NegentropicBoy, in What butterfly effect have you personally witnessed?

A hot dry windy day in summer, this guy rings my friend to complain about my friend parking near his house. My friend goes over to talk it over and notices a transformer is sparking onto dry grass, alerts fire people, saves town.

The question asked one butterfly effect you experienced, didn’t ask for one that I experienced. 🥲

j4k3, in Who is the third faction in the leaked Google memo about AI?
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

The open source researchers that took the meta weights and ran with them, and then superseded them, was how I read it. It was the overall innovations that made patching as effective if not more than recompiling from scratch.

I am curious how long this memo lasts as a real leak. Like I haven’t tried digging below the surface of information as presented, but most of this is indistinguishable from magic in actual practice. Like even open source, does not mean I have a chance in hell of compiling on my own, and modifying is completely absurd at this point. I wouldn’t mind learning, but I know I’m out of my depth on that one. Could this leak be a false flag or public passivation for political reasons? Making the publicly available options sound advanced and capable takes a lot of pressure off of proprietary efforts right as they are hitting a larger public focus.

sachasage,

I believe the memo is saying meta will benefit in the end because they can utilise community innovation already built in their own architecture

Just wanted to add that The Verge article quotes from the source document, but does not include its links, etc. Here’s a hyperlinked version, including some specific open source resources, which the author calls ‘third faction’ content: semianalysis.com/…/google-we-have-no-moat-and-nei…

Melatonin,

Hell of a good read there

BartsBigBugBag,

Yep, that is what I got out of it too.

auf, in What butterfly effect have you personally witnessed?

I opened YouTube for a short break to spend 5 hours in vain.

FilipR, in If you could witness any historical event firsthand, which one would you choose and why?

A roman triumph.

CynicalStoic, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

What state do you live in?

I know I’m doing good WHEN I get served this kind of content. I don’t browse YT logged in, my browser always deletes cookies upon closure, and I run Ghostery/add block plugins.

Living in Texas, I kinda assume that is why I constantly get this right wing content (ads, vid recommendations). I figure my location is all they know about me and so that is why I get served this content.

It just tells me they don’t know anything about me so my countermeasures are working 🤞🏼

Lemminary, in What's the worst thing you've ever smelled?

The body odor of a friend who got out of bed when I was crashing at his house. I wanted to throw up on the spot, it was awful. I’m not sure what it was, but it smelled like he hadn’t showered in months but he didn’t smell like that the previous day.

Wahots,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

He probably hasn’t changed his sheets, so the surprising amount of swear you she in bed, along with the considerable amount of dead skin, bacteria, hair, and skin oils are causing seriously bad BO.

There’s a reason why I have a waterproof bed protector. Wash the sheets ever week or two weeks, wash the bed protector every couple. Your bed won’t smell musty or get bad dust mites that way.

Lemminary,

He probably hasn’t changed his sheets

That’s what I thought, but they honestly didn’t smell bad at all. I remember they were odorless which really threw me for a loop. I wonder if he had some unknown condition or shat himself while asleep or something. But I’ll never know because we stopped being friends for other reasons. sad noises

Wahots,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Was it like, a body odor smell? Or a different smell?

Lemminary,

This was a few years ago so my smell memory is shaky, but I think it was body odor? The thing is he got up so fast and rushed to the bathroom so it may have been something else, or maybe it was from the embarrassment

Meanwhile, I was trying no to make noise while gagging the ha hardest I’ve ever gagged in my life lol

ShoePaste, in F*ck, Marry, Kill: Bread, Pasta, Rice.
@ShoePaste@lemmy.ml avatar

Does a tortilla count as bread, cuz if not bread gets killed. I think id marry pasta cuz i love noodles and fuck rice. But not gonna lie, id be cheating on noodles constantly

zik, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

Check your gutters to make sure they’re clear and there’s no standing water in them. It’s easy to miss it up there.

PerCarita, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?
@PerCarita@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

You can view what Google “knows” about you on your account settings. I made my account when I was very young, I lied about my age and my gender, then it made assumptions based on my interests of my professional situation. I guess many people in my gender and age group, sharing my actual interests (tech, movies, culture, food) are also interested in the kind of content you described (Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, Yiannopolous, etc). I keep clicking “not interested”, but the algorithm keep suggesting these videos to me. I don’t mind that Google doesn’t know my politics. I’m a feminist, but there’s really not a lot of interesting discourse about feminism on Youtube, so I just read and attend real life lectures instead.

derf82, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

I get them all the time. Pro-gun crap, Jordon Peterson, Joe Rogan, and other trash. I constantly hit “don’t recommend this channel” or “show me less of this” but they still come. I honestly think Youtube is getting paid off.

jossbo,

Anger drives engagement because your m more likely to comment when you’re angry. If you’re fine you probably just move on. So the algorithm prioritises stuff that makes people angry.

ablackcatstail, in What are the best fediverse alternatives to youtube?
