psud,

You know all this is worst in America, and I think it’s the systems.

The rest of the British colonies used highly conservative parliaments, where parliament is diverse and consensus is needed

America’s system was different, giving veto rather than encouraging consensus, focusing all power into two parties, removing the diversity

My country gets green policy by the green party gaining enough seats in parliament to makes it worth the bigger parties negotiating with them, that can’t happen in a two party system

You can’t have a bold party on the left because you have no room for a new, different party (that’s why the conservative side changed rather that a brand new party forming)

We are protected by the more stupid ideas the greens have, as the greens must negotiate to get any of their ideas up

I’m a counter example. I contributed on Reddit, moderated my own subreddit with a couple of thousand viewers; couple of tens of contributors

I haven’t been back to that sub, haven’t appointed any other mods. If automod can’t handle shit, shit isn’t being handled

I have been back to other subs. There are small inoffensive places on Reddit that simply haven’t moved

I still visit those subs, still write on them, just not nearly as often

Edit to add: checking today, those subs are becoming less good. With no good app, so many of the prolific commenters don’t comment much now. I also had a reply to a 2015 comment I made. I thought stuff was auto-archived much quicker than that

psud,

Some companies just make their new version compelling. You can’t get the experience of Balders Gate 3 by playing Balders Gate 1.

I think they’re all competing with themselves anyway, the biggest customer group for Whatever 5 will be players of Whatever 4. Giving away Whatever 1, 2, and 3 will increase sales of 4 and 5

COBOL isn’t too terrible, it has its gotchas (like sizing variables for inputs (in which you don’t need space for the datas headers and will break stuff if you do)) but mostly it’s an old language designed to be easy to use

New staff in my workplace first using COBOL (with other build experience) learn it to the point they’re productive in a week or two

psud, (edited )

My work used to use (until a project I worked on* to bypass it) a document formatter that lived in a set of chips on an ISA card

ISA slots went rare with Pentium 1/586; were extinct not much later

We had a beige box and a backup beige box. When parts failed the replacements were incredibly expensive (enough it was worth 12*60 pdays of fixing)

(* On resumes, I was totally critical to that project; in reality it was build led, and I was in design)

psud,

It’s still supported because there’s billions of dollars moved by COBOL code and IBM and others want a share of the profit of those who move billions

psud,

Publishers and film makers too. Keep it in print or lose rights (though I’d rather have much shorter copyright periods). Changed products get their own copyright, but the old version falls out if you stop selling it.

psud,

A monopoly is thought to inspire creation, if that’s so IP is good, but should be on human timescales.

100 years of monopoly won’t inspire me any better than 20 years, and even most cooperate products have less time in production than that

psud,

Big K is Kelvins (temperature), so the multiplier had to be little k

psud,

It was so during the age of floppy discs. Our computers use TiB, marketers use TB to sell storage

psud,

They are almost always better in their dock, specifically boats optimised as condos are terrible at sea since open ocean is not in their design brief

Perhaps they might be better up river as far as they can go

psud,

In Australia you can send money bank to bank for free, with practically instant transfers (though large amounts and first transfers from you to someone get a 24hr hold)

And you can use the person’s phone number as the transaction target (instead of bank branch number and account number)

It’s pretty nice, good for small business too, especially trades

psud,

The Australian government used faxes well into the 2000s, I think the last three faxes I sent though were through my modem

psud,

Stupid/inconstant adults stick in your mind. I’m lucky to have mostly had good teachers, just one teaching vowels one week taught us a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y

Then the next week tested our learning, and marked my answer “a, e, i, o, u, sometimes y” wrong because it’s only aeiou. Sure teacher. No vowels at all in by, but the same sound at the beginning of bicycle has one.

I think they must have been reading from a book when teaching, but working from their own ideas for the test

psud,

There’s always GNU/HURD, if you want a little compatibility

psud,

If you want an OS that is really malware-free, you need to run temple os.

*anything unpopular

psud,

For example, when GNU/Linux was unpopular, there was no malware for it; when it became the world’s favourite server software or became a valuable target

psud,

Hits Balmer point, accidentally makes malware. A modern Jekyll and Hyde

My client doesn’t show their redaction unless I visit their user page. I see them as MaxVoltage@lemmy.world

psud,

Tobacco on its own will cause cancer. Note how pipe and cigar smokers get mouth cancers despite taking only pure tobacco

psud,

Framework laptops come with current Linux installed, and they’re user maintainable

No touch screen though.

psud,

You said that as a lemmy.ml user in reply to a user from another instance, and I’m replying to you from yet a third. It doesn’t seem to be restricting any of us to our own instance

Is the “problem” you’re talking about that any instance may have it’s own community by the same name as another instance’s? That’s not a bug.

That lets anyone say “I don’t like that community for this thing I like, I shall set up my own on this other instance”

psud,

“Antarctica is really an impassable ice wall that holds the water in”

And/or

“The Earth is like a snow dome”

psud,

Some of the odd studies were simply cheap, and are, in fact useless

psud,
