People still use fax machines? I wouldn’t even know where to look for a fax machine these days! Is Kinkos still a thing? I think that’s where I had to go the last time I faxed something 20 years ago lol
Most copiers can have a fax card added. And most businesses that need a fax machine don't even do that. They have their VoIP phone service set up a virtual fax machine. If it even needs a physical part it's probably a little black box in a network closet, but now most don't even do that.
Real fun thing, did you know faxed advertisements were and are still a thing? At work we get like 3 random ads each day that come out of the machine.
Old SMS had some pretty crappy character limits so they went with the option that didn't is basically how I see it. Now, LINE is king. I've only used text with like two people ever in Japan.
Old SMS was free though, it used the spare bits in a regular phone call datastream. Meanwhile, the network provider charged you 10p a pop, and far more for any kind of data.
Get a banana hanger. It provides better airflow and keeps the ethylene gas that bananas emit from stagnating around them. This gas is what ripens the fruit so fast. In fact, you can put other fruits around bananas and they’ll ripen faster as well.
The other benefit is that it helps prevent bruising on the bottom of the bananas and makes them last longer as well.
You can have bananas last for up to 2 weeks with this method.
I love the whole thing to be honest. I am happy to have replies days later. Reddit posts would go “stale” so fast and even if you did comment, you were more than likely to be torn to shreds for existing. It isn’t perfect here, but that is because we are people. Getting even half a voice is far better than the anxiety inducing nightmare the Internet tends to be. If I don’t want to argue with someone, I just don’t respond. If I or someone else end up replying days later, awesome!
I feel a lot more comfortable chiming in once in a while here. The Internet will always be the Internet, but getting even a tiny bit of human connection is amazing. Going from letters, phones, AOL, to now is a miracle. We may be fucked as a species, but sometimes the little things are enough.
Now, go watch Contact. That movie is my absolute favorite movie of all time. Ghost hugs for all!
It’s been really great here! I’m just getting started trying to be more active but this post alone has just been amazing (although it may be an outlier). This is the most activity I’ve gotten from any online thing I’ve done, so it’s pretty huge to me!
Everyone here seems to have the right frame of mind for why we’re here and what we left and what to expect here. It’s just a matter of encouraging each other to continue to be active when we can and support each other and the platform as a whole!
This is my delayed response, really appreciate your thoughtful reply!
Also will add contact to my list of stuff to watch (isn’t there such a finite time to experience all the media out there??).
I meant OLED burn in specifically but I suppose a screensaver would technically work, although I prefer the pixel shift hack available on some devices. Does stuff like draw status bar icons with a dithering pattern and swaps the on pixels with their off neighbors. Dunno if it actually works as intended though. The phone that had it got destroyed.
I use an LG C1 as my primary display now. After Rtings video and data on burn in there’s no need for FUD.
Even if I were to use my display for 6 hours a day for 3 years only watching CNN, which is a crazy test, the burn in is minimal. Rtings results. And the LG C2 basically has none, which shows how much better tech has gotten.
Unlike CRTs, OLEDs don’t burn in. They burn out. So you can even out the wear and mitigate it. As long as you run compensation cycles for TFT layer retention it’s fine. You can notice the whole screen shifts a pixel at times, but it’s not often (once every hour?). I use an all-black screensaver that kicks in after 5 minutes.
I wouldn’t trust Samsung’s code though. They don’t run maintenance cycles sometimes. Maybe you can fix it by being on top of when Samsung fails to do it manually, but it’s good knowing this LG will probably last me yet another couple of years. And by then, I’ll probably want a better TV/monitor anyway.
Phones don’t have all these features IIRC. TVs are built for longer use. Maybe that’s intentional.
