lugal, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

Disagreement is maybe best communicated by the absence of an upvote?

There is a quote “You can not not communicate” but on the internet you can. If I get no upvotes, I don’t know if no one has seen it or people actively ignored it and it’s a bad advice to feel disagreed on when no upvotes.

I personally feel frustrated when I get downvotes but no comments because I don’t know why I’m downvoted. Some instances here in the lemmyverse (like mine) don’t have downvotes enabled so I don’t even see downvotes.

I think it’s best to engage in a conversation if you disagree in a constructive way and downvote without comment if you feel this is beyond help.

FrostyCaveman, in What's your real-life superpower?

Good navigation ability and sense of where I am in relation to landmarks, places and even celestial bodies. Also works for time.

Some of my friends need phone GPS just to get around the city they’ve lived in for 15 years!

P1r4nha,

Jup, I have the same ability. Even in big, unknown cities I almost always find my way back. It’s almost like it’s saved in 3D in my brain.

I also always know where north is, even inside a building.

FrostyCaveman,

Nice. There are dozens of us.

I made a remark about where north is while in a building for a work conference a few weeks ago (the views were nice), and realised the person I was talking to had no idea what I was talking about!

GPS just to get around the city they’ve lived in for 15 years

I do, but only because it knows about upcoming traffic and construction so I can avoid it altogether instead of having to react once you’re stuck in it.

JaxiiRuff, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@JaxiiRuff@pawb.social avatar

No more reddit at all. I even blocked reddit on my search engine. Everyday lemmy as a service, the apps we use, and the content we see here are improving. It just takes time.

Fediverse is truly the last bastion we have against shit like twitter and reddit. Why do you think Threads will try to federate with us? its because they see the potential aswell. However we’ll see how that shakes up with almost everyone agreeing not to federate with them.

Nacktmull, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

That I was not able to play all my games on linux. I heard that it is now possible tough - with something called Proton.

Coeus,

Valve has contributed a lot into Proton for the Steam Deck which makes it great for Linux users.

raistlin,

Yeah proton works very well, in some rare cases running the games in question better than windows. Right now the main issue is games with super invasive kernel level anticheat, eg. Valorant, Siege, Fortnite, etc. So really mostly shooters.

Nacktmull,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

I play mostly indie titles with retro graphic, so that fits me well :)

raistlin,

Yeah those should work great.

HughJanus,

Not all of them. Some of them don’t work due to outright refusal from developers to support anti cheat on Linux.

TheButtonJustSpins,

What does anti-cheat mean in this context? Game developers don’t want to code measures to prevent cheating on Linux so they don’t support it at all?

public_static_int,

Some don’t even need to. EasyAntiCheat and BattlEye both have support for Linux and it’s up to the devs to enable support (or upgrade to a version that supports Linux). But in some cases, the companies just refuse to support it (Bungie with Destiny 2 for example)

Skyhighatrist,

Multiplayer games often use a third party anti-cheat software. Some of them work on Linux, some of them don’t. What the previous commenter was referring to specifically is that some anti-cheat, like easy anti cheat has been updated to work in proton, but it requires that game developer push out an update to enable that functionality. Some do, and some (Bungie) have outright refused to do it, and even threaten bans for players that try to play on Linux.

TheButtonJustSpins,

Ugh

Stuff like East Anti Cheat needs to have support for Linux essentially turned on. Otherwise the game won’t run even if WINE/Proton can run the game fine. I think a lot of devs don’t bother because they don’t know Linux in case OS specific support might be required, and the market was fairly small up until the Steam Deck came out.

For an example. A few weeks after the Steam Deck came out, suddenly Apex Legends and a few other games could be run on Linux without anti-cheat issues. The developers just turned on a switch and made a new build essentially.

For the longest of time is Linux users were mostly just told that people use Linux to cheat in games and that’s not really the case.

Overall though there is no real reason why anti-cheat software shouldn’t be able to work on Linux.

BobQuasit, in What's your real-life superpower?

I'm a supertaster and hypervigilant, so all my senses are dialed up to 11. My memory is also unusually good. Also my son claims I have "Poon vision", but I'm not crazy about that idea.

hoodlem, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

The thing is, downvotes mean whatever the person downvoting feels like they mean. Personally I don’t downvote anything, only upvote.

It would be interesting to have a bot that looks for bad actors—by that I mean users who abuse the downvote and do not use it the way the community agrees that it means. And have a mod review and take action if necessary.

GCanuck, in What's your real-life superpower?

Bit embarrassed to admit this, but I used to seriously believe I had the ability to read woman’s minds.

I used to walk into a party/bar and instantly know if I was going to have sex with a particular woman. This was virtually infallible. (Disclaimer: This didn’t happen every time I went to a party, nor did I necessarily choose the woman, but every time I felt that feeling I was right.)

Turns out many years later I realized I just had a good understanding of woman’s body language. And could tell when a woman found me attractive enough, and was horny enough, to let me pick her up.

FTR I do feel foolish for ever thinking I had some supernatural ability with women, but I was somewhat attractive and charming, so that went to my head.

MrSpaceMan1,

homeomorphism, in How do other Europeans survive the raining season in Asia?

I used to be overweight, but lost 25 pounds and I find that heat and humidity bother me much less than before. The other thing that helps is loose fitting linen clothing and wearing boxers instead of briefs.

Sept, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

We know what to do. But we do not do.

I don’t remember the movie it’s from, but that was hell of a movie!

gunnm, in Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?

You will find this type of people everywhere on social media.

I use Tildes and is this kind of place people circle jerk how smart and insightful they are using comments. One user had this long threaded comments and I just disagree at the end, he was so pissed. Second time it was with a Redditor coming with the same toxic echo chamber bs bringing to Tildes, my conclusion many redditors are toxic users that will spoil anywhere.

Don’t get me started with Hacker News.

No I don’t, why would I when there’s Lemmy with all this fine people?

Thorny_Thicket, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

For porn yeah but not for anything else. Been away for as long as my lemmy account is old

Tolookah, in What's your real-life superpower?

I know when a timer or alarm I set is about to go off. This sometimes works for timers I thought I set, so it’s kind of useful.

For alarms, It means I wake up a minute before the alarm

gunnm, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Still active on some niche communities that they don’t want to leave Reddit and only using it on desktop.
