xarexyouxmadx, in Nova Launcher Alternative?

Yeah I’ve been looking for an alternative to Nova myself. I’ve tried many but I just keep coming back for one reason or another. .I have graphene os but the default launcher is a little too plain for me. The search continues I guess. I’ll check some listed here that I haven’t tried. Maybe lawnchair will be worth it when they put out a new release.

notthebees, in Nova Launcher Alternative?

I used trebuchet for my launcher, it’s a lineageos app but iirc there’s a downloader for it. It’s not super customizable but I like it

Anonymouse, in In case you missed it: Fossify (A fork of Simple Mobile Tools)

Thanks for the reminder! I just replaced the gallery. I still have Simple Draw, it appears that there’s no replacement, but I’m not tied to it. What do others use for a drawing/photo editing app?

cupcakezealot, in The Irish government wants to pass a law that could see you or your loved ones jailed for possession of memes, cartoons or any content that could be deemed "hateful".

The law seems well intentioned and I agree with that intent but there is definitely potential for abuse. One thing benevolent governments should assume when drafting legislation is that there will be a government in the future that will try to abuse legislation to hold on to power and word it to prevent that abuse happening.

Still reading through the full text but it is quite broad so that is a legitimate concern.

Edit: The “protection of freedom of expression” part is four lines of nothing.

It’s not clear to me yet if satire is protected. Like is a comic mocking an aspect of religion “hate”?

It’s 40 pages but I will read the whole thing.

Sylocule, in [es] Spanish government is working in a digital certificate to identify adults and avoid minors to access porn sites

We already have digital certificates to identify ourselves on government websites to access services.

Most likely the implementation will require sites to demand the cert for verification. What happens after that is the privacy creep

    tonyn,

Just put the porn on the government websites. Problem solved.

    ExLisper,

This is exactly what will not happen. They clearly talking about different certificate. Read the article.

Salix, (edited ) in Wireguard server recommendations

If you don’t need port fowarding for torrents, I recommend Mullvad.

I swapped to AirVPN after Mullvad dropped port forwarding. AirVPN app on Android & Linux kinda sucks. Linux one is usable at least. The Android one is just bad, but I just use the Wireguard app instead of the AirVPN app.

Lemmyvisitor, in best privacy security based email client that supports third part apps ?

just wanna point out that using a secure mail service won’t help if all your emails are sent to Gmail/Google first and then forwarded to your secure mail

macattack, in What is your tracker stats?

Don’t have any stats but I do use tracker control. Having a Xiaomi tablet, I like that I can also extend functionality to system processes as well (at my own risk obviously).

Maggoty, in The Boost android client for Lemmy is displaying these dark pattern ads pretending to be system notifications. What security/privacy conscious Lemmy clients do you recommend?

I recommend ignoring update requests when they pop up. It’s not just Boost, I’ve seen so many of those kids of ads now that I just go check for updates through the system.

Yes, I’m aware those filters exist, but I’m asking about the practical implications of the set up I mentioned in the post.

sqgl, in ProtonMail Complied with 5,957 Data Requests in 2022 - Still Secure and Private?

I suppose they now keep logs of their VPN service too then.

    ReakDuck, (edited )

Swiss law doesnt allow complying with VPN services afaik.

ProtonVPN and ProtonMail are completely seperate too.

    sqgl, (edited )

Do you mean the law doesn’t allow forcing the VPN service to comply with VPN log requests by authorities?

And what do you mean by “completely separate”?

Proton VPN… is operated by the Swiss company Proton AG, the company behind the email service Proton Mail.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_VPN

    Romain_Ty,

    @sqgl @ReakDuck
    From what I understood :
Under Swiss laws, VPN providers are not forced to log anything.
They also can't comply with orders coming from a foreign country if not approved by Swiss authorities.
If someone is put under surveillance, he/she have to know that.

However, always remind that that's just the law, not what is technically possible. If you're considered as a real threat for an important country, neither Switzerland or any country will protect you.
