    I would personally ban/defed from Monero.town because it’s a scam-ass crypto instance.

Every time I see a “guide” like this it’s always from a monero.town user. The last guy who was posting “reviews” was bitching about how he got stiffed paying for a game or something with crypto, and nobody had any sympathy because when you don’t pay with real money you don’t get the guarantee of a service rendered.

kilgore_trout, in BVG out here recommending the best 2FA Apps!

BVG is acronym for Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe, Berlin’s public transport agency.

floridaman, (edited ) in BVG out here recommending the best 2FA Apps!

I self host Bitwarden (Vaultwarden) so I just use the built-in TOTP authenticator in the Bitwarden app. It’s nice to have it all in one place + having auto copy and paste when I log in. And because I self host, it’s all backed up securely and with (as far as I know) no real backdoors.

ETA: just realized what community this is in. people that replied to me I’m sorry lmao, I’m not a nut about this kinda stuff and I’m by no means recommending this just like using it this way for convenience factor and to keep the likes of google out of my password.

    Undertaker, (edited )

Yeah it compromises the idea of a second factor. Bitwarden is the worst choice. It’s only one thing: comfortable

    floridaman,

Fair, although I’ve said in a comment on this account somewhere else, I self host more for convenience sake than anything. I just like having my own password manager, sure it’s not as secure to use it for MFA but it’s better than giving my passwords to Google, LastPass, etc. and then using eg Google Authenticator. Self hosting is more a corporate distrust thing than a privacy thing for me

    Winter8593,

No, please do not do this. Two factor authentication should be just that: two separate factors of authenticating yourself. Having them combined in one is the same as one factor.

    floridaman,

Said in the reply to the other comment here, but I don’t really self host for security/privacy sake. And in addition to that comment I’d also like to say that I do use a YubiKey when possible for MFA. I’m not a security nut enough to care about TOTP (which kinda sucks anyway) all too much but for important things I do use physical MFA.

  • Dislodge3233,

I have a really long password on Bitwarden like 30+. I use OnlyKey to store this password on a hardware device.

You mentioned phones. My problem with using another 2FA app is that it’s still on my phone.

    ideonella,

I do the same thing. And Bitwarden’s 2FA is off my phone. In a complicated world, it’s reasonable to keep 1 password + 2FA as secure as possible. I simply can’t handle the hassle of pulling out my phone for every 2FA login, but still value the protection 2FA + randomly generated passwords provide.

Gooey0210, in Governments spying on Apple and Google users through phone notifications, U.S. senator says

Just don’t use push, almost all of the privacy respecting apps have their own notifications

And also, there’s ntfy for some (hope to be more widespread)

rebul, in Automakers’ data privacy practices “are unacceptable,” says US senator

Typical Washington bluster for optics. Auto manufacturers and their unions contribute too much money to politicians, nothing will be done.

ioslife, in Is Proton Unlimited Worth renewing?

I downgraded my sub to Mail Plus about a month ago. I had hopes for Drive and was using VPN too, but Drive wasn’t working well for me.

I self host Bitwarden, so never was interested in Pass. I also self host Nextcloud, so I don’t need Drive.

Switched over to Mullvad for VPN.

With downgrading, I had enough credits to cover my subscription of Mail Plus for 2 years.

    glowie,
    @glowie@h4x0r.host avatar

Mullvad was throttling my iptv connection. Ironically, from the same data center, using Proton the streams weren’t throttled. So not sure if Proton is paying a premium for better bare metal and uplink or what the deal was with Mullvad. Hope you have a better experience.

adespoton, in What are some good private email service?

It’s sad to me that the answer can’t be “the one you run yourself.”

There’s theoretically no reason why everyone couldn’t run their own mail service who had a domain name. But with spam practices being what they are, self-hosted mail will get binned in most places.

    eek2121,

You can, but it is difficult. Spam prevention has made life hard for those that want to host email.

    @RandomLegend@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

can they please just like… don’t?

    BestBouclettes,

That’s what happens in a quasi monopoly. They would suffer no consequences from it and the others like Mozilla would just have to follow along.

    Knusper,

Mozilla will want to be API-compatible, but there’s nothing inherent to the API that requires the arbitrary content-blocking limitation that Google put in. So, Mozilla will be API-compatible without adopting this shitty limitation.

  • Knusper,

Interesting, I didn’t know that, but it doesn’t really change anything about my comment. Mozilla can offer APIs in addition to what Manifest v3 offers, allowing extensions that want to do these things to do them. It’s already the case today, for example, that uBlock Origin makes use of additional APIs for more effective ad blocking on Firefox.

Seems like something they can’t stop pushing because … reasons.

    Vexz,

Why would they want to stop? This is their fight against adblockers and on Chromium based browsers it's an effective way so of course they keep pushing. ;)

    1. Use osmand or opentracks instead. Opentracks is strava without (social) sharing
    jlow,

Or Fitotrack, which has an even nicer dashboard (with horrible colors, unfortunately) to screenshot and send to friends to brag (not that I’d ever do that ^__^)

    beta_tester,

Iirc opentracks works better with import/exports. Apart from that, both do their job.

    lemann,

I switched to Osmand when my bike computer got stolen and tbf I prefer Osmand, especially with the widgets and stuff set up for the cycling profile

    FutileRecipe,

Which OpenTracks? Google PlayStore has two.

    jlow,

Yeah, true. But maybe the perfect time to try the new translation feature in Firefox? ^__^

    magnetosphere,
    @magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

I don’t like or trust software translation. It’s often clunky, feels unnatural, and misses important nuance.

    DarkThoughts,

Then use an addon that uses translation services like Google or DeepL? Or hire an actual translator if you feel that's also unacceptable.

MasterBuilder, in It seems Gen Z is just fine with parents knowing where they are all the time

    rolls D-100 … I disbelieve!

    echodot,

I never cared that my parents knew where he was because I was never trying to do anything particularly nefarious and my parents weren’t completely buttheads.

But this was pre mobile phone days (my first phone was a Nokia Ngage), so if I went out they wouldn’t be able to contact me in an emergency so it made sense to say oh I’m going to x house here is ther phone number. Now that mobile phones exist maybe that requirement no longer exists.

    MasterBuilder,

That is a trust based transaction when parent asks where their child is going as well.

Putting tracking malware and using surveillance all the time is invasion of privacy, teaching the child that surveillance is okay, and completely lacking a trust relationship, which is bad within a family.

capital, in Cars are a 'privacy nightmare on wheels'. Here’s how they get away with collecting and sharing your data
    1. What part do I need to disconnect to stop the transmission of this data?
    2. Would #1 cause my car to have any issues in it’s day to day operations?
    thanksforallthefish,

1 Varies by brand and model, but usual a cellular connectivity module, aka telematics. Some cars you can simply pull a fuse, some make it hard

2 Killing the telematics by pulling a fuse can cut off inbuilt navigation functions or the entire display and control system depending on how integrated it is. Work arounds can include pulling the GSM module or faraday caging the antenna.

Need specific models for more specific answers.

Element became unusable for me when I realized that it takes around 18% of my phone battery per day while being idle in the background without being opened even once. Absolutely insane for a simple chat app.

Wanted to like neochat and I still use it as I use KDE, but functionality is limited with no VoIP or jitsi, there are always a bunch of visual bug like gigantic icons, or other bugs like content not loading so all you get is a bunch of chat room use profile changed or enter/exits…

Maybe I should swap to fluffy chat in everything.

Hopefully that battery usage gets better when they upgrade to what is currently Element X.

    caseyweederman,
