For me, there were several dollar store trinkets that already broke, and one toy for my kids that was a huge sparkly styrofoam mess waiting to happen, so I threw it out rather than curse anyone else with it.
At the other end of the spectrum: My wife and I made a minimal gifts pact. We each got each other minor crap we needed for around the house. It was perfect. No waste. No extravagance. Just stuff we were going to get anyway.
On Reddit I just read without logging in. It was nice. I’m trying to help build communities on Lemmy, so I’m posting and commenting.
Since doing that, I’ve been told I’m enjoying my hobby wrong, that my friends enjoy their hobby wrong, the links I researched for a comment thread are wrong (without references to correct info), and that I’m probably wrong about how I want to live.
I know I should have thicker skin, but the slow drip of unfriendliness is alienating.
China had received international condemnation for the treatment of Uyghurs (recently) and other groups (historically). Rwanda’s treatment of minorities was pretty big news a while back. I don’t think you’d need to look too far for coverage on the treatment of recent immigrants in the EU.
I have noticed that I interact a lot more in Lemmy than I ever did in any social media. Let it be Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter… I am used to be the lurker, but here for some reason things are different. Wonder if more people feel like I do.
From what I see, Lemmy is just at the edge of “not enough content”. So many communities have one or two committed posters. So I comment as much as I can and post when I see something interesting.
