floofloof,

I find the same thing with music streaming on Spotify. I used to discover lots of new music I liked on it but these days I can’t get it to generate an interesting playlist. It’s songs I already know interspersed with things that are boring. Seems like the recommendations got worse.

floofloof,

I think they have always done that, but maybe they’re just doing more of that now. It seems harder now to find interesting artists I don’t know.

floofloof,

Discovery was always the thing that made streaming services better than buying recordings individually. If these services stop being good for finding new music, then there’s not much reason to keep using them.

You’re not missing anything really. For some reason some people like to say that Mint is a good distro for beginners and imply that you should change away from it when you’re more “advanced”. This is really nonsense. Mint is a good distro. I switched to Tumbleweed because I found one or two things I couldn’t do so easily in Mint, but if you’re not having trouble there’s really no reason to switch. And with tools like Flatpak and Distrobox available these days there’s even less reason to distro hop.

Alright boys, I've been converted to the light side and have installed F-Droid. Now what?

Basically title. I waited on installing F droid for a long time because my phone threw many scary warnings when I tried a long time ago. But now I have it, and I got some fossify apps, but since there is no “Editor’s Picks” on F- droid I dont really know where to go from here....

floofloof,

Alright boys

Do we still do that reddit thing here where we assume everyone is male?

floofloof,

Choose a Firefox-based browser instead for open source.

floofloof,

I use both Firefox and Chrome-based browsers and I haven’t come across any major differences in functionality. What are all these things Chrome can do that Firefox can’t?

floofloof,

Is “favorite” the one you use or the one you know you should use?

floofloof,

Can we arrange some swaps? I’m not getting paid enough and neither are you.

Privacy Concerns on Lemmy: A Call for More User Control (github.com)

I’ve been grappling with a concern that I believe many of us share: the lack of privacy controls on Lemmy. As it stands, our profiles are public, and all our posts and comments are visible to anyone who cares to look. I don’t even care about privacy all that much, but this level of transparency feels to me akin to sharing my...

floofloof, (edited )

On Lemmy any comment you post gets federated out to other servers, so it’s available to anyone who sets up a server. So by design it is not possible to control who gets to see or archive your comments. I could set up a server to permanently archive every comment it sees, and if your server sends me your comment it goes into my archive. Probably people are already doing this for data mining. It’s not clear that you could bolt some kind of privacy control on to this architecture, which is fundamentally designed for sharing.

floofloof,

Makes a change from Visual Studio turning white because it has hung yet again.

floofloof,

IMDb gives recommendations based on your ratings for things you’ve seen.

There’s a Multibillion-Dollar Market for Your Phone’s Location Data – The Markup (themarkup.org)

Location firm Near describes itself as “The World’s Largest Dataset of People’s Behavior in the Real-World,” with data representing “1.6B people across 44 countries.” Mobilewalla boasts “40+ Countries, 1.9B+ Devices, 50B Mobile Signals Daily, 5+ Years of Data.” X-Mode’s website claims its data covers “25%+ of...

Your location can still be triangulated from cell towers. But maybe fewer companies have access to that info.

I use my Yubikeys all the time in OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and Linux Mint - a Yubikey 5 NFC and a Yubikey 5C NFC (mostly with Firefox). I have never had any problems with them. Mint is Ubuntu-based so they ought to work in Ubuntu. Sorry I can’t advise you on why yours isn’t working, but it should definitely be possible to get it working.

floofloof,

I’m afraid I can’t remember how I did it, it was some time ago on a machine I no longer have. There is some advice here:

…yubico.com/…/360016649039-Installing-Yubico-Soft…

There’s an appimage for their manager app there. You might also try using Distrobox to give yourself access to a distro that uses apt, and then add Yubico’s PPA and install the software from there. I don’t know whether it would work but in principle it should.

It seems to be characteristic of the Gnome project’s philosophy to do things in what they consider the best way rather than the way a new user might expect. It’s an admirable commitment to deliberate design rather than copying, but it may also make it unappealing to some users. Personally I don’t enjoy using Gnome, but I know people who love it. Thankfully in the Linux world we have options.

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed has been my desktop home for the last year. It’s very up to date, yet it’s somehow solid and reliable despite sometimes receiving hundreds of updates per week. And if anything goes wrong with an update you can easily roll back to a BTRFS snapshot. It has a good repository supplemented by Flatpaks, and I haven’t had any problems finding software, yet it’s not a hassle like some other cutting-edge distros. It uses KDE Plasma by default, which I consider a plus. I came to it from Mint, which was my go-to distro for a long time, but I enjoy Tumbleweed more for its up-to-dateness and configurability, and I have (surprisingly) encountered more software gaps on Mint.

floofloof,

I think they recommended Only Office, not Open Office.

floofloof,

Firefox Focus on Android - just keep deleting history.

floofloof,

They’ve learned from their mistakes, and concluded that Clippy failed because there was no Clippy key.

floofloof,

Oh, those are arms. I thought the moustache was a bit too stylish for the character.

floofloof, (edited )

why I should bother

Bother to do what? As you said, when your distro switches you go with it and notice no difference. You don’t have to bother to do anything.

floofloof,

It still has a better selection than Netflix.
