sbv,

That pizza looks delicious. Lots of cheese. Toppings. 🤤

sbv,

I didn’t see Star Wars until I was in my twenties. It isn’t a great set of movies. A lot of people really like it. And now power to them! But it’s not a great conversational gambit.

sbv,

Stuff that’s entirely subjective, like their enjoyment of TV shows, movies, how they feel about religion, etc.

I get that these things mean a lot to the speaker, but its just a statement I can either agree with or disagree with. I can’t really have a conversation, since it’s personal preference.

sbv,

Imagine meeting the love of your life and then finding out they talk on the phone

sbv,

only one ethnic group is criticized for it

China had received international condemnation for the treatment of Uyghurs (recently) and other groups (historically). Rwanda’s treatment of minorities was pretty big news a while back. I don’t think you’d need to look too far for coverage on the treatment of recent immigrants in the EU.

sbv,

I don’t understand your statement. Can you explain it?

sbv,

NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU NOT YOU

sbv,

Something with a spacious keyboard would be great.

sbv,

I use ones from recipe books. I like that the recipe is in a book because

  1. The screen doesn’t turn off when I’m cooking.
  2. The recipe usually fits on a page, so I don’t need to touch it after I start.
  3. I can scribble my modifications on it with a pencil.
  4. I mark the good ones with torn up bits of paper sticking out.
  5. I like having a bunch of recipe books around. Most of them were gifts, so cooking from them reminds me of who I got them from.

I’ve tried bookmarks to websites, copying recipes to Google Docs/Keep. It feels like work. Worse, when I’m cooking, I need a way to keep my phone/tablet screen on. I’m usually listening to a podcast or using a timer on my phone, so then I need to switch apps, etc.

sbv,

I prefer to think of them as “disappointments”. That makes it easier to skip the bothering to check prices step and go straight to “no”.

sbv,

We cancelled AppleTV after watching the first couple of episodes of Severance and Foundation. For all the hype, they were poorly paced and bland.

sbv,

Are you my grandmother?

sbv,

They’re awesome. I was kind of disappointed when our old car died and I updated to a vehicle with a fob.

sbv,

Before I had a car with a remote, I really liked Keyport organizers. They’re a good way to stop keys from getting clanky and stabby in your pocket. And they have a snazzy flashlight and pocket knife. They’re a fun fidget too.

sbv,

Who cares? If baddies subvert the backend, the worst case scenario is that I get lower quality memes.

I care slightly more about clients. Those run in sandboxes on your phone or browser, so they’re probably fine-ish too.

🤷

Talking Over Women

Assuming that boys are socialized to be more confident, bold, and outspoken, the end result is that men will end up talking over women. In an open forum setting, such as a professional or educational one, when the floor is open to anyone, it seems like men are more likely to speak up first....

sbv,

When dealing with small groups, I ask participants for their perspective by name. The loudest doesn’t go first, and everyone gets equal-ish time. That doesn’t scale to a large forum though.

sbv,

This. Isn’t that neoliberalism? We outsource everything to companies in the name of efficiency?

sbv,

I thought this was one of the parenting communities for a second…
