Dude the name alone sounds awesome

edit: I want to post this map but its complaining that the content type isn’t html. I don’t really see the purpose of linking a webpage when linking directly to the image will allow it to properly embed? Not sure if that’s an instance limitation or a community limitation but it seems like not the right choice for meme communities

Trainguyrom,

Looks like its here: !cartographyanarchy

Took some poking before it fully showed up for me so I’m guessing I’m the first person on my instance to try to view that community.

Trainguyrom,

Shout-out to the /r/Sysadmin mods who decided subreddit uptime was too important to partake in the blackout. Man that place just had a really toxic tone and really made me strongly want to avoid the Sysadmin career track

Trainguyrom,

realise I want to go back to uni and study info tech

I highly recommend it! College as an adult who’s been in the workforce is way better than college as a kid fresh out of highschool. Great opportunity to make some more friends, do some cool college activities, plus there’s lots of good opportunities for student pricing on stuff if you have a .edu email and its a brilliant change of pace.

Trainguyrom,

Don’t worry I was already told I’m the meanest daddy in the world for telling my kid no to eating birthday cake for breakfast

Trainguyrom,

I’m trying to remember but some Microsoft Office product did something entirely unexpected when I hit Ctrl+P to print. I wish I could remember the details but it was absolutely soul crushing seeing even basic keyboard shortcuts remapped

Trainguyrom,

So I’m going to go against the grain here and say to get some college under your belt. A 2 year degree and a cert or two (which can even be part of your degree program, or sometimes will allow you to skip some classes saving you time and money) will easily get you into a helpdesk job, and from there you can go into whatever specialization ends up tickling your fancy.

I’ll also say, helping someone with their nth password reset doesn’t have to suck. Sometimes there’s a root cause that you can help with which makes you far more helpful than the tech who just helps them reset it 10 more times. One of my proudest achievements in a previous role was successfully teaching all of our users who’d email us a scan of a printout of a screenshot of an error message how to send us the screenshot directly, and we went from 1 ticket like that per week to none for my final 6 months. All it takes is some compassion and meeting the users where they are without judgment for the common goal of getting both of our jobs done a little easier.

Trainguyrom,

I learned 3 things very quickly in one evening:

  1. My cheap electric razor throws a ton of noise onto whatever electrical circuit it’s plugged into
  2. How to sort out ZFS filesystem errors
  3. That the bathroom socket I plug my razor into and the plug across the house that the main desktop is plugged into happen to be on the same electrical circuit

So that’s fun!

Trainguyrom,

I’m completely disconnected from what new movies and TV shows come out after years of blocking all ads. I can see wanting to change but ads have only gotten more annoying so I have no desire to change yet

Trainguyrom,

Christmas with my family we had a hard discussion about what kind of end of life care my grandparents need and how to get that setup. Then during Christmas with my wife’s family my brother in law who’s 40 and now responsible for 3 kids between himself and his ex-wife/girlfriend drank until he passed out on the floor of the garage. His oldest child was clearly disturbed by seeing him that way, but most of my wife’s family defended it because “when you’re surrounded by family is the best time to drink like that because you know you’re safe!”

On the upside, my family was surprisingly well-behaved for once, and never chewed out my kids for being too noisy even when they were visibly struggling as they played with the new musical toys

Trainguyrom,

The fun part is that not only do you skip the line with Genie Plus but also the folks letting people into the ride will legit let an entire stream of Genie Plus payers in before letting someone who waited in line go. With the old fast pass system they were really good about alternating lines if there was a line for both fast pass and genie plus

Trainguyrom,

Java is famously cross-platform. It even means you can run a Minecraft server on Arm64 without issue. I currently have a heavily modded Minecraft server hosted on an Ampere Alta VPS without a single hitch

Trainguyrom,

The money I work for has value because its almost entirely held in banks insured by the United States Federal Reserve and those dollars are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. If that money becomes valueless overnight the whole world is in for a very rough time, and I definitely won’t be alone in my plight. You can’t say any of that about cryptocurrencies

Trainguyrom,

If all of the defaults occurred >7 years ago and there’s been no credit activity since the individual would have no credit score because of no credit history. I know this because I’ve literally seen it happen. What you do then is apply for a secured credit card (basically you pony up some cash to secure an extremely low credit limit) then after you’ve established a payment history and a credit score you can move on from there. As far as I know financial institutions do not take into account one’s felon status when determining elgibility

Trainguyrom,

Debt is super weird. In some cases you can have thousands very much just disappear after 7 years, in others they’ll hunt you down mercilessly over a $25 copay they mailed you a “this is not a bill” letter about 2 years ago. My wife was pretty deep in debt when we first started dating and I literally have seen both extremes and everything inbetween.

Trainguyrom,

I live in an area with a Sams club a inconvenient distance away and no Costco, Sam’s has been getting less and less worth bothering with, as the prices are getting less competitive, and the product quality degrading as Walmart’s distribution takes its toll (don’t even get me started on the shit quality of Walmart these days) plus dealing with large quantities of product when you have a small home can be very annoying. At this point I only buy soaps, toilet paper and baby wipes at Sams Club and that barely comes out ahead of the membership cost, and I’ve already had to stop buying one of the soaps because they switched to only selling a container that would simply be too inconvenient at home.

Aldi seems to have the real food savings, although my last trip I noticed the prices had crept up a little, they still beat Walmart and the local supermarket chain on prices by far

Trainguyrom,

To add onto this, Goodwill is the worst thrift store, so try to poke around and find some mom and pop thrift stores. They do more good with donations and charge far less when you’re buying (plus will usually help you out if you are really in a bind and need something)

Trainguyrom,

My wife was working at an assisted living facility when those conspiracies were at their peak. She had a coworker who believed in it and tried very hard to convince the residents of the conspiracy too

Trainguyrom,

When I’ve been watching the Republican debates and similar Fox News content I saw they have heavy advertising from some investment company that sells it as gold-backed securities or something along those lines. They know their audience and they’re collecting on that fact

Trainguyrom,

If you are told to travel from one office to another though you should be paid for your time

This is actually law in the 'states. If you need to travel further than your normal commute you are paid for your travel time from your normal location to the new one and if you drive your milage is paid at a rate of 67¢/mile off the top of my head. I worked IT at a rural bank for a while and had to expense my milage pretty often as I went to branches 30-50 miles away to swap computers and whatnot

Trainguyrom,

Reminds me of the old joke “what’s the difference between libertarians and republicans? Libertarians know the legal age of consent in all 50 states”

Trainguyrom,

There’s legal protections against retaliating against unions. How much teeth those protections have will vary wildly, but there are protections that do exist

Trainguyrom,

Is that 10 million active users of uBlock Origin or 10 million active installs? Also relevant because I’ve seen workplaces that deploy UBO to all users thanks to advertising being an easy vector of getting users to click random links they shouldn’t

Trainguyrom,

Realistically speaking this is fraud that’s extremely difficult to detect. They would have to be able to prove that the income was falsified, and income can change quite a bit over time as people get promoted, demoted, change jobs, gain/lose bonuses and incentives etc. Its like lying on your resume, it can be what gets your career kickstarted, but its also risky
