itself, as the wants of an omniscient and omnipotent being would be indistinguishable from the natural rules of the universe. To quote Roger Waters: “what God wants, God gets (God help us all)”. I figure God wants matter to be attracted to other matter and for electromagnetism to be a thing (amongst other rules of the universe).

It’s not that often that I’m in a car I’m not driving anymore, but when I’m a passenger you can bet your ass I’m imagining a little ninja dude running along side the car, doing sick ninja flips over stuff on the side of the road.

Have you ever had a favourite reference to your joke come up?

Two9A,

I did go to a conference once where they were handing out laptop stickers, and in the pack was a 418 teapot.

Of course, a week after I stuck that to my machine, it died. Telling the laptop it was a teapot didn’t agree with it, I guess.

If you’re not stretching daily, you’re gonna hate life. I’m also not stretching daily so uhhh do as I say not as I do? Lol

notavote,

I can recomend to do just something easy. Find easiest and shortest routine (that lasts 2 minutes, literally) and do it in the morning.

Since I startet it, I feel much much better. It is not like full exercise, but at least muscles don’t hurt as much.

I do:

  • Head and Shoulder Rolls x5 to each side
  • Hip Circles:l x5 to each side
  • Arm Circles x5 to each side
  • squats x10
  • some others similar warm up exercises when I feel like it (ex. malasana squat)

Idea is to move every muscle in my body. It is not hard, lasts 2-3 minutes but makes my day few percents nicer.

z3rOR0ne, in Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?
@z3rOR0ne@lemmy.ml avatar

I was on Mastodon and Lemmy roughly a year before the Twitter and Reddit fiascos. I never was active on Twitter, never even had an account, but I’ll admit Reddit was my jam. I didn’t even use any of the 3rd party apps, I actually did use their main app and had no issues with it (except for the occasional annoying ad on my mobile device…). But when the needless greed of Spez started to show at the seams and the communities there started to divide, I took an afternoon to delete everything from nearly 4 years of posts/comments.

Both Mastodon and Lemmy were FAR less active prior to these migrations, and so I honestly checked in once every couple months. But then Mastodon started showing up in my main news feeds due to Musk’s idiocy, and I knew it was time…

Similarly, when Spez started to make the same decisions, I already knew where the party was likely to move.

I only started using Lemmy again yesterday when Memmy came out as I dislike using social media from my desktop (though I do occasionally).

It’s nice to see so much more activity here now. It’ll probably never get to the levels of Reddit, but hey that can be a good thing in its own right.
