otp,

On average the world is better than it’s ever been

Of course, certain groups of people have been trying to reverse these trends in the name of…money? Tradition?

The newer generations are no longer becoming smarter (I believe it was the Flynn effect). Education is being defunded at all levels.

The cost of living in many parts of the world has been outpacing wages… especially now, but for decades. Yet we have more wealth hoarded into fewer hands.

Anti-vax and anti-science movements have been reintroducing measles and have been making it hard to fight other diseases.

We are seeing the effects of these things in action, and they will only get worse over time.

What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

Bananas are ridiculously cheap even up here in Canada, and they aren’t grown anywhere near here. Yet a banana can grow, be harvested, be shipped, be stocked, and then be purchased by me for less than it’d cost to mail a letter across town. (Well, if I could buy a single banana maybe…or maybe that’s not the best...

otp,

We can’t grow rice in Canada, so that definitely applies to us! Still cheap here, though.

otp,

Without a doubt. And when it’s things that can only grow in those parts of the world, it can be harder to find alternatives.

Not that I can afford them, lol

otp,

And I’m thankful for it!

It kind of makes sense though. Pasta is cheap too. Most ramen packs are less noodles than you’d get in a bag of pasta, but with a bit of packaged salt/seasoning mix. It can also be manufactured anywhere with stuff that grows locally (at least where I am).

otp,

Bananas are still cheap, though!

otp,

It’s not much different in Canada. I strongly dislike all the HFCS-sweetened stuff.

otp,

And even then, with chocolate, costs are rising. You can tell by how prevalent things like “chocolatey chips” are.

We’ve gotten too used to having cheap coffee and chocolate, and I’m disappointed with the substitutes…too bad I can’t afford the ethical stuff quite yet, lol

otp,

Unless you sign up for the drug trials!

otp,

That’s all on you. The a is spaced far enough away, lol

otp,

Will do, thanks. Did lots of thorough checks when I got it, so I didn’t expect there to be any issues now.

I'm looking for a privacy respecting vacuum robot

I’m looking for a vacuum robot preferably under 500€ and with a cleaning station. My main concern is that most robot vacuum providers seem to need to be connected to the internet. Are there any providers that either don’t need that, where I can block the internet connection or any other way not getting a spy in my home?...

otp,

OTOH, “I’d like a TB that doesn’t show me its own ads” would’ve been perfectly predictable.

People were predicting it as soon as devices other than computers started connecting to the internet. Maybe even before that.

otp,

Lifetime sales? And as a notable book, probably one that was gifted often or bought to “decorate” shelves.

Maybe people used to read the book, but it feels like the people saying “Literally 1984” haven’t read the book, they just know that it’s how the world would be if [insert political party here] had their way in the government for too many years, which is a bad thing.

(And yes, of course the world being like 1984 would be bad, but I think that’s the limit of a lot of people’s understanding of the book, lol)

otp,

Your username is a fairly common noun and an incredibly common, er, auxiliary verb?

They can’t do anything with it by sticking it into Google!

otp,

I’m still waiting for your Rudolph moment here.

Tell us how you’ll guide the sleigh tonight!

otp,

Not sure, but another example is “irregardless”

otp,

I think you need to mark your comment NSFW!

otp,

I think “Where are you” was perfectly acceptable when we had landlines. It was before phones that that was almost never asked.

otp,

Your literal 7-year old probably isn’t a Zoomer

otp,

Where did you live that has people who blamed East Asian people for 9/11?

The ignorant people here were blaming Indians and other South Asians, and that was the limit of ridiculousness where I grew up

otp,

Thanks. I often open my windows when I can, but I’ve been getting really dry skin since I’ve started opening them. Which made me think I need a humidifier…

My home’s air seems to fluctuate between way too dry and way too humid, and I don’t know how or why or what to do to fix it, lol

otp,

Is it more like you decide what to do, and you ask loved ones to take the day off?

Or you ask them to plan something to do together?

(Not meaning to pry or anything, I’m just curious how the motivation works)

And if you’d like to share, what was your most memorable birthday present/experience?

otp,

I think that some people, regardless of wealth/income don’t really want “items” to unwrap. That makes sense.

I was imagining that, for Bill Gates (etc.), they could literally just hop on a private jet and fly anywhere in the world to eat at any restaurant they want prepared by a world-class chef. So even certain experiences would be hard to match at home.

Is it usually a home-cooked dinner or a restaurant for you?

otp,

They’re also on Lemmy. I haven’t been here long, but I’ve already seen 2.

One is right here in another comment chain, lol
