NotAPenguin, in r/pics calls out spez' history as jailbait moderator, a former sub dedicated to actual CP. the post hit the front page with 15k karma in 4h, then got removed earlier today

Don't think he actually was a mod for it, you used to be able to just add people as mods without them having to accept.

Fuck spez anyways of course.

Kill_joy,
@Kill_joy@kbin.social avatar

Eh... If I logged on to my Workplace account (Facebook for corporations) and saw that I was made moderator of a Jailbait community would I:

A) Do nothing for years

Or

B) Immediately remove myself and investigate that community to see if additional action needs to be taken

🤔

AlmightySnoo, in Transcribers of Reddit, who make transcriptions for blind users, will close on the 1st July
@AlmightySnoo@lemmy.world avatar

I hope they'll consider moving to Lemmy or kbin where they'll find a more welcoming environment instead of the big fuck you's from spez and the Redditors supporting him, this shouldn't be the end.

BornVolcano,

Fun fact! I'm actually talking to them about it rn, I'm one of the transcribers and there's been discussions on what to do. From what I'm hearing, they're considering it, but they aren't entirely sure about the fediverse or how it works so setting up something the way ToR was run (which was surprisingly sophisticated, with a curated list of different posts to transcribe that would automatically update on progress across reddit) will take some time.

In the meantime I'm looking around rn for any communities here that could use a rogue transcriber to add some transcriptions to some of the posts. I want to try to help blind/VI users feel welcome here best I can. If you have any directions to point me in, please do, because idrk how the fediverse works at all, but it has markdown on mobile so I should easily be able to get some done.

I love how the majority of comments in this thread have a single downvote. I wonder who’s doing that 😂

BigJim,

Unlike Reddit, you can see who "reduces" (downvotes) comments and threads. In a comment click on more -> activity -> reduces. Yes, it is all the same person.

TZUI1hRq,

Not sure I like that feature...

NoIWontPickaName,

Accountability?

TZUI1hRq,

Anonymous voting incentivizes participation.

NoIWontPickaName,

But is it the kind of participation you want?

TZUI1hRq,

Yes, I want people's honest opinions. Not just the opinions they are comfortable share publicly.

phoenixdigita1, in I'd like to encourage people on the fediverse to comment/upvote/post more than when reddit

I'd like to point out that the upvote/downvote buttons here on kbin don't behave like you are used to on reddit they are a little different.

  • Up arrow = Upvote on Reddit and Favourite on Kbin - This is very different to reddit
  • Down Arrow = Downvote on Reddit and Reduce on Kbin
  • Boost (at bottom) = On kbin this is the equivalent to a reddit upvote.

It kinda confused me when I looked at my profile the other day and my reputation was -2

I'd only made one single post and it had 17 "upvotes" and 2 "downvotes" so the -2 confused me a bit. That's when I realised the uparrow was not an upvote and didn't contribute to reputation. I suspect many others don't understand this either based on the interractions with my other post.

Edit: To be clear while "fake internet points" are not overly important to me. "Reputation" or similar do give me an indication if I am contributing to a community in a positive and productive manner.

Seeing -2 made me think "Who have I pissed off?" Till I realised that "Favourites" don't contribute to reputation.

DarkThoughts, in How to Delete your Reddit Account and All Data under GDPR/CCPA

Posts and comments must be separately deleted before deleting your account. If not separately deleted, the content of the posts and comments will remain visible and disassociated from any account. If you want your posts and comments removed, follow the instructions on our help page.

Yeah, this is illegal. At least under GDPR. I'm not familiar with the California law.
Reddit has to delete ANY data associated with your account, and that would include the comments made.

xuxebiko, in How do you link to a reddit page without actually sending people to Reddit?

I use libreddit hosted on adminforge.de to deny reddit hits.

Eg : if you want to access /r/ModCoord, prepend https://reddit.adminforge.de to it to get https://reddit.adminforge.de/r/ModCoord and you're good to go

ch1cken,
@ch1cken@kbin.social avatar

Nice seeing others use libreddit, and adminforge's instance in particular. They also host some other frontends btw, for stuff like twitter/fandom etc.

Its also more convenient using a browser addon like libredirect which redirects url's automatically, rather than manually replacing the domain yourself.

