LainOfTheWired, in Without a Trace: How to Keep Your Phone Off the Grid
@LainOfTheWired@lemy.lol avatar

Throw your phone out. Get a small librebooted laptop and use an android emulator for any apps.

LainOfTheWired, (edited )
@LainOfTheWired@lemy.lol avatar

I have often wondered if you can take an android phone, drill and rip out all the sensors and radio transmitters, and use wired Ethernet through a VPN router and still be able to use just banking apps as that seems to be one thing I keep a proprietary phone around for.

Edit: I forgot the speaker and the mic though the mic could be classed as a sensor

Lorindol, (edited ) in iPhone is listening

Few days ago I was talking with my wife about groceries, reminded her about buying more cat food. My daughter was sitting next to me, playing some game on her Android phone. Then she chirped “I got a cat food ad! I’ve never gotten a cat food ad before, ever! It’s like the phone heard what you just said, dad!”

Yep. VPN and Adguard are now installed to every single mobile device in my household.

Dislodge3233,

I got ads for sexual assault therapy after I talked to my friend about my assault. I was livid. The audacity to try to make money off assault victims.

bionicjoey, in Google loses antitrust case vs Epic Games. Jury rules Google Play store constitutes an illegal monopoly

How is Google Play, which is easily circumnavigated with things like F-Droid and APKs, considered a monopoly and the Apple app store isn’t?

SSUPII,

You are off-topic. We are talking about in-app purchases percentage rates

ashtrix,

The Apple case was decided by a judge and this by a jury, which makes a big difference

Omega_Haxors,

Pointing out contradictions is the only way to ever get any shit done.

bionicjoey,

How exactly does a jury trial work in a case like this? Aren’t juries supposed to be “peers” of the accused? How can a corporation be tried by a jury of its peers?

a_fancy_kiwi,

In the US, corporations are people

bionicjoey,

Yeah but who are their peers?

Omega_Haxors,

Going off history, fascist dictators.

CaptainSpaceman,

Basically Android makes deals with big companies, Apple charges flat rate for everyone

aard,
@aard@kyu.de avatar

At least in the EU Apple app store is considered a monopoly, and Apple is expected to allow third party stores during next year.

Samsy,

I’m curious how they manage a function like this differently between EU and the rest of the world.

iOS 18.1 and iOS 18.1-EU?

far_university1990,

GPS, mobile network tracking, IP, region the device is sold in (us iphones have a block of plastic where everyone else has a sim card slot), apple store region.

Lot of possibilities

Samsy,

Possible solution are EU exports to the US then.

far_university1990,

Also VPN, fake apple store region. If detected during download/install also RF-shielding to prevent GPS and mobile network (if download, also needs a wifi signal inside the shield to download at all).

Lot of workarounds for lot of possible detections.

Lmaydev,

Because 90+% of people don’t know what fdroid is and can’t get many of the apps they need there.

bionicjoey,

Okay but just the existence of APKs and sideloading means options exist. That doesn’t make a monopoly in my mind

flying_sheep,
@flying_sheep@lemmy.ml avatar

That doesn’t answer the question. Sure, in isolation, Android app ecosystem isn’t ideal. But it’s so so much better at allowing competition than the apple one.

possiblylinux127,

I assume because no one downloads other app stores

NeuronautML,

From what i read about it, Apple has a walled garden but charges a flat fee for everyone and has no special deals. Everyone pays the same and they make a little money off of the store but also the hardware sold.

Whereas Google has been caught treating certain parties differently, such as Spotify, something called Project Hug, where they gave extra benefits to parties at risk of leaving the play store, among other unequal dealings.

So the crux of the question is not about the monopoly itself, but the fact that Google is treating market players differently and throwing its weight around to influence the market to its advantage.

far_university1990,

has no special deals.

Spotify and Netflix technically have no special deal but bypass the fee and are not kicked. I would argue favoritism is like a special deal.

extant, in OneNote Alternatives

I switched to Joplin and it’s been okay, lots of plugins but I’ve stuck to just vanilla thus far. The built in syncing plus encryption built-in makes for easy setup so I didn’t need to setup rclone.

akilou, in I'm looking for email providers that don't require a phone number to use with reddit

Use an alias either through Proton, simple login (which Proton bought), or Mozilla

Cheesus, in Do I need to be a resident of the EU to get their data protection or can I just be a citizen?

Mildly on topic: I recently moved to France from Canada, I’m not an EU citizen, and google isn’t really sure if I’m on vacation or if I’ve moved permanently.

Every single website now asks me about cookie settings. Most have a reject all button, but occasionally I have to manually uncheck some sliders to protect my data. Time well spent.

My parents back in Canada always think it’s some voodoo magic when Facebook shows them ads about stuff they’ve recently been 'talking about (AKA searching on Google.) Duhhh. Thanks EU!

Pantherina,

In the EU it is illegal to save unnecessary Cookies without active consent. So the best you can do for your privacy is use Ublock origin with a cookiebanner list!

But this should only be for EU I guess

rockSlayer, in I'm looking for email providers that don't require a phone number to use with reddit

Reddit didn’t used to force email, try just clicking next. Otherwise you could use one of the dozens of “10 minute email” services.

Good thing I got rid of my Dropbox years ago.

Vanth, in I'm looking for email providers that don't require a phone number to use with reddit
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

Proton freebie account doesn’t have a phone number requirement to sign up. They do say they sometimes require “human verification”. Idk what that means and didn’t have to provide any identifying information to open an account.

Account recovery is a separate question. If you lose access and want some backup option to verify via a separate email account, obviously the alt email address would have to be provided to use that feature.

eramseth, in I'm looking for a privacy respecting vacuum robot

I’ve had several brands. I’m sure none were privacy respecting. But beyond that they’re all crap. They all break down and end up requiring near constant maintenance. They also don’t do a very good job of vacuuming.

Better off getting a half decent vacuum (extra points if it uses bags because… Bagless is fucking stupid) and for little clean up jobs get a manual sweeper like some restaurants use.

Yubikey on a phone?

SomeBoyo,

Yes, it’s relatively convenient with NFC.

Taps4366,
@Taps4366@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yep. Just download the Yubico Authenticator app. Your OTPs wont show up unless you tap your physical Yubikey to your phone’s NFC chip.

Only downside is, the Yubico Authenticator only allows 32 accounts. So i have my most important accounts on there.
