Eldritch,

This, JFC so much this. The trans care thing was a serious blow to my interest in her videos. That capitalism BS. That killed it dead. Didn’t finish that video, haven’t watched since. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

To be fair, I think her reputation might still be salvageable. But it would take sincere apologies, earnest corrections, and getting back in her ”lane” of experience. As a physicist she’s fine, but not so much as a physician or politician.

Eldritch,

After

Eldritch,

Marxism: A genius body of economic philosophy, but increasingly out of place as time marches onward. I’d be for a by-the-book implementation (insofar as that’s possible) in 1923, but not 2023

One of the most insightful critiques of Marxism I’ve ever seen is that there is literally no solidly prescribed actual economic policy. Marx spoke at length about social policy and issues. Freeing the workers from the bourgeoisie and the bourgeoisie from themselves. But almost never and nowhere. Did he ever go into in-depth detail about economics. Or the economies that we would specifically have to go through to achieve his social vision. Which is what allowed bastardizations like those of Lenin, Mao, and the Ill families neptocracy.

Specifically ignoring the stateless part of his stateless, classes communism. Conflating the state that shouldn’t exist with the workers who were supposed to own the means and tools they used for production themselves. Etc.

Eldritch,

Why wouldn’t it work?

Eldritch,

Friendly reminder that Communism isn’t communism. Communism is “nominally” socialist, 100% authoritarian ideology that completely disregards most of what was supposed to actually define communism. You are accurate in calling it, especially in China’s case, state capitalism.

Where as communism is 100% a type of socialism. And ultimate end goal of most socialist ideologies. Basically Communists are communists in the same way capitalists are libertarians.

Eldritch,

Capitalism is barely a few hundred years old. Invention is as old as human history. The Soviet’s despite the brutal social oppression and mass murder. Beat us at every step of the space race save for the last. Researched and discovered a number of the elements of the periodic table. And many many more things.

That you think people invent things only looking for a reward or payout. Really screams that you don’t understand inventors or invention. Nikola Tesla one of the greatest inventors of the 20th century. Died destitute chasing his inventions, with little focus on getting paid.

I could go on. But I hope reality and history generally disagreeing with you is enough to make you reevaluate the propaganda. You’ve been inundated with all your life. Capitalism does little to actually help invention. And people would do it even if they never got paid.

Eldritch,

Yes though those would definitely be the Lenin Mao etc camp. Not the overarching ideology as a whole. So it’s confusing that they’re applied twice. But yes those of us even on the libertarian anarchist side do have our own concepts as well. They just aren’t baked in to the ideology as a whole.

Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs. (sh.itjust.works)

Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.

Eldritch,

The Mandalorian had overall been excellent. Really enjoyed that series. Absolutely hated the way they dumped off a good portion of it in the center of book of boba fett. Was not as thrilled with book of boba fett. But it wasn’t horrible. It just didn’t have the hook that the Mandalorian did. Not watched any of the new series yet. But yeah they’re just really wasn’t enough to justify its existence. It could have just as easily been put on hulu. After all they have such a large investment in that too.

Eldritch,

We canceled our yearly subscription in August. Haven’t missed any of the content. I mean I’ve seen what I wanted to regardless. Just not from there.

Eldritch,

There was at one time a group pushing to make a more active up to date. User friendly plan 9. Distro if I remember correctly called Harvey OS. They may still be at it. But such a small group means that it’s going to take a long time combined with a lot of effort. And at this point so many things have moved on and become rather linux specific even. That the task only keeps getting more and more difficult.

Honestly, in the interim, many of plan 9’s better features were adopted in some small part or completely by other operating systems. Definitely not quite as elegantly.

What I really want to know is why is nobody here talking about inferno. It’s what came after plan 9.

Eldritch,

Activity pub and the feddiverse are literally the email of social media. Everyone uses email and has a basic grip on it. You at gmail.com can mail someone at hotmail.com and vice versa. So the host you choose doesn’t really matter much.

Mastodon and other similar clients give you a classic twitter like experience. With linear feeds and no algorithms to manipulate what you see. What you want to see is what you will see.

Lemmy and other similar clients give you a reddit like interface. Again with no complex manipulative algorithms. And the ability for much better moderated and curated experience than reddit.

Peertube gives you a YouTube like interface and focuses on video content.

Pixelfed is a Google photos or similar interface focusing on images.

They’re all activity pub. And can even interoperate. You can post to Lemmy from mastodon etc. Though that’s a bit more advanced currently.

Eldritch,

I’m running Arch on a very early 2000s computer. Dual core athlon with two gigabytes of RAM. With KDE desktop on a period correct display. Works great as long as you are not trying to push it hard with modern tasks. Browses the internet just fine and can even watch videos of a size more appropriate for that era. But yeah, you get into 1080p displays and high resolution videos. Or modern bloated websites. It’s definitely going to chug.

Eldritch,

As old as my system, is. Anything much more modern than what’s already in it would be bottled necked by the system bus. It’s PCIe. Not PCI 2 3 or 4 lol. And SATA, early SATA at that. Still has two IDE headers. But I used to use a lot less to run blender on back in the day. I have it pushing a good old 1024 x768 4x3 display.

Eldritch,

Aborting a non viable pregnancy isn’t and never will be murder. In fact, stopping women with non-viable pregnancies from getting an abortion often can be murder itself. Therefore abortion != murder

Eldritch,

Mastodon is like email for instant messages with permanent conversation threads. That’s about as relatable as it can get. The user addresses are highly similar. It communicates interoperably just like emailed does. Making a single uniform system out of hundreds of different servers. You can be on hotmail.com or gmail.com or any other email provider and mail anyone on any other mail provider. That’s basically Mastodon as well.

