I’ve been running HA for a while, and it’s been working well; I haven’t had to change much in a few months. That being said, it’s fun to tinker with it, and I’m curious to hear what kind of automations the rest of the community is using. What automations are you most proud of? What are your favorite? What kind of...
The reason for the stupid lockout. Pretty ingenious, but yeah they all lie. The worst offenders are heat pump dryers. I think they’re gaslighting their customers.
So building new home. Its a small aframe up on the side of a mtn. Don’t need anything fancy like multi zone. Only need on/off with dimming. Buying switches for the main lights and am thinking its one of the following two....
We heat our house with oil (grumble grumble grumble) but our float sensor is not a very accurate measure and it’s out of the way to actually see. Has anyone come across a sensor that works with HA and has been reliable? Bonus points for something that still has an “analog” view in case of problem...
Tinkering is all fun and games, until it’s 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you’re about to execute… And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...
I have to preface by saying that this isn’t really related to Home Assistant. I can’t find a more generic home automation community on Lemmy and I figured someone here might have some experience with this so I hope is post is allowed....
You need an actuator that takes a proportional input signal. 0-10vdc is common. You’ll just need a 24vac to 10vdc power supply for the manual potentiometer.
Nice. I don’t know about the torque requirements or mounting dimensions of your existing (or new?) damper so double check those. Kinda sucks that they don’t make one that takes the pot signal directly. I know a lot of lighting dimmers are 0-10v but how they are powered and interact with that damper is uncharted territory.
I’ve been aware of pi-hole for a while now, but never bothered with it because I do most web browsing on a laptop where browser extensions like uBlock origin are good enough. However, with multiple streaming services starting to insert adds into my paid subscriptions, I’m looking to upgrade to a network blocker that will...
I run pihole on proxomox, and also opnsense in the same box. Then you can forward all port 53 traffic to your pihole. Some devices have hard-coded DNS that will bypass the DHCP DNS.
I had a 3700x that was doing that sort of thing. It seemed mostly random, but moving big files would crash it pretty often. It ran memtest86 for 3 days no problem. I replaced part by part, and it ended up being the CPU. I’d bought it second hand so it may have been abused.
It might be dead when I get home this afternoon, but I’ve been lucky with my Samsung fridge. I got it as a deeply discounted discounted floor model 9 years ago.
Hosted a party and someone had leaned up against the ice/water buttons and put it into store/demo mode so everything looked fine but the compressor was disabled. The button combo should have been impossible to trigger accidentally but they did. I had defrost problems after that until I took the back panel out and cleaned the drains. That was 6 years ago and it’s been good.
I think all French door models are designed to die. Run far, far away from those.
The controller also handles roaming, as I understand it. I have a software controller on a VM. They provide a .deb! I have 3 EAP670s and an EAP-655-Wall. Roaming works perfectly on phones and laptops. I have a hidden SSID on each individual AP that I use to lock dumber stuff. Some devices fight the AP Lock on Omada.
I see the value in going 100% omada, but I couldn’t justify the cost of the switches I’d need. Their routers look good for the price too, but my use case is a notch or two above their target market.
Not much you can select for with desktop parts. Maybe get dual Ethernet now so you don’t want to add a card later. And more disks, more power so one bigger drive is better than two smaller…
Might be better to suspend it, and wake on lan when you want to play.
And fuck. I really miss plex. I’ve had Netflix and Hulu forever as family won’t let me cancel. Decided to sign up to Paramount + for some Trek. Twice in lower decks it didn’t save my watched episodes. Doesn’t mark episode as watched if you exit during the credits. And multiple playback issues....
