Cossty, in What is xtrapath3.izatcloud.net, why does my phone connect to it?

I asked very similar question here.

lemmy.world/post/7424307

The address is diffrent because you have older phone.

db2, in What is xtrapath3.izatcloud.net, why does my phone connect to it?

Is *.xtracloud.net related? I found it in my logs.

Yeah, It’s izatcloud.net related.

lemann,

Yes, it’s the newer version of the two. OP has an older device

chemicalwonka, in What do you use for cloud storage and why?
@chemicalwonka@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I don’t use cloud storage anymore I migrated all my files to M-Disc

Lemmyfunbun,

What is M-Disc?

Extrasvhx9he, (edited )

Iirc theyre these expensive discs that are highly resistant to disc rot (or something along those lines) for at least 1000 years. Kinda gimmicky tbh since it still needs to be stored properly to achieve that claim and suffers from the same problems as any other optical disc (the equipment needed to read and write and still durability)

shalafi, in What do you use for cloud storage and why?

I just pay Google $99/yr. for 2TB of storage. I have my Google Drive mapped as G: and Windows libraries mapped to folders in the Google Drive.

Super simple and cheap. I still have local backups for fast restores, and Google for cloud.

johntash, in What do you use for cloud storage and why?

Self hosted nextcloud works great for me. There have been a lot of improvements over the last few years, handling conflicts doesn’t feel as clunky and I don’t really run into as many unless I’m storing git repos in my NC directory.

hayhay,

I’m curious, are there any ways to just not backup directories in a .gitignore type of way? I started trying out filen and this single feature is just very very compelling for me

I haven’t used NC in a while but the improvements seem good at first glance!

  • hayhay,

    On their roadmap I think I saw they were going to bring support for it? But yeah I wouldn’t trust that until I see it. It’d be annoying to transfer over all of my data from DB to filen if I were to go that route, but at the same time rclone already supports Proton Drive, but the mac app still isn’t here.

    railsdev, in What do you use for cloud storage and why?

    Storj, specifically using RClone and the native Uplink CLI (vs the S3 gateway). Super cheap, P2P, built-in client-side encryption are what keep me on it (and steering clear of the nightmare that is AWS).

    kurcatovium, in What's an easy way to remove metadata from a .mp4 file? [Windows 10]

    I would probably use something like Musicbrainz Pickard or some more feature rich player like Foobar2000.

    LinkOpensChest_wav,

    Haven’t heard of either one of these, thanks! Musicbrainz Pickard looks pretty intuitive based on the screenshots, and I like that it’s also available for Linux. I’ll try that one first.

    kurcatovium,

    Yeah, I use it on linux too. I’d substitute Foobar for Strawberry player on linux for playbacl and tags editing.

    MiddledAgedGuy,

    My two cents is that it’s a bit unintuitive, but ymmv. It’s not overly difficult though, and a great piece of software. So do try!

    LinkOpensChest_wav,

    I just used it. It was easy enough to edit/remove metadata, which is all I want to do for now. It reminds me a bit of a Windows 95 era app, which is the time period when I became acclimated to Windows software.

    Anyway, it took just a few seconds to do what I want to do. I’m still quite baffled why removing/editing metadata in a mp4 is unsupported in Windows. It seems like such a basic thing.

    MiddledAgedGuy,

    Glad it worked out!

    Warning: soapbox. I feel like Windows is commonly considered to be user friendly. It may be easy enough to use, but I find it’s quite user hostile.

    LinkOpensChest_wav, (edited )

    I finally got around to trying it, and I’ve realized that the “open with” option is absent from the right-click menu for some reason. I’m trying to find out why, but so far no luck. I checked the registry key, and it’s intact and should be giving me the option. I hate Windows.

    Edit: So after a lot of searching, I discovered that I must have had Notepad++ set up wrong, because I found a registry entry from Notepad++ in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ .bat

    I didn’t want to just delete the value, so I ended up uninstalling Notepad++ from my PC entirely, and the “open with” option returned, and the registry entry disappeared. Notepad++ is a popular app, so I feel like a lot of the people I found by searching who have the same problem might have this app installed with the registry entry to remove “open with” from the .bat file extension specifically. I knew something was up because I tested other files on my PC, and “open with” was still there. So frustrating, but your solution works now! Thanks!

