seacocker, (edited ) in Lemmy and GDPR - What is the current state?
@seacocker@lemmy.world avatar

Wither GDPR applies to an individual instance will be up to those running the instance to decide.

If you decide it does, then you need to do a few things. Number one is read up advice on compliance with GDPR.

Being able to delete data alone doesn’t mean GDPR compliance. I’m thinking about the need for privacy notices on sign up, retention schedules for data, lawful basis of processing, records of processing activities… Data subjects have numerous rights, which apply depend on the lawful basis you’re processing under.

I’d suggest that larger general instances might want to read up more urgently than smaller single focus “hobby” instances.

edit: more I think about this, I think there is an moral responsibility for the developers to help those running instances comply. If GDPR does not apply to an instance, it is still good practice to allow uses to delete their data, etc… Also, art. 20 of GDPR is the right to portability. Interesting to see how this applies to fediverse platforms like Lemmy.

PaigePalisade, in What can Lemmy federate with?

I’ve noticed that Lemmy has a hard time federating to non-Lemmy instances. Looking up a user/community on Calckey/Mastodon shows a lot of posts and random things missing.

Candelestine, in Lemmy/Fediverse Karma possible?

This is one of the primary differences between us and kbin. They have a karma system, we don’t. Otherwise the two systems are pretty fundamentally similar.

So, people who wish that have their option. Those that do not, come here. As a result of this basic sorting of the market, you will find that most of us Lemmings are not in favor of it.

grabyourmotherskeys, in Recommend a water pick?

I purchased a generic one. It’s no longer sold on Amazon.ca.

Search for “water flosser” or “oral irrigator”.

I paid under $50 CDN and no complaints.

I have crowded teeth and various issues that mean this is a much better option for me than normal flossing and use it regularly.

YSK that the number of users that is shown in the community overview is the numbers of users from your instance that are subscribed. So in your case that is reddhat.online. (Doesn’t mean that the communities you’re linking to are big, but it does mean that you’re not seeing the full picture. There are places that do contain more general information, like browse.feddit.de.

WraithGear, in How can people prevent the Dead Internet Theory from becoming our reality?
@WraithGear@lemmy.world avatar

I find it odd that it’s multiple times reinforced that its a conspiracy theory, even unprompted. Like its happening, it’s just by what degree would we consider the internet “dead”.

Scew,
@Scew@lemmy.world avatar

That’s been the meta for awhile. Anyone with a stake in something vehemently tries to discredit anyone’s skepticism by calling them a conspiracy theorist. Manipulating high-traffic social media with bots likely pays well.

Each year, Dihydrogen Monoxide is a known causative component in many thousands of deaths and is a major contributor to millions upon millions of dollars in damage to property and the environment. Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:

Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.

Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.

Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.

DHMO is a major component of acid rain.

Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.

Contributes to soil erosion.

Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.

Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.

Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.

Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.

Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.

Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.

Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.
