I have used Linux since 1993 (Slackware, Suse and Debian) and Ubuntu since 2006. I consider switching back to Debian because I hate snap and other containers for Of-the-Line Software and while I can uninstall snap and install a De-Snapped Firefox directly from Mozilla I hate doing this Extra-Work.

Dudes, even the “newer faster” Firefox-Snap is still taking three times as long to start and uses twice as much memory and on my work computer, a Core2 Q9550 with 8GByte of memory, this is VERY noticable. Yes, the system is old but for work more than enough. My i7 is only for games and I don’t mix work and fun.

Oh, and then there is that old neighbour who is using a Pentium4 3Ghz 3GByte RAM, which is 32Bit only. He is like 80 years old and doesn’t want to buy a new computer and his old rig does everything he wants. Ubuntu simply doesn’t support it anymore. Supporting old computers is something Linux does outstanding (Windows 11 dropping two year old systems is fucking sick)

psud,

Is there a good reason to dislike snaps? I think they are inefficient, but that hardly matters today. It’s there a better reason?

What about OS with Linux kernel but no GNU stuff?

MooseBoys, (edited )

Right? Most of the time when I build linux I’m not using GNU because of its burdensome license. Realistically you usually don’t need most of the binaries anyway, and those you do like echo and ls are trivial to reimplement, at least for their common functionality.

fl42v,

Android be like: bionic/linux

MystikIncarnate,

That might be difficult.

Linux was made to run GNU software, and is borderline part of GNU. GNU, likewise, is made open, much like the Linux kernel, so it can run on anything.

I don’t know of any software designed for the Linux kernel that doesn’t also expect GNU.

Look, all I’m saying is that the two are very strongly bonded, like hydrogen and oxygen in a molecule of water. It would take a lot of energy to separate them. Adding to them is pretty trivial, there’s a lot of things that are water soluble by default, but without specific conditions and a lot of energy, they won’t seperate easily.

Honestly, I think the only OS I know of that’s the closest to being Linux but not GNU, is Android.

@bruhduh@lemmy.world avatar

Wayland can’t run on BSD as I’ve heard so GNU can’t run on anything, i may be wrong though, because my source is posts on internet, but as I’ve heard BSD users want x-server support to continue

dukk,

Alpine Linux exists. But yeah, most of these projects pretty much do the same thing as their GNU counterparts, just outside the license.

What? Slackware has a menu-driven installer that sets up a usable system out of the box that comes with all the bells and whistles.
Just don’t try to change anything.

Oh, and the bells and whistles are powered by a steam engine, so you better know your way around ancient tech to use them.

if a shitty new windows version was gonna drive users to linux, it would have happened already....

at least twice.

Blackmist,

Good old Windows ME.

UnfortunateShort,

I’d say Linux today is a lot more interesting. Plus most people still don’t really care about there OS, but some now care about privacy.

That said, I don’t know why you would complain over Win11. Privacy violations aside, it’s much better than 10 imo.

MrBubbles96,

I can think of a few reasons why someone would complain about Windows 11 without touching privacy aspect at all: the number of clicks you now have to do to get even basic things done because they messed with the context menu, and speaking about changing things that were fine before: the (lack of) file explorer Ribbon and the start menu, the ChromeOS looking layout they went with not being to most people’s taste, the need for a microsoft account to even use the thing (tho you can edit the Registry to bypass this and several other grievances, even some i mentioned…why not just have those as settings/options, just saying?) etc, etc

Some of the above changes and then some + just how much of a pain it was to even upgrade to it were enough for me to move to Linux in the first place when i learned about it, so…yeah, I’d say it’s kinda bad when it made an (at the time, but you can argue I still am and I won’t despute it) tech idiot like me permanently move OS’s

UnfortunateShort,

What should I tell you, I immediately liked it more than Win 10.

People also use Android phones and Macs and have Accounts for that. If you seriously believe this is going to drive the masses away, I have bad news for you.

Everything you listed are just small factors among many. I’m quite positive the Steam Deck / Valve are doing more for Linux’s popularity than anything Microsoft did wrong combined.

