Linux file transfer speed bottlenecks?

I’m currently watching the progress of a 4tB rsync file transfer, and i’m curious why the speeds are less than the theoretical read/write maximum speeds of the drives involved with the transfer. I know there’s a lot that can effect transfer speeds, so I guess i’m not asking why my transfer itself isn’t going faster....

Looks like you have your answer, but there are a crazy number of possible issues.

The biggest cause is misreading the performance specs.

A partial list of other options:
Mechanical drives store data in rings. Outer rings have higher speeds than inner due to constant angular velocity.
Seeks cost a lot of throuput on mechanical drives.
Oversubscribed drive cables.
HBA issues.
PCIe data path conflicts
Slow RAM
RAM full or busy
Extra cpy within RAM
NUMA path issues (of drives are connected to different NUMA nodes. Not an issue on desktops.)
CPU too busy
Transfer software doing extra things
File system doing extra.
RAID doing extra.
NIC on a different NUMA node than HBA (can be good or bad).
NIC sharing the data path in a conflicting way.

There are others. Start with checking theoretical performance from data sheets.

Also, details matter, and I don’t have enough of them to guess.

MNByChoice,

Saturnella. It was on the winter solstice, but the Romans later moved the calendar and didn’t change the date.

MNByChoice,

Not really the focus here, but Google could really improve those listings by providing some guidance as to what permissions are actually required for certain tasks.

I am not certain I would know if am SMS program needs full Internet access or not.

(I get in this instance everything added is bad.)

MNByChoice,

really weird to simply stand there and read

Agreed. I am going for a way around that strangeness to increase my active standing time.

Walking is great!

MNByChoice,

why kill anyone? Why not go back to their childhood and teach them to be better humans?

I think this is wonderful logic for a great many situations with a vastly overpowered being. With enough power and patience, all problems can be solved peacefully.

Protecting HDDs from (external) train vibrations

I am worried that externally caused vibrations might damage my HDDs (NAS in the planning). The subway / metro runs under my building, and every time the train passes, this causes slight but measurable vibrations in the 50-100 Hz frequency range. It is more like a rumbling noise than the usual vibration of a passing train....

MNByChoice,

Treating Future Me the way Present Me wishes Past Me would have treated Present Me, has really helped Present Me be kinder to others.

I have never read them except out of Boredom

Fun Fact: this has always been true. That and avoiding the children. In the days of outhouses, sitting on the toilet for hours was not great. So they read newspapers.

Edit: I was more being funny about wasting time in the bathroom too avoid child responsibility. People have often needed long times to make things work. The person that responded to me had some great points.

Alright, I'm gonna "take one for the team" -- what is with the "downvote-happy" users lately?

Title. “lmao internet points” and all, but what is the point of participating in a community that sees assumptions and other commonly non-harmful commentaries/posts as “bad” this easily? Do folks in here are really that needy of self-validation, even if it means seeking such from something completely insignificant like...

MNByChoice,

True.

A case can be made for a large number of buttons. I wonder if the extra complications of multiple buttons would have a good payoff.

MNByChoice,

Can this be gamed for massive overtime?

Also, that sucks and seems borderline illegal. Obviously, that depends on your local laws and socioeconomic status.

MNByChoice,

Great point. IBM has a long history of squeezing every penny from their customers. At one corner job, IBM had to come onsite a few times a year to perform system updates. We were not allowed by IBM to upgrade the OS ourselves.

MNByChoice,

Sadly, message does not list a dollar amount. Replies are great though. Lots of pointing out the listed items are small compared to corporation size.

MNByChoice,

And for those wondering about the manga, here is the Wikipedia entry.

MNByChoice,

I am not OP, but this is a great time to remind people that debris from a mower can be very dangerous. Wear steel toe boots and long jeans. Don’t let children play near a mower.

OTOH, marketing materials rarely show PPE.

MNByChoice,

I have heard that part of the point is so that parents cannot understand the conversation. It is not a side effect, it is the point.

MNByChoice,

That is a great i idea.

MNByChoice,

X, the former Twitter, or another company called X?

MNByChoice,

Can we just start putting the references in with spoiler tags? Or just in?

The fuck is going on?

MNByChoice,

Thank you!

MNByChoice,

I have been meaning to do this. I have found that local politicians are exceptionally cheap. Buy a few, and hope that one makes it big.

MNByChoice,

Fantastic link! I had started reading on Reddit, and I am happy to see this elsewhere.

MNByChoice,

The load capacity:

400 short tons (363 t)

I think one may be able to bring home a Costco.
