AutomaticYoghurt, in What are your favorite "ugly" games?

Not sure about ugly, but Stardew Valley’s graphics are pretty basic. Great game though.

elkaki,

I think the graphics of stardew valley are pretty beautiful, it’s really well done pixel art.

rosatherad,
@rosatherad@kbin.social avatar

In my opinion, it's okay. It's pixel art that does its job of depicting things the player can recognize. It just looks bad. The colours in particular are... not pleasant.

I disagree so I gave you a downvote

julianschmulian, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

Being a star wars fan and avid reader I felt like I should give them a try, did some research and the consensus seemed to be that the thawn trilogy was the best, read book one and hated it for how one-dimensional the characters were, nothing at all noteworthy from a literary perspective

Cleridwen, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?
@Cleridwen@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

mostly because I had to stick on Windows for video games. and for now, the amount of effort I’m already putting into making Windows functional when it’s supposed to work out of the box, makes me scared of going back to Linux. Mostly a worry about changing so many habits and diving back into the unknown

bastion,

If you do try Linux:

  • buy hardware that’s supported. For some things (storage) virtually everything works. For others, (video cards, latest-gen wifi) you need to make sure it’s supported out-of-the-box. It’s not worth the headache of trying to get it to work unless you just like geeking out.
  • if some piece if software or hardware doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. If you spend more than a half hour (or whatever your limit is) trying to get it to work, just say to yourself ‘not available on Linux right now’ and move on. Linix has way more access to beta and alpha-level stuff, and that can make it tempting to try to fix whatever problem. Just don’t bother.

That said, most of the systems I use Linux on, it just works.

Bautznersenf, in What series did you rewatch most often?

One and only I’ve fully rewatched is Veep. It’s brilliant in so many ways. I’ve revisited a lot of office episodes at random over time so I may have even rewatched the whole thing by now.

CapitalismsRefugee, in What are some of the things you say / think to yourself when going through a hard time or dealing with uncertainty to help yourself along?

These were the words I used when discussing an upcoming potential termination,

“But the person I’ll be on the other side of [this crisis of maybe termination] will be no more absolutely or permanently diminished than the one I became after any other of the subjectively substantial life-changing crises.”

I’ve lived through some pretty painful shit. I feel quite angry about the misery I consider my life to currently be, but I still choose to live. With these words I was explaining that this “disaster” couldn’t be any more miserable than the sundry other miseries I’ve learned to live with. The consequences of this “crisis” may absolutely be something I will hate deeply and bitterly, but I doubt it’s going to be the straw that gets me to break this camel’s back.

banana_meccanica, in What are some of the things you say / think to yourself when going through a hard time or dealing with uncertainty to help yourself along?

Sometimes I do positive self talk, but will not work without some basic attitude. And that is the selfishness, brutal and cruel. So during hardest and darkest time the positivy have actually a scary light and I hope to never be tested by someone in the future.

sarsaparilyptus, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

Lando Calrissian and the Mindsharp of Sharu is basically Shakespeare

Wheel of time should be long enough.

The amount of comments in here that are conjecture or just straight up bullshit is off the charts… my tech illiterate wife, and my 80+ year old grandparents use Linux without any problems.

Crabhands,
@Crabhands@lemmy.ml avatar

Different needs, different hardware, different skill levels. My kindergarten kids used it for 2 years for school, no problem. I still don’t use it because its too rough for my advanced needs.

somedaysoon, (edited )
@somedaysoon@midwest.social avatar

Linux runs circles around Windows in terms of privacy, security, control, customizaton, and DE workflows and efficiencies… so what advanced needs keep you from using it? I’m genuinely curious because Linux is far more advanced than Windows in basically every single way I can think of… I can’t think of any reason I would prefer to use Windows over Linux. The only problem Linux suffers is from software support, so if you are in an industry with software that doesn’t support it… well then, yeah, you have to use Windows. Or if you want to play a game with anticheat… and you are okay with installing what is essentially a rootkit on your computer, then yeah, Windows.

xavier666,

i understand, and as a Linux fanatic of 8 years now, let’s not be too judgemental of the ex-Linux crowd 😄

bastion,

Meh. Most of the top comments are pretty reasonable.

TheMinions, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

I read several of the Rogue Squadron books while on a long vacation and enjoyed them a lot, but they weren’t anything life changing.

dot20, in What's a big tech product that you actually find useful?

Important to say, I mean products you use even though there are alternatives, not monopolies like YouTube.

I don’t think this is quite true when it comes to YouTube. There are plenty of alternatives that content creators could use (and some do), from Vimeo to Nebula to PeerTube.

The reason content creators prefer to upload on YouTube are the user base and monetization opportunities. They’re not forced to do so, and in fact YouTube is facing competition from e.g. Twitch and TikTok.

TORFdot0, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

I read the Jedi prince series and then the thrawn trilogy as a kid and teen. Jedi Prince does not hold up as an adult lol but was really good for my age at the time.

One thing I will say about reading EU novels is that it made hate the sequel movies when they came out for just throwing away the beloved characters instead of the expanding on them.

ChrisFhey, in What are some of the things you say / think to yourself when going through a hard time or dealing with uncertainty to help yourself along?

I don’t have anything special really. Just an “It is what it is” and try to get through regardless.

DharkStare, (edited ) in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

I’ve used both regularly for years and went back to Windows when I switched to PC gaming and it’s just so much better. Everything just works on Windows.

Linux really needs to work on improving its user experience if it wants to be a true competitor to Mac and Windows. All these little config tweaks and command line prompts you have to do to get things working on Linux just isn’t going to win a bunch of people over who are used to things being a few clicks on a wizard to get working.

Edit: it’s been years since I last tried Linux so maybe things have changed.

crystal,

What software were you trying to install that you couldn’t install by simply clicking the install button in the software store?

DharkStare,

It’s been too long so I don’t remember but there were several things I tried to install that required me to add a new repository, install from that, and then fiddle around with config files to get it to work.

Lots of people swear that Linux is easy but that’s never been my experience. It’s always command prompts and config files.

It’s been years since I last used Linux so maybe things have gotten better. I’ll likely be finding out eventually when Win 10 EOL comes because I don’t want Win 11.

bastion,

fwiw, I’m now pretty darn happy with Linux and gaming. Granted, I use Steam, so there’s that.

There are issues sometimes, but I just keep a copy of windows around for windows-only things. Generally, Linux “just works” for me, but I’ve also learned to just skip it when something requires too much involvement to get working.