MrBubbles96, (edited )

EDIT: I can’t read, apparantly lol i read “I liked 10 more”. disregard this first bit. Oh no no, you misunderstand: I like Windows 10. Mostly because I have no strong opinion on Windows 7 and didn’t use anything prior to that (and because Windows 8 was…Windows 8) As an OS, it was pretty fine. My problem was microsoft itself (and well, the changes that 11 brought. The list of complaints was basically me going “you had a good thing with Win10, why the radical changes to something that worked well?”).

I’ve also no delusions that Microsoft making controversial changes is gonna do much for Linux growth unless its something massive, like, “we can’t come back from this” massive–but that’s very unlikely to happen. I’ve said this dozens of times before, I’ll say it again: The only way Linux adoption will grow is if someone can walk up to Best Buy (or Browse Newegg/Amazon/whathaveyou), and walk out with a laptop or desktop with Linux already installed and ready to go + maybe a small tutorial like Fedora gives when you first boot up, since Gnome will probably be the default it comes with.

The Steam Deck was a good first step, but if Linux wants adoption, they have to put out stuff that runs Linux out the box to well-known and used markets and brick and morter shops. Not in the back either, front and center where everyone can see it. Much like Chromebooks, people will get used to Linux and its quirks–but they have to be able to access it in the first place (and by that, I mean i could grab an HP laptop packing Ubuntu if i wanted to instead of one packing Windows 11, not being told “to use Linux, you have to first choose one of many distros that are out there, then go download an ISO file and burn it to a USB”)

Looks complicated to the uninitiated, works fairly quickly and simply to those that are familiar with coffee, but the output is divided between those that believe it to be a superior product for the commitment and those that don’t see it as worth it compared to other methods.

Sounds just like Fedora lol

bastian_5, in Distros bad

I use Ubuntu and that is literally the coffee machine I use… Except I don’t use the actual cups, I’m basically only using it as a source of hot water, and instead I use different cups that are reusable, and just are there to hold the coffee grounds. And similarly, I got flathub on Ubuntu, installed shit to get appimages working, and accidentally uninstalled gnome at one point, which took me an hour to fix mostly because it just stopped at a terminal I couldn’t input anything on, so I had to figure out that I could open up a new one that would actually let me log in and reinstall gnome.

Ctrl + Alt + F3

bastian_5, (edited )

The problem was more that I didn’t even know what I was looking at. It just stopped at a screen with terminal output from it booting up, so I thought it was just stuck… After a bit I found something on an arch forum that mentioned opening up a new terminal instance (or something like that), and how to do it, which led me to realize that gnome got uninstalled.

Once I figured that out it only took 5 minutes to fix, but I only found that after an hour of assuming that it was frozen and trying to fix that.

But think of all the programs that don’t even exist on Windows:)

vaionko,

Not quite a program but I fricking love KRunner. And Kate and Dolphin, though available in Windows, don’t work as well.

boomzilla,

AFAIK the Same situation with KDE Connect which I couldn’t properly exist without. Also KRunner & Dolphin. Kate would be possible but hard AF.

Full on agree with KRunner. One of the MVP applications of KDE. So far none of the alternatives I tried on Windows 10 and MacOS come anywhere close to its power and elegance. Maybe Alfred which I tested years ago.

I could write 10 more paragraphs about why KRunner is one of the most advanced laucher/search/command application but I think everyone should experience it themselves. Best not to over-do it with the KRunner-plugins where an overwhelmingly long search result list could ruin your experience.

Okular is good enough for me. It has at least 3 dark modes and I can hide all the UI in non-fullscreen mode.

boomzilla,

Okular is the MPV of documents it seems. Regarding file-formats and UI. I only use it for PDF’s and I honestly had no clue it can read e-books and so much other formats. Even docx and odt with plugins. Also didn’t knew it has 3 dark-modes. Tyvm for your post.

BTW, I love mpv. It’s minimalistic, supports all necessary shortcuts and can be controlled via Lua script. As a scripter/keyboard-only user it’s perfect.

boomzilla,

Yeah it’s great. I use it for youtube and twitch and I don’t need more than the volume, mute, forward/backward and fullscreen keys to use it. Never touched Lua. Do you use it with MPV yourself?
