Welcome! I’m also on kbin.social and have been here a few weeks, so if you’re curious or confused about anything I’m more than happy to help. It doesn’t take long to get the hang of things here, you’ll be at home in no time. :)
Don't worry, you'll catch on soon enough. Just canoodle around until something interesting hits you and then follow the "how federation works" rabbit hole until it stops making sense. Rinse and repeat. Remember that things are still in flux, so you'll probably run into bugs at some point. Using the platform gets significantly easier once you can identify what proper operation.
For example, if I let a kbin thread sit in a background tab for too long, it loses sync with the server. Once I reach the tab, and interaction that deals with storage (voting, commenting, etc.) brings me to 1 or 2 error pages. At first I thought this was a problem with which instance I joined or some federation thing I didn't understand. Nope. It's a minor bug. Just needed to refresh the page to get around it.
The fediverse is getting better and more stable every day. There's still a lot to be done, but the devs are doing a solid job. A couple weeks ago there were 300 kbin users. Now there are 235,000. Lemmy went from 50k to 1.5m. That's crazy!
That app was my most used app for the better part of 10 years. I'm legit grieving. I was so very lonely during this last decade, and Reddit had been the closest simulacrum to genuine social interaction that I got. I'm mourning, not just the passing of that app, but the trust I had in Reddit as a platform. I feel like I've lost a close friend. RIP.
Edit: I am releasing Boost for Lemmy, you can pre-register to get notified when it is available. In the meantime you can create an account and join lemmy.world/c/boostforlemmy
This is where I get confused with the federation part. If I’m signed up on kbin and masterdon do I need to sign up on lemmy as well or is it pointless having 3 signups if you are able to see all posts?
It is useful to have just 2 logins, one for kbin (or lemmy) and one for Mastodon (or Calckey).
You can see content from Mastodon on kbin but it's not the same experience since there's no timeline, hashtag follow, etc. Similarly you can see threads from kbin in Mastodon but the UI is not very nice.
For kbin and lemmy, different logins are not needed since they share the way they show information. So you can seamlessly browse lemmy content in kbin without worrying where it was originally posted.
People are only using the 3rd party app line because it's the most relatable argument. It's much more than that. A ton of moderation tools and useful bots are going dark tomorrow thanks to the API policy change. Even if we all go back to Reddit, there's no bringing back those tools. Reddit communities are going to slowly go to shit as spammers all realize that moderators aren't as effective as they used to be. This was going to happen regardless of how the protests turned out. There's no scenario where things get better for Reddit.
It'll be interesting to hear from the odd user that kept their accounts how things change in the coming weeks and months. It's cool that so many websites made articles about it but it still felt very clickbait and polarized on even those sights. Users will know the truth and hopefully update us on the shitshow to come.
I am going to be on the site for the next user just to detail how much of shitshow it becomes. My current social media mix is going to be Discord/Squabbles/Kbine + Twitter for the people I follow that are still there.
Imo, more emphasis should have been made on how spez treated Christian, the Apolla dev. It's honestly disgusting. And not even any kind of apology or direct reply. Spez just went on to smear Christian's name more with disinformation he fed to the press via interviews.
I just did about an hour ago. App updated with the new farewell message and the Sync for Lemmy sign-up, which I filled out, and then uninstalled. And then I uninstalled the official Reddit app, too. And Baconator, which I forgot I still even had.
I can't browse Reddit on my Xbox anymore! What a shame.
It looks like Relay for Reddit is going to try to stay online, eventually moving to a subscription plan. Free for now until they figure out the pricing. Nowhere near as nice as Sync, but way ahead of the official offering.
I was browsing on Apollo around 5 pm local when it crashed, never to reopen. Knew it was coming, but it was a bit heartbreaking seeing it actually happening.
Godspeed, Apollo... gone but never forgotten.
Thank you Christian for bringing so much joy to my Reddit experience all of these years. Best wishes on whatever roads life will take you next.
