NeoNachtwaechter,

When I need both Linux and Windows, I like to have at least one of them locked up in a VM so that they can never even sniff each other :-)

NeoNachtwaechter,

Whatever is needed.

My preference is Linux as the base system, then several VM’s with both Linuxes and Windoses inside. Proxmox on the base system makes it easy.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Is your engine >30 years old?

NeoNachtwaechter, (edited )

15 sec is plenty. After 15 sec all of your engine’s oil has traveled through the pump and through the whole system 1 - 1.5 times.

NeoNachtwaechter,

just fly solo as a good human

The older you get, the more serious you want to take it. Being true to yourself etc.

But the more serious you take it, the harder it gets. In the end, I’m afraid it’s not doable.

Broke a partition. Is there any way of saving it?

While I was switching distros, I accidentally broke a partition. I’m almost certain that all the data is there, but it doesn’t have a filesystem (I used ext4). Is there anything I can do to fix it, similar to changing the file extension without changing the contents. PS: It’s a data partition. I was trying to resize it,...

NeoNachtwaechter,

there - create a new partition at the exact same location, of the exact same size.

… exact same starting block, size and geometry.

NeoNachtwaechter,

How do you define ‘civilization’? Do you count ants?

NeoNachtwaechter,

Somehow I like the idea. I just can’t figure out, why…

;-)

NeoNachtwaechter, (edited )

Wow. I didn’t know that polar bear tastes that good! :-)

What are your criteria for upvoting/downvoting?

I hate that I always compare Lemmy to Reddit, but Reddit used to have (not sure if they still do) guidelines called “Reddiquette” that included guidelines about upvoting and downvoting. I don’t remember the specifics (and sending too much of my browser traffic to Reddit makes me feel dirty) but one of the guidelines was...

NeoNachtwaechter,

Because it happens spontaneously.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Of course I make a choice each time when I vote. I’m not a robot after all… :-)

NeoNachtwaechter,

“Reddiquette” that included guidelines about upvoting and downvoting.

First time that I even hear about that LOL.

I do not follow any ‘guidelines’ when up/downvoting. It comes spontaneously.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Have you ever heard about cultural differences?

NeoNachtwaechter,

charter or policy documents

Get real. They aren’t american lawyers.

Question about Android. Is there a way to replace the system file manager on non-rooted devices?

When you need to upload a photo to a photo hosting site through a browser, the system file manager opens. When choosing a photo for editing, this also happens through the file manager built into Android. Is there a way to force applications to open my preferred file manager instead of the system one?

NeoNachtwaechter,

I do not think Android has a system default file manager. This is rather an app from the device manufacturer.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Scenario 1 is where you would be outed as a witch.

Unlikely, since I am a man :-)

NeoNachtwaechter,

Ok 80% of me can survive then :-)

NeoNachtwaechter, (edited )

Imagine the whole thing like a graphics card that is in a different PC. Your app wants to draw it’s content on the remote screen. Only it’s own content inside it’s own window. This is not screen sharing. Your app cannot touch any other apps.

X11 is the connection between your app and the remote graphics card. It may be the local card as well, it is the same.

Technically, a wm is not needed. The app and X11 would work anyway.

Shouldn’t window managers abstract all that for the software

The wm does not interrupt or change any communication between the app and the screen. It amends it with decoration and control buttons etc. for example it draws the window borders around the app’s own window area.

NeoNachtwaechter,

640 kCores should be enough for everybody

Right you are.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Good question. Generally No.

Your duty to come to work is part of your work contract. But not the question where you come from, or where you go after work. That’s your decision and your private time.

If it is different, for example if they order you where to live, then that must be compensated.

NeoNachtwaechter,

As soon as you are doing the things that your company has ordered, you are working.

This includes enduring the security check.

NeoNachtwaechter,

No. Not at all.

My native language is using gender nearly everywhere. English is relatively neutral, and it appears as poor in comparison. More neutralisation would make English even more cold and dead.

NeoNachtwaechter,

filled areas and outlined, simple and chaotic… :-)

What would cause a hard drive's, in an enclosure, filesystem to not mount in PopOs?

Still new to linux hope its ok to ask here. I decided to replace one of my backup drives for the first time in 5ish years with a new 2.5" HDD meant for internal use but in an enclosure (the enclosure works fine). I formatted it in ntfs via gparted and everything went as expected, I even created a large veracrypt container file....

NeoNachtwaechter,

You need somebody who knows your Popos.

In general, linuxes autodetect all hardware, but do not automount all filesystems. This is intended. It is a matter of configuration, and so the different distros have different tastes regarding this topic.
