0xtero, in Can I edit .docx files without a Microsoft 365 subscription and if not are there any alternatives

LibreOffice will do just fine reading and writing the format as long as you don’t care too much about small formatting/layout differences.

It will also struggle if you’ve embedded other office components into your documents (like excel embedded in word).

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, in Can I edit .docx files without a Microsoft 365 subscription and if not are there any alternatives

How about using the free browser-based tier of MS Office 365 microsoft.com/…/free-office-online-for-the-web - but with an alt email address for this purpose only?

some_guy, in What are some good real privacy podcasts/channels?

Caveat, with Dave Bitner and another guy. I haven’t listened to it, but I know of Dave through another podcast (Grumpy Old Geeks).

Also, they would talk about custom roms for Android, then eventually when the channel got more viewers, the host makes a video advertising Google

Seytonic on YT is great for privacy news, although uploads are infrequent.

found that some of them have a history of advertising NordVPN

That strikes off almost all of youtube TBH, maybe that is a good thing for you though?

They don’t hang out on other platforms like Odysee which is strange.

A lot of youtubers I follow have tried it and left because of the unmoderated comments. That should be a big pro point in an ideal world, but the kinds of people that gather in those sorts of places tend to be quite freeze peachy IMO, and there are barely any constructive comments most of the time.

Some other channels set it up to mirror their YT, and have pretty much abandoned it otherwise.

Platforms like Odysee will probably hit a critical mass of non-freezepeachy users when YouTube really messes up IMO, in the same way Lemmy existed for years and had its own culture, before the migration brought over a critical mass of users with a completely different culture.

Youtube will have to really mess up hard though, probably in a way that cuts off third party apps the same way Reddit did. If you ask anyone in my house to open YouTube… it’ll be piped, freetube, newpipe SB or grayjay, not the official site or app. My partner is a very heavy user of Freetube in particular because its so clean.

Oops I just realised how badly I deviated from your original question 😳

Companies exist to make money.

Therfor, it isn’t a great problem, tbh.

The gouverment my spyy on us just to have as much information as possible to get profiles but companies need you as possible customer. If you never use the side againt, they would not find any use of the data and to store it makes costs. So, they probable delete them after a certain time.

Can they? Yes. Will they? No. Would it be worth the backlash? Also no.

While the other responses so far have good info, none has offered a useful answer. Yes, apple collects data, but thankfully don’t sell it to the world. Buying a new phone isn’t a trivial expense so some of us are stuck for a bit. As a fellow IOS user (for now), I too would like to hear some more options.

The best I’ve found so far is Typewise. They claim to be private and secure but it’s closed source so so knows. Apple gets to review their code when submitting to the app store which says that Typewise collects some data but none of it is linked to the user. It’s freemium. Unfortunately, I don’t like their keyboard. Swipe typing is my personal requirement🙂

airikr, in Open source keyboard for iOS?

Apple and privacy does not come hand in hand.

Apple have their own eco system that are fully closed source. If you want to install apps from another place than from AppStore and if you don’t live in EU, good luck.

If you want privacy, choose a custom ROM of Android that respects your privacy (like GrapheneOS) or (better yet) choose Linux. But to be honest, Android from Google (no custom ROM) do have better privacy options compared to iOS, mainly thanks to being able to installing and using apps with no Google account whatsoever.

And to answer your second question: Is your phone’s keyboard compromising your privacy?

Ente is cool, but not cheap. Immich is free.

What does AI have to do with your NAS being less secure?

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

The Ente suggestion went right under my radar. It actually looks like a really solid suggestion, thank you.

ioslife,

No worries! Curious your thoughts on it if you decide to check it out more.

WebTheWitted,

I’ve used ente on a family plan for the last year and really like it. Although I have the aptitude to run a NAS, the last thing I want to do in my free time is look at a terminal. So for me, ente has been great - pretty plug and play.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

The AI is about my pictures being used to train facial recognition when they’re sitting in the cloud.

ioslife,

But that wouldn’t happen if your NAS is your backup solution, right?

Cipher,

If OP is attempting a 3-2-1 Backup scheme, this is an irrelevant argument.

OP wants to store a backup in a different physical location while trusting that it won’t be used to train AI. They are looking for services that can satisfy that.

sabreW4K3, (edited )
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

This. My NAS does a good job. But if it dies, I’ll lose everything, hence wanting to backup my NAS photos.

Edit: Good job is stretching it. I need to invest in a new NAS next year.

ioslife,

Now that makes sense. Didn’t realize we were talking about back ups!

Any reason you don’t just encrypt before backing up?

Libb,
@Libb@jlai.lu avatar

Not the OP, but I tried encrypting my files before uploading them to OneDrive. Microsoft did not liked that and was constantly bugging me regarding potential threats.

For the moment, lacking any better solution/knowledge, I put DIY encrypted cloud backups on hold (and went back to using iCloud which as far as I understand is encrypted, and as I’d rather not have MS nor Google constantly sniffing my personal files at all) but I will have a look at Hetzner offering. If it’s doable for a non-geek like myself to configure a Storage Box for automated backups, I may decide to use that instead. Being EU-based makes it a + as far as I’m concerned.

nik282000, in Are there any good privacy friendly keyboards for android?
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

So this is definitely not for everyone but Thumb-Key is privacy friendly and designed to be used with just one thumb. I have used Thumb-Key (and it’s predecessor Message Ease) for about 4 years now and they are way easier for me than qwerty, there are fewer buttons so typos are less frequent and you can access all letter/numbers/punctuation while holding your phone one handed.

What made you initially look for an alt keyboard? I have huge problems hitting the buttons on querty and started by looking for a chorded layout.

Prunebutt,

I sawa video on MessageEase and thought it was neat. Also, I hate legacy problems like QWERTY… And things like qwerty on phone screens.

RandomStickman,

Omg I'm so frustrated with QWTY on phones I'm giving this a try now!

Amends1782,

I’ve only ever known qwerty for phones, what else is there lol

bluGill,

Thanks for this. I'm starting to learn it, but already feel like I make less mistakes without autocorrect. Sad as I'm a bad speller.

It's kinda like Japanese keyboards
