ULS, in Ending support for Windows 10 could send 240 million computers to the landfill. Why not install Linux on them?

More computers for us poor folk!

Sine_Fine_Belli,

Same here

Why not give the poor some of our old and used computers?

Cannacheques,

Cheaper laptops and old computers for everyone could start with switching to Linux

Trincapinones, in Ending support for Windows 10 could send 240 million computers to the landfill. Why not install Linux on them?

I’ll install linux on my gaming rig when w10 support ends, I hate w11

ironeagl,

Why not try it now?

Trincapinones,

I did, discord was a mess (the systray icon not working and couldn’t stream audio), no parsec host support and other little things.

Yes, there are alternatives/workarounds but it’s too much of a hustle to play some games if the alternative is w10, I already know how to optimize it/solve common issues and for this specific case “it just works”

Sweetie,

Do you mind me asking which Distro you had used? I recently switched from w10 and haven’t had any issues with discord or audio.

whiskers,

Which distro did you use? I have a win 10 laptop and I might switch over to a Linux distro

Trincapinones,

I tried Linux Mint, then I switched to Nobara and I had issues with discord in both, the systray icon not showing green when I was speaking/muted and I was unable to screen share a program with sound (then I looked up and found it’s a discord problem not giving a shit about linux users).

Then the gaming part was pretty messy, specially when I tried to run pirate games or games like league of legends, I spent 2 days trying to make league of legends work with lutris (i don’t play that game anymore so now it shouldn’t be a problem)

The funny thing is that I have a linux server on which I self host a lot of services and I’ve been tinkering with it for +4 years now, I’m pretty used to Debian and Fedora in the terminal, but when it comes to desktop I get lost pretty easily.

By the way, which distro do you use?

CaptKoala,

The discord thing is improving (slowly), also partly it now recognizes Linux games launched from steam, but not proton ones. I haven’t tried lutris or anything yet, but I haven’t booted into windows for weeks now.

I’ve also become more comfortable with Linux in general so that’s likely helped too.

ironeagl,

I also have issues with Discord, they just don’t get the linux paradigm. Running it in a browser seems to work okay though (I use Firefox).

corsicanguppy, in Flatpack, appimage, snaps..
  • ruins single source of truth over installed state
  • thus kills validation and thus consistency and thus repeatability (the holy trifecta of release management)
  • promotes dependency hell
  • promotes redundant installs
  • ’hides’ installs from enterprise management (eg snmp)
  • you will fail the audit

But other than being redundant and risky, totally cool.

juli, in The CEO of PROTON answers YOUR questions! Drive, Linux support, Photos, features, and a lot more!

It’s an interesting and linux centric video about proton

Alsephina, in Redox OS - an OS built entirely out of Rust

Oh my god they rewrote Linux in Rust. Amazing.

baconicsynergy,

Kinda. Redox uses a microkernel architecture and tries to keep only the most important functionality in ring 0 while they push everything else in userspace. It’s great.

sturlabragason, in Zorin OS 17 Has Arrived

Is it me or does most of this look like Gnome? 🤔

just_another_person,

It is Gnome.

sturlabragason,

Well I guess that explains it 😅

@ruplicant@sh.itjust.works avatar

is this community the Peertube channel? through Newpipe i can see peertube comments (even lemmy accounts!) but on that community i see none. also the lammy client might be an issue…?

i’m really exited about this, now i’ll be able to correct people wrong on the internet like i can’t do on youtube videos!!

Kalcifer, (edited )

I have heard that it might be an issue with Peertube’s federation implementation, in that its not properly pushing externally.

is this community the Peertube channel?

Lemmy “communities”, PeerTube “channels”, Mobilizon “Groups”, Kbin “magazines”, and Mastodon “Groups” are all functionally the same thing in the Fedi.

You can follow Lemmy communities on Mastodon as well, it just has a different (bad) UI. That’s why you’ll occasionally see users on Lemmy annoyingly @ 12 people in a reply.

ruplicant,
@ruplicant@sh.itjust.works avatar

yes i’ve interacted with mastodon users here through lemmy, but am still figuring out how i get on the other platforms from here

thanks for the clarification!

now i’ll get a mastoson client to follow communities on lemmy, hop on peertube comments from here and hopefully lurk on mastodon from newpipe muAHAHaHahHahah

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Not sure what you mean by that. You can’t log into a Mastodon server with a Lemmy account. And I don’t think you can follow a Mastodon user from Lemmy. They’re just designed to be separate, for good reason.

ruplicant,
@ruplicant@sh.itjust.works avatar

i meant to comment or just see the content from there, like i’ve seen mastodon users’ comments here on lemmy and lemming comments on peertube

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

like i’ve seen mastodon users’ comments here

You simply follow the Lemmy community (displayed as “groups”) on Mastodon.

and lemming comments on peertube

Just follow the PeerTube channels (displayed as “communities”) on Lemmy. As seen in the OP.

ruplicant, (edited )
@ruplicant@sh.itjust.works avatar

thanks, i got it! i just managed to comment on a video :D

funny thing is that, through lemmy, i can only see my own comments, although there are several additional ones from peertube’s view

EDIT: re-phrasing

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Interesting, my understanding is that they should appear on PeerTube but maybe they have disabled that.

ruplicant,
@ruplicant@sh.itjust.works avatar

they do. i was not clear, sorry

java, in Is Ubuntu deserving the hate?

Use whatever you want, why do you care about what feelings other people have towards Ubuntu?

banazir, in Is Ubuntu deserving the hate?
@banazir@lemmy.ml avatar

I mean, I know that we are suppose to hate it for Snaps and what not but…

There is no “supposed to” when it comes to distro preferences. Use whatever you like, other people’s opinions do not dictate your behavior. If Ubuntu works for you, use that. If anything, that’s the freedom of FOSS. You can take other people’s views in to account when choosing a distro, but in the end it is your decision. I dislike Ubuntu for a few reasons, but I don’t get to dictate to anyone else what they use and why.

If you like rolling release, you could try Debian sid/unstable. I hear it’s quite stable and reliable and, of course, isn’t Ubuntu.

BarrierWithAshes, in Is Ubuntu deserving the hate?
@BarrierWithAshes@kbin.social avatar

It's because Ubuntu is a company-backed distro consistently wants to go their own way. Not just snap but they've done it before with Unity and Mir (and probably others idk).

Course Fedora does literally the same thing and doesn't get any hate for it so idk. It's just a meme.

Personally I don't like Ubuntu because they didnt go far enough into their own ways but thats just me.

bitwolf, in Is there any future for the GTK-based Desktop Environments?

❤️ GTK and Gnome.

I swear the same people that complain about Gmome3+ also complain about Wayland.

Both projects put a lot of thought into their controversial decisions, they’re attempting to learn from their mistakes.

There comes a point where you need to adapt to change. And both these projects have proven their changes are beneficial.