    LinkOpensChest_wav,

    I totally agree with you about Windows. Even Microsoft’s forums are generally unhelpful if you don’t want to use their OS they way they think you should use it. I’m gradually switching to Linux and will not be using Windows 11. Whatever minor conveniences I may miss out on are worth moving to an OS built with users in mind and with a friendly community of people who are actually helpful.

    MiddledAgedGuy,

    Yeah, I have to use Microsoft products for work and I’ve stumbled across their forums for issues before. I don’t think it’s ever once been helpful. Solutions on Linux forums are hit and miss, but still much better.

    Welcome to the Linux community!

    LinkOpensChest_wav,

    Thank you!

    Eccitaze, in Is there any point in using NoScript if you already have uBlock Origin?
    @Eccitaze@yiffit.net avatar

    I keep NoScript around because there’s been a few times where I clicked a bad link and NoScript blocking JS by default has saved my bacon. Plus, a lot of services like twitch serve ads through separate domains that I can block from running entirely with NoScript–the entire time people were complaining about Twitch trying to bypass adblockers, I never once saw a single ad.

    TheButtonJustSpins, in What's the most private way to create and use Instagram?

    Do you need to post, follow, or just have one?

    Axl,
    @Axl@lemmy.one avatar

    Preferably all 3. The whole experience. Notifications not necessary.

    14th_cylon,

    “most private way” and “posting on instagram” are somewhat disjoint sets

    Axl,
    @Axl@lemmy.one avatar

    Yeah I get that, hence I’m trying to merely maximize privacy. It’s unavoidable unfortunately.

    14th_cylon,

    well, then i would say not having any other facebook apps and important information that could be stolen by the instagram in the phone, or use it in web-browser in some privacy mode or separate container, something like that. use disposable email.

    using wifi in mcdonald is silly advice, i guess you are not being hunted by some secret service, there is really not much somone can do with your ip address, which is most likely dynamic and nated anyway. if you had some fixed ip address that would identify you, that might be another story.

    Axl,
    @Axl@lemmy.one avatar

    I’ve heard of people having problems creating accounts with VPNs, so I’m gonna bite the bullet and disable it for account creation. Then turn it on and hopefully don’t run into problems.

    GnomeComedy, (edited ) in Privacy friendly Ubuntu antivirus ?

    You’d be better served learning how to setup and use:

    • backups (and test them)
    • automate your reinstall (see ansible)
    • firewalld (RHEL/Fedora) or ufw (Ubuntu)
    • fail2ban
    • SELinux (RHEL/Fedora) or AppArmor (Ubuntu)
    • disable SSH via password, use keys only
    • adblocker (like ublock origin) - credit to whale@lemm.ee for the idea below

    I normally setup fail2ban as soon as I know something exposed to the outside.

    GnomeComedy, (edited )

    No, most desktops behind a NAT probably dont need fail2ban (though it wouldn’t hurt).

    Everyone’s security profile/needs are different.

    The point is that list does a hell of a lot more useful than ClamAV

  • GnomeComedy,

    If you think ClamAV on your mom’s laptop on Starbucks WiFi is doing anything useful, but you think fail2ban isn’t - you’re naive.

    On phishing - you’ve got another great example. ublock origin or any other decent adblocker will do WAAAAY more to help than ClamAV.

    neosheo,
    @neosheo@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    For the automating of reinstalls what do you mean?

    Is it just a playbook that installs the distro, them installs the same packages, and then restores things like /home from backup?

    GnomeComedy,

    That, and:

    • put down config files that were modified
    • enable/start services that were installed
    • modify the firewall to open necessary ports

    Basically: put everything back as it was right before the ransomware encrypted your system on you.

    Then of course - fix what you did wrong that got you compromised. ;-)

    neosheo,
    @neosheo@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    How would you determine the configs that were modified? What do you mean put down?

    GnomeComedy,

    Ideally you keep your configs in a git repo (like github). You know what’s modified because you’re the one who modified them. If you modify them - put that config file in the git repo.

    As for “put down” I just meant copied to the system (from github) by your automation (like ansible)
