psud,

We evolved in a world with little sugar, few starchy plants. 15,000 years ago everyone (except those where sugar cane grew) had excellent teeth

In the fossil record bad teeth come at the same time as bread, though it took sugar (especially in fizzy drinks) to make everyone fat and diabetic

I eat carnivore and haven’t brushed my teeth in five years and have not had any tooth aches

psud,

People have been hospitalised for too much spinach

psud,

Maybe. But it used to be more true, back when IPA meant strong and bitter, and other terms were used for the high flavour beers

You can’t afford food?

psud,

Groups I have noticed in the past few months, who have released something in this past year

  • Post Malone
  • Doja car
  • Billie Eilish
  • Rum Jungle
psud,

That’s such a role reversal. It used to be that gnome couldn’t do half the things KDE could, and was too configurable to be easy

psud, (edited )

Some places have crappy internet, so they need it

You and I can download a 1300MB game, it’s not necessarily so in Brunei

psud,

Yiffit might be

psud,

It will be the non-free drivers package. If installing Debian, also grab the non-free drivers, you’ll need it for wifi

psud,

Is there a good reason to dislike snaps? I think they are inefficient, but that hardly matters today. It’s there a better reason?

psud,

Because once one works out that it’s as easy to I use and does everything they need, it’s a lot more expandable and configurable and a lot less advertising intensive than actual windows

I found them in local bushland (Australia) in the late 80s

I presume they were hidden by older boys who didn’t dare take them home where a parent may find them

I also didn’t dare keep them at home long, that book of bush went back into the bush

psud,

I’m pretty sure I have seen paid content here, though some real people are too excited over unexciting products

psud,

Even Reddit has small communities. There will always be groups where you recognise many of the names

I miss /r/enfp though (over of those tiny subs). So many regulars are gone, it really went down hill with the death of apps and I don’t visit it anymore

psud,

You don’t get many thieves in reasonably wealthy countries with reasonably level stratification

psud,

It’s bad enough at programming that you can often see the problems without the help of the compiler

Last thing I asked it for, after the fourth draft still had undeclared variables and called imaginary libraries (which if they existed would be great)

It was good for coming up with a nice structure for a small program

psud,

It’s still supported because there’s billions of dollars moved by COBOL code and IBM and others want a share of the profit of those who move billions

psud,

Some companies just make their new version compelling. You can’t get the experience of Balders Gate 3 by playing Balders Gate 1.

I think they’re all competing with themselves anyway, the biggest customer group for Whatever 5 will be players of Whatever 4. Giving away Whatever 1, 2, and 3 will increase sales of 4 and 5

psud, (edited )

COBOL isn’t too terrible, it has its gotchas (like sizing variables for inputs (in which you don’t need space for the datas headers and will break stuff if you do)) but mostly it’s an old language designed to be easy to use

New staff in my workplace first using COBOL (with other build experience) learn it to the point they’re productive in a week or two

psud, (edited )

My work used to use (until a project I worked on* to bypass it) a document formatter that lived in a set of chips on an ISA card

ISA slots went rare with Pentium 1/586; were extinct not much later

We had a beige box and a backup beige box. When parts failed the replacements were incredibly expensive (enough it was worth 12*60 pdays of fixing)

(* On resumes, I was totally critical to that project; in reality it was build led, and I was in design)

psud,

You know all this is worst in America, and I think it’s the systems.

The rest of the British colonies used highly conservative parliaments, where parliament is diverse and consensus is needed

America’s system was different, giving veto rather than encouraging consensus, focusing all power into two parties, removing the diversity

My country gets green policy by the green party gaining enough seats in parliament to makes it worth the bigger parties negotiating with them, that can’t happen in a two party system

You can’t have a bold party on the left because you have no room for a new, different party (that’s why the conservative side changed rather that a brand new party forming)

We are protected by the more stupid ideas the greens have, as the greens must negotiate to get any of their ideas up

psud,

I used .5mm, never had a problem with the lead breaking

psud,

The hottest a specific person believed in. Obviously never visited $countryThatGetsHotter

psud,

“you’re” is an abbreviation for “you are”

You wanted “your point…”
