Somehow unrelated to what this video proposes, Linux has taught and gave me so many possibilities that I would never, ever be able to if I (still) were using Windows to this very day. In other words… thanks to Linux, I can now operate and have fun in a under 3W device.

Popularity =/= quality tho. See: Windows. :^)

GustavoM,

Indeed! I’m not planning to go back to Winblows unless I’m being paid for it.

Eh.

Alt + F4 to close running commands

Alt + enter for full screen

Alt + (arrow key) to switch between windows

Alt + p to run bemenu

thats it

Is it actually dangerous to run Firefox as root?

I have a few Linux servers at home that I regularly remote into in order to manage, usually logged into KDE Plasma as root. Usually they just have several command line windows and a file manager open (I personally just find it more convenient to use the command line from a remote desktop instead of directly SSH-ing into the...

That’d be the same as asking if leaving your house front door open is dangerous – it depends. If an ill-intended individual sees it open however, s/he won’t think twice to trash your home.

Gentoo goes Binary (packages) (www.gentoo.org)

To speed up working with slow hardware and for overall convenience, we’re now also offering binary packages for download and direct installation! For most architectures, this is limited to the core system and weekly updates - not so for amd64 and arm64 however. There we’ve got a stunning >20 GByte of packages on our mirrors,...

Gentoo “purist”: “Welp, Gentoo is now officially dead.”

Non-gentoo user: “Welp, Gentoo is now just another Arch fork LMAO!”

Cpupower can both show cpu info -and- tweak it, so nope. Not really.

Thanks for your input tho.

Yeah… I’d rather spend some time doing those manually and not risk losing money (or even worse) because of a mere couple seconds less on the internet.

Been using Wayland since 3’ish years ago and my desktop experience has been really smooth – no crashes, errors or anything of the sort. Everything “just werks” just as if I were on Xorg instead. Even on a completely obscure/zero linux support single board computer (Orange pi zero 3).

GustavoM,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Why not? It’s simple, lightweight, has a lot of interesting commands that fills its respective niche really well (btop, for instance) and (the best of all) it doesn’t explode my PC everytime I run such commands.

"Combokeys" instead of hotkeys. [Feature/new command suggestion]

Title. Basically, “if a street fighter gamer and a linux tryhard had a baby” where a combination of keys is issued to run a command/script rather than a single or a simultaneous stroke of two or more. i.e left, down, left, right arrow keys, R_CTRL to run Firefox. Right, right, Up, right arrow keys, delete to power off the...

When folks will stop with the “If Linux won’t become another Windows, it’ll fail” mentality? Linux is not Winblows – and we really mean it. To “increase adoption” users need to acknowledge (only) this – that both Windows and Linux differs from one another and that won’t change in any time soon.

I feel like breaking my windows install was a rite of passage

Lately ive noticed that i was wanting to do certain things on Windows that just seemed much easier and more intuitive on Linux, based in the OS specific solutions i would see to problems i encountered. And i was more frequently using software where Windows support seemed like an after thought....

GustavoM,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

My “rite of passage” to the magical world of GNU/Linux was… well… boredom. My Windows install was run fresh, with TCPOptimizer, with some things removed out of its core… until I took the decision of “trying to figure out how to use Linux even if it means losing my sanity.”

…and here we are. Sanity is still intact tho…

…I think. :^)

Asides from “ew installing Winblows stuff in my distro ewwww” that will be a gamechanger if they do it right.

Yes officer, this heretic right here.

“Not exactly Linux”, but FreeBSD. Gave it a couple tries but gave up when I realized its minimalism is a placebo at best and its “super security features” can (also) be achieved on any other standard Linux distribution.

No, but I used this back when I was a little penguin and I had to “see” something working on Linux.

NixOS on OnePlus 6 with Extra Steps, or the Diary of my Descent into Madness (pavluk.org)

My biggest blog post yet, and it’s about running (almost) vanilla NixOS on a (formerly) Android phone! This was 50% fun and 50% exhausting… you solve one issue and another one crops up right away… it was certainly an interesting educational experience....

GustavoM,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Why do you hate yourself this much?

j/k. nicely done. I’d feel like a hacker if I could do this on my phone, but I’m too scared to brick it.

How many of you run a Linux phone (Pine64, Librem etc) as your daily driver?

I was going through Pine64’s page again after I found the latest KDE announcement. With that said, I seem to see a lot of issues with firmware on the Pine, whilst the Librem is just plain out of budget for me. Was interested in how many people here run a Linux mobile as a daily driver, and how has your experience been?...

GustavoM,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Does a single board computer counts as a phone? Then a Orange pi zero 3. (Not like theres anything else to do other than read/lurk online communities, code and the occasional cloud gaming nowadays, so eh.)

GustavoM,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Then do it? It’s a free operating system – just download whatever distro pleases you, give it a spin, see what happens.

GustavoM,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

It’s fun and games… until you get lots of “…just like X command?” commentaries from randoms. Until you get sick of such and decide to do something non-productive instead. Unless there is money included in the former.

t. Been there, done that.

If that means an AI-assistant of sorts (like “that OS name that cannot be spoketh”) I’m game.

Will that make some users freak out and make it sound like its doomsday, even if they implement a on/off toggle to the AI assistant? Probably.

“But can Linux install things via a single .exe file? HAHAH EAT IT NERD!”
