OverfedRaccoon, in Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Spez is doubling down. He's shown his hand. He's lied. It's like watching Anakin's descent to the dark side. He's too far gone.

I don't really think there is a going back. The watering hole is poisoned. There's no more good faith. And, I think for a lot people, especially people here, it's a matter of principle at this point.

I might check in on certain niche subs that don't move on to other platforms, but the days of gleefully doomsctolling are over.

MigratingtoLemmy, in Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?

No. I'll use RSS to lurk on subs that don't move, but this more and fragmentation has pushed me to finally try and curb my endless scrolling habits (by utilising IRC, I now only go through small bytes of content, and if I don't feel like it is important, I don't waste any more time).

lunarshot,
@lunarshot@lemmy.world avatar

do you have any more info on how to get started with this? I have no desire to go back but would love to know how to loosely lurk like that

MigratingtoLemmy,

Download any FOSS RSS client for your OS. I'm looking at:

  1. https://github.com/yang991178/fluent-reader
  2. https://github.com/hello-efficiency-inc/raven-reader
  3. https://github.com/nkanaev/yarr

I'll be switching from QuiteRSS which is not maintained anymore.

Then, find how to get rss feeds for whatever you want (Reddit, Lemmy and Youtube are fairly easy). That's all

PriorProject, in Lemmy API?

This is the wrong community for this question, it's an open-ended discussion forum like AskReddit... not a support forum for Lemmy.

That said, check out the v18 API before you start writing a bot. It's going to change in a big way shortly.

fubo, in How do we feel about Meta joining the Fediverse?
SuperIce,

Is that necessary though? I feel like we should let them join. If they do something malicious, then we can block them. IMO, it doesn't make sense to just preemptively block them for no real reason.

Cynosure,

It is wholly necessary. They will start massive data mining operations if they join, harming users of all instances.

bric,

Data mining can happen without any of that, everything you post in the fediverse is literally available for anyone to see. Realistically, the most harm they can do is build controlled communities that grow so huge that they drown out all of the fediverse's open communities.

Look at what happened with Google Chrome and browser standards. We don’t want a company that dominates the landscape changing the rules in their favour.

BrainisfineIthink,
@BrainisfineIthink@lemmy.one avatar

Your most harm scenario is exactly what they want to do.

TrinityTek,

They've demontrated their evil nature in the past, promoting divisive and inciteful material and anything to drive engagement for the sake of advertiser dollars. I don't think we need to wait for them to do it again in the Fediverse. Better to head that shit off right up front.

Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. Microsoft did it before, we shouldn't let Meta do it now.

BuckShot686, in What song do you listen to when you are upset and want to calm down?
@BuckShot686@beehaw.org avatar

Dizzy Wright - Killem Wit Kindness

This song always helps me realize how being upset is really nothing more than a barrier to clear thought and working past differences. Great jam to boot too!

Monkeyhog, in Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?

Nope, I've already deleted all of my comments and posts on a 10+ year old account. They can go straight to hell. Fuck them.

doctortofu, in What communities ("subreddits") would you like to see?
@doctortofu@reddthat.com avatar

My local subreddit, but it will sadly never happen, because the overwhelming majority of users there simply don't care about whatever spez or reddit is doing - they didn't even do the 48h blackout, just complete apathy. Oh well, I'll miss it, but not enough to actually go back there, so it's all good.

godless,
@godless@latte.isnot.coffee avatar

Well, time for you to create it and hope that a new generation of lemmy users will eventually find their place.

happyhippo, in Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?

Nope, my account is gone and so are my comments.

I'm done with reddit.

Either Lemmy takes off, or I may start reading more in my free time...

thegiddystitcher, in What communities ("subreddits") would you like to see?
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

None really, got all my crafts here already and my other account has all kinds of gamedev communities to follow. Now that Star Trek is here and a couple of people have set up Eurovision communities, not to mention UKCasual is here, I'm pretty sorted!

Just need more people to join in with the ones that exist, now.

If it doesn't show up on the list, just type in the entire lemmy.gmhy.ml and continue, the list doesn't show you all lemmy instances just the ones the devs put on the list.

HeapOfDogs, in What communities ("subreddits") would you like to see?

I really miss my local city sub. It had barely any traffic but it would keep me in touch with certain events abs news.

Ministar, in How do we feel about Meta joining the Fediverse?

People are being really hypocritical.

You want a free open source social network. But when people you dont like join it, you hate it. That is not how it works, its not how FREE in FOSS works.

Meta can join, they can do whatever they want. It literally the point of this social network. If you dont like it, then go to a social network that is not FOSS, but is heavily moderated, because that is what most of you really want.

HandOfDoom,

"Freedom" can be used to justify lots of really bad stuff. Meta has too much money to be trusted, they WILL fuck the Fediverse up eventually for more profit on the first chance they get (and people with lots of money always get those chances).

And it's not just about morality and the fucked up stuff that's happened on Meta, Iike the Cambridge Analytica scandal. I stopped using Facebook years ago because of the low quality of the content being posted there. And last week I logged back in to sell some stuff and oh boy, the content managed to get even worse.

I don't want growth just for the sake of growth. We don't need big corporations getting involved.