Eldritch,

The only appropriate response in the whole post.

Eldritch,

Weeks to see a doctor is better than not getting to see a doctor. And yes your fascist Tories are working like our fascist Republicans would to get rid of it. But only a true gormles plonker would cheer on Sunak and crew.

Eldritch, (edited )

Bigots will always find an excuse to be bigots. That’s not a reason to appease them.

I can absolutely agree that the NHS is not perfect. Getting rid of it would be the exact wrong thing to do however. It absolutely has some issues that need to be addressed. But switching to an insurance only model is not going to address that in any meaningful manner. And I think it’s also important to point out that the claims of waiting weeks for a simple appointment are slightly disingenuous. That’s only if the NHS is your only option. There are private insurance plans and coverage even over there. Having National Health Care does not preclude having private insurance. Nor does having a private insurance mean that you’re not going to be waiting weeks. Currently over here in the land of the free. You have to schedule appointments months out with many practitioners. Unless you’re actively bleeding out or close to death. So private insurance is definitely not some Panacea.

Actually the problems with the nhs aren’t inherent to the nhs. To problem with Healthcare and Society in general. With birth rates dropping across the globe. Far more people are retiring, dying Etc than being born. And of that reduced volume being born there’s simply not enough of them trained and qualified to be Medical Healthcare practitioners. This was something that was always coming.

Also would like to point out. In the US at least. We’ve allowed cocaine and amphetamine addicts set unrealistic standards in the medical profession that drive a lot of people away as well.

Eldritch,

think your inaccuracy comes from linking currency with capitalism, which a lot of people do.

To quoth my first post in this thread.

Capital, markets, and currency. All existed before capitalism.

Also, I’m generally anticapitalist. Perhaps you meant to reply to someone else? I’m of the school that thinks we should abolish the concept of unlimited private property in favor of something like personal property with much more reasonable limits. And think capitalism should only be allowed with regards to unique items that aren’t generally “necessary” for society. Paintings, tchotchkes, etc.

Also your definition of communism is a bit exclusive of actual Libertarians and anarcho-communist. Isn’t it? I think you are referencing leninist theory? Which has never held up in practice. The rest of it though generally tracks.

Eldritch,

Capitalism does not work reasonably well most the time. Unchecked it leads to countless busts and Booms that leave the average person destitute. You really should look into the history of the early 20th century. The only reason we even still have capitalism. Is because of two massive world wars. Slaughtering and grinding up many tens of millions of people. As well as passage of basic Social Security nets. We’ve largely at least abandoned the spirit of. If if not in practice as well.

Capitalism has been a failure at every level. Constantly. That isn’t a justification or Praise of leninism. There’s a lot of other ideologies on the Socialist side Beyond leninism. And they don’t require large National level government. Look into them sometime.

Eldritch,

First their SSL certificate is misconfigured second my DNS here at work is blocking access to it for now.

Second. Economics psychology Etc are not any sort of hard science. They struggle to even show correlation sometimes. Let alone causation. And statistics is certainly not a science in and of it self. Making your confident claim of scientific literature adorably naive at best or wildly spacious at worst.

Combined with the fact that I have strong doubts that this study includes actual honest studies of socialist economic structures. Typically it’s just “leninism bad hurt durr”. Which I agree with. But Leninism==socialism. Did they actually go out and survey communes? Or honestly categorize social democracies? Most of these so-called BS scientific studies don’t.

And honestly I could link you any number of studies showing the countries with strong support for labor and protections for labor have a much higher satisfaction than countries that don’t. The problem is I don’t believe you’re being honest. And that that would be a waste of time. But you are welcome to go to Google and search if you’re interested.

Eldritch,

Democratic socialism, Social democracy, original libertarianism of the non Rothbard variety, even pragmatic anarchocommunism. As long as they aren’t dogmatic ideologues.

A completely free market has never, and will never exist. Further markets, and currency existed before capitalism. Capitalism didn’t make them possible. Finally capitalism demands you sell for as much as the market can bare, not what is fair for the value you added. Of which capitalists generally add none. Without labor nothing gets done.

Under capitalism people that generate most of the value get the least of the capital. It’s just a more abstract way of defining and justifying oligarchy. Other than Divine Birthright.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for rewarding people who come up with new processes and ideas to increase efficiency etc. That’s not really what capitalism does.

Eldritch,

Ah the old deflect to a straw man argument. I never insinuated your age.

Eldritch,

It’s more commonly referred to as left libertarian these days. However it far predates right wing libertarianism. And for myself at least. I personally feel that calling original libertarianism left libertarianism, and right wing libertarianism right wing libertarianism gives right wing libertarianism far too much legitimacy.

Libertarianism is and always has been a left-wing ideology. These so-called right wing Libertarians(neo-libertarians) have much more in common with liberalism than libertarianism. And equally ironic. Those that we call liberals{neo liberals) in the United States for instance. Often have more in common with actual Libertarians than “right-wing” Libertarians do in many instances. Though there’s still a good dosage of capitalist and even fascists under the moniker of the Democrats too.

The whole situation is super complex and wildly cloudy due to bottomless pockets for propagandists unfortunately.

Eldritch,

lol objectively one of the dumbest replies I’ve ever seen. But whatever. A full on autistic person could reason circles around you let alone someone with HF-ASD. Because after all you can’t address a single point. All you got is calling names.