Saw this too. Doesn’t appear to have a name yet.

webghost0101, in Reddit requires premium for changing themes and even the browser theme seems to be ignored in favour of light mode. Imagine if kbin/lemmy did that for free?

Is this real/new? Premium for whats essentially some css?

TheFork,

It's real, and it has always been the case (at least since 2016). You could pay premium to customise the whole website' CSS to your liking. You can either use a pre-made style (there was a sub to share themes) or make your own.

webghost0101,

Lol i’ve always used old.reddit and custom css trough RES. If i would have seen that i might have left even sooner. In many ways allowing custom styles IS an accessibility feature.

experbia, in Reddit Admins Deny Subreddit Users the Right to Vote for Further Blackouts
@experbia@kbin.social avatar

Wow, I should think it should be some kind of regulatory concern that Reddit is artifically inflating traffic counts as they're approaching an IPO, no? For a company whose revenue comes from advertising and user impressions, lying about user traffic is lying about profitability.

grue,

Reddit is also arguably invalidating their Section 230 protections by exercising too much editorial control over content.

Noodleneedles, in 📢Entire mod team on r/mildlyinteresting (and more subs) removed and locked out of their accounts after changing their rules upon community's request. (They're also switching subs BACK to SFW)
@Noodleneedles@beehaw.org avatar

Hilariously, a subreddit that I mod, with less than 700 subscribers and like, 4 slightly active users (3 of whom are mods), just got the threatening modmail. We only went private as a gesture of solidarity, there's maybe one post a week so it's not exactly a bustling community. I'd made the sub public for about an hour every couple of days in an effort to avoid this sort of thing, guess it didn't work.

lwgrs, in 📢Entire mod team on r/mildlyinteresting (and more subs) removed and locked out of their accounts after changing their rules upon community's request. (They're also switching subs BACK to SFW)

GO DM MODS OF YOUR FAVORITE SUBREDDITS AND POLITELY ASK ABOUT MIGRATION!

Please don't do this. I'm a moderator of a sub (won't say which one). From a personal standpoint I'm happy to use both platforms. Vilify me if you will. But I do not want to see messages from users asking if we're going to migrate. That's pestering and it won't go well if that particular subreddit isn't into it.

minnieo,
@minnieo@kbin.social avatar

How else do you suggest bringing migration to their attention? I am a mod as well, I cannot see how someone politely asking if we are thinking about making a community on a diff platform can be perceived as pestering? It appears this is individual and not every mod will be annoyed and not every mod wont be annoyed.

edit: 10 people suggesting it to mods says "this is in higher demand than we thought, not just one random person's suggestion that we can ignore, we need to consider taking action or addressing this" Which is how changes happen. mods need to listen to their users, thats the responsibility they volunteered to take on. As a commenter said below me: "If you are getting annoyed because so many of your users want to migrate, maybe you should consider migrating instead of demonizing your users?"

Nougat, in 📢Entire mod team on r/mildlyinteresting (and more subs) removed and locked out of their accounts after changing their rules upon community's request. (They're also switching subs BACK to SFW)

This morning's news about the r/mildlyinteresting team being reinstated and unsuspended by a different admin - that's confirmation that there's internal conflict going on. Protests don't work, my ass.

MorksEgg,
@MorksEgg@lemmy.world avatar

It would be nice to see some some of the admins go rogue also. I know it's a lot to ask for people to sacrifice their jobs but some people still have ethics. And some people are in a positions where they can leave their job and pick up another one within hours or days if they're in the demanding field.

LoafyLemon, in Reddit removed moderators behind the latest protests before restoring a few of them - restored by a different admin than the one that removed them...

They are experimenting with GPT4 models to moderate the subs.

The mods that didn't stand along with the protesters will soon find out how expendable they are to a corporation. The one thing corpos like spezitt hate the most is free and independent people they cannot control.

I’m not going to set a precedent of confirming with The Verge every action we do or don’t take

If you feel compelled to regard everybody as either your unpaid servant or as a hostile entity - except for taking deliberate time to pointedly kiss the Twitter imbecile's ass - maybe, just maybe it's you yourself, with a profound lack of self-awareness, that might be the very root of the problem you're flailing to deal with.

ptsdstillinmymind,

Most of these CEOs and C Suite executives are freaking sociopaths. This is the reason they don't know human emotions. They see other humans as their slaves, plain and simple. Tech bros are the worst.
