liontigerwings, in Reddit feels like it's gone back to 100% normalcy already. Was the protest a failure?

No. It seeded the fediverse. More will come tomorrow when the app stops working.

Reddit went from an untouchable site without any competition to something that needs to appease users or risk sending them to competition.

@lowdownfool@kbin.social avatar

Thinks seem to be picking up in the Threadiverse, so something definitely changed. It's nowhere near Reddit levels of activity but getting better. Personally, my 12 year account is now gone which is significant for me.

Crazymick,

Same for me.. cancelled my Apollo subscription and denied the auto refund so Christian could keep the cash, cancelled my Reddit Premium Sub and started donating to the Fediverse Instance I use for Kbin and Mastodon. Haven’t been on Reddit since.

I may just be one guy but I spoke with my money and my website activity/data.

CIWS-30, in I'm no climate scientist, but it looks to me like we might have skipped over oops.

They warned us even back in the 70's that it was bad, then it'd suddenly get worse all of a sudden with little to no warning as things snowballed, but of course the oil execs just tried to shut up their own scientists and block them from influencing congress instead of listening. Even though they were warned that the threat was "Existential".

MrComradeTaco,

Money talks.

MrComradeTaco, in Reddit feels like it's gone back to 100% normalcy already. Was the protest a failure?

100k active users at Lemmy don’t think the same.

And then nature begins healing. 🌹

Trebach,

But we take a lot of it down with us along the way, so it's got thousands or millions of years of work to do in order to return to how it was.

Entropywins,
@Entropywins@kbin.social avatar

It will never return to how it was... it will be something different... as far as I'm aware it never returns it just moves forward... this is/was our chance

CIWS-30,

That's what they're hoping, but what they're probably going to find is that "eat the rich" might become more than a metaphor, and that once people with the guns and muscles realize that they don't have to listen to the rich anymore...

EmptyRadar, in Reddit feels like it's gone back to 100% normalcy already. Was the protest a failure?

Does it? I hadn't noticed, I haven't been over there in quite a while.

sdothum, in Reddit feels like it's gone back to 100% normalcy already. Was the protest a failure?
@sdothum@kbin.social avatar

i would not have found this federated alternative if not for the protest.

i, for one, am glad to not have to put up with the ever increasing ads, the constant "install reddit app" popup, the crappy "new" interface (vs the "old".. which i continued to use)...

Remains to be seen how the post June 30 impact to mobile apps and the mod community shapes up. But the drive to further monetize the platform for the IPO is the writing on the wall afaiac.

Yes, the federated user base is still in its infancy.. but quality over quantity :)

explodingkitchen, in Top of r/all

LOL, that's how Reddit's traffic is "back to normal".

1bluepixel,
@1bluepixel@kbin.social avatar

Bots upvoting bots replying to bots commenting on bot reposts.

Reddit 2023.

FriendOfFalcons,

Apparently they learned a lot from r/subredditsimulator

KIM_JONG_JUICEBOX,

Holy shit I completely forgot about that. So much irony.

Now that this is the whole site, there should be a version of that sub where humans post.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

I greatly enjoyed SubredditSimulator's bizarre nonsense. When that sub closed and the new GPT2-based one replaced it I didn't find it particularly interesting because it was just regular nonsense. It was too normal.

I guess the new bots are even more normal and therefore even less interesting.

I_Miss_Daniel,
@I_Miss_Daniel@kbin.social avatar

Sounds like a song..

Bots who like posts who like posts who like bots who write posts from the bots who like bots who like posts...

explodingkitchen, (edited )

Like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grWgQChzDqQ

I like you and you like him and he likes somebody else
The three of us, so full of votes
And yet, we're all on the shelf
'Round and 'round we keep on clickin'
There's only bots left in this frickin'
Subreddit that's slowly come unglued
A circle of snoo

I wish that we could take a break
'Cause even bots get bored
But redditors keep fucking off
To the Fediverse or Discord
So on and on we keep on postin'
To hide that users have been ghostin'
Who wants spam that isn't even new?
A circle of snoo

A circle of snoo
That's filled with so much glurge
A circle of snoo
Can't someone do a purge?

But on and on we keep on postin'
To hide that users have been ghostin'
Who wants spam that isn't even new?
A circle of snoo

(edited to finish the song because if you're going to set something to an Archies tune, why not go for maximum suffering?)

Unnecessarily hostile comment. We’re getting closer to a true Reddit replacement!

Doll_Tow_Jet-ski, in Reddit feels like it's gone back to 100% normalcy already. Was the protest a failure?

I've also read that many threads in Reddit are being kept active by Large Language Model (e.g. ChatGPT)-based bots pretending to be users to give a sense of normality

Nope. The bot problem is insane over there. See here: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/499424

supermurs, in Reddit plagued with 1-star App Store reviews over API debacle as users search for 0-star button
@supermurs@kbin.social avatar

Not even lying, the app deserves nothing more than one star.

Anomander,
@Anomander@kbin.social avatar

In that vein, it's very much worthwhile to take the time to write a review explaining why the app sucks. It legitimately does, and I'd have been far less annoyed about the initial API change if the app they're trying to force folks to use wasn't so goddamned awful.

Then ... leave out the API stuff, the Reddit corporate bullshit, Apollo or RIF - Apple will scrub review-bombing from Apps' pages, and mentions of drama or competitors makes it easy to target those reviews.

explodingkitchen, in Top of r/all

A little searching with DuckDuckGo reveals that this tweet was made in January 2023. Not sure whether it's also bot-vomited from a previous instance of the same remark. It's telling that the r/all post doesn't link to the tweet or give a date.

ETA a link to the tweet in question: https://twitter.com/briantylercohen/status/1617333819660718081

Maturin,

Yeah, I'm wondering if the chorus of comments are also harvested from the various prior threads to make it look like what real conversations would be about.

explodingkitchen,

I'm thinking AI-generated based on similar past topics.

1bluepixel,
@1bluepixel@kbin.social avatar

I've definitely seen this exact tweet long before 2023.

It's bots all the way down.

SanityFM,

Are we bots?

SoPunny,
@SoPunny@lemmy.world avatar

Beep boop

Fuck, I mean no

SanityFM,

Correct! The flower would also have been acceptable.

I kid, but i do wonder whether bots will use discussions about bots to seed their bot conversations. Can a large language model have an existential crisis?

I wish I could rate it 1 star, but I'm on iOS 17 beta, and you can't rate apps on the beta.

explodingkitchen, in [REPOST] How to Delete your Reddit Account and All Data under GDPR/CCPA

Don't delete your account until you're sure you've wiped everything, including stuff that's more than 1000 comments old and stuff that's in private subs (which have to be public for you to edit/delete). TBH, I wouldn't delete your account at all at this time... just wipe it and walk away. That way, if you check back later and your comments have been restored, you can trash them again.

Doll_Tow_Jet-ski,

What do you mean by 'wiping' it?

explodingkitchen,

Removing any info you can... posts, comments, what you're subbed to, things you've saved, etc.
