Ugurcan, in Are there alternatives to google scholar and google patents?

labbbb, in Here's what telegram's founder say about Whatsapp's privacy

Durov is a suspicious RuSSian who very likely works for FSB. Do not use Telegram at all costs!

Crazy racism

labbbb, (edited )

Where is racism there? I’m Russian myself and I know what I’m saying.

Ok, use Telegram, then don’t cry when they leak your data

Yeah you clearly are a russian and you clearly know what you are saying by those intentional caps.

labbbb,

Haven’t you heard anything about the war with Ukraine?

jacktherippah, (edited ) in I have an issue with how SIM cards are handled in most countries

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that the vast majority of people here don’t have such a threat model. Our threat model is mostly preventing corporations like Google and Facebook from accessing our data. If your threat model is so advanced that you need to prevent tracking via connection to a cell tower (i.e state actors targeting you), the only thing you can do short of putting your phone in a faraday cage/taking out the cellular radios/ not having a phone at all is to turn on airplane mode. This is because your phone still maintains a connection to a cell tower without a SIM card.

ModsAreCopsACAB, in The Boost android client for Lemmy is displaying these dark pattern ads pretending to be system notifications. What security/privacy conscious Lemmy clients do you recommend?

Blokada, never seen a single ad in any of my apps. It’s a battery hog, but it works like a charm since I can’t get access to my router for a pi-hole.

I use AdAway for this

xploit, in The Boost android client for Lemmy is displaying these dark pattern ads pretending to be system notifications. What security/privacy conscious Lemmy clients do you recommend?

I used my Google rewards credit to remove ads in Sync, because I ain’t paying for that shit and they would have expired anyway.

As long as you go out every now and then (to shops or next to shops) and consistently answer the rewards stuff (doesn’t need to be true it seems, just consistent) then you’ll eventually be in the same boat as me and probably many others where you’ll eventually have nothing to spend the rewards on as you’ll have bought all the apps you need and will ditch the rewards in the end.

Well, this makes sense to me.

Dehydrated, in How good/bad is Firefox sync.

mull on android and librewolf on linux

    Great setup btw

Regarding your question: Firefox Sync is end to end encrypted, so you don’t have to worry about it. It’s far better than Google’s browser sync, as it’s encrypted at all (only in transit, but this is standard and it means that Google can still see all of your data)

Coasting0942, in Open source keyboard for iOS?

Apple gets your voice recordings which for various privacy laws they can’t resell. “Yay wiretap laws from the 50s”

As for typing, a quick search, apple support claims that the keyboard cache is only used for autocorrect purposes. How often you use a word and how you like to spell it.

Having it function as a keylogger would give them a headache, from data use, battery life, hackers exploiting it, etc.

And of course the warnings seem targeted at third party keyboards who can add on extra feature beyond IOS barebones.

Coasting0942, in I deleted all my post from my reddit account, can they still monetize them?

Would have been better to run the script that edits posts, just to fuck with the data.

China and Facebook would probably buy it for their own profile databases on every person on the planet.

Chances of that though are unlikely. Both are more worried about short term things. For China spotting dissent and trends on the fly. For Facebook selling ads more accurately.

Engywuck, in Can I edit .docx files without a Microsoft 365 subscription and if not are there any alternatives

My Microsoft 365 subscription is expiring and will not be renewed thanks to you lovely people getting me on the Proton family of software and obsidian for note taking.

I mean… Why would you ditch a service you evidently NEED just because some stranger on the internet told you so?

That said, there’s plenty of offline programs that can work on .dock files, such as OnlyOffice and LIbreoffice (with varying degrees of compatibility with existing files). Good luck!

sio2, in What are some good real privacy podcasts/channels?

I used to listen Michael Bezzel who is the owner of inteltechniques.com . Really nice and educational podcast but he is on a break atm. Check the website you will find bery useful information about privacy.

hperrin, in Does Gboard spell checker phone home on Android?

The spell checker uses a local dictionary. There are other things that it phones home for. IIRC, voice to text is one of them.

WarmSoda, in Can I edit .docx files without a Microsoft 365 subscription and if not are there any alternatives

Doesn’t OpenOffice have the ability to edit Office files?
It’s been awhile, I could be wrong.

    FlihpFlorp,

I wouldn’t know lol but I’m assuming it does since someone else recommended it

As for now tho I’m gonna check out libreoffice and then have open office as a back up now that more than 1 person is recommending it

    floofloof,

I think they recommended Only Office, not Open Office.

v12riceburner, in Can I edit .docx files without a Microsoft 365 subscription and if not are there any alternatives

You can still use Microsoft word web version after your 365 expires. The mobile app has ads if you don’t have a subscription.

    FlihpFlorp,

Like I said I have all these files on proton drive

Assuming I stick with word and don’t move to libreoffice like a few comments have suggested- in a desktop environment is really the only difference that it’s now going to open in a web browser, I’m just asking incase it doesn’t play nice with proton drive
