rozno, in What's your real-life superpower?
@rozno@roznotech.xyz avatar

For me, remembering numbers; like ID numbers, part numbers, phone numbers, etc. When I worked as a parts guy at a shop, I would frequently be able to bring up the exact part that fits the customer’s machine assuming I had looked it up once or twice before. If it was something I hadn’t looked at in a while I’d still usually double check fitment, but I probably had a 99% accuracy on part numbers.

lemminer, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

You might need to remove some of those popular communities to extract what you are actually looking for. Because the posts from the popular communities stay on the top of your list. That worked for me.

syklone, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

My primary desktop is Windows 11, but literally no other computer I personally own runs Windows. Part of it is games, part of it is proprietary software (music production, dj, etc). I could probably game on Linux full time, but until the commercial software situation is improved I will always have an additional Windows or Mac computer.

j4k3, in What would you call a monarchist government where multiple families rules in turns?
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

Aristocracy

Could be a Plutocracy

Could be Nepotocracy

Personally, I would avoid using the term oligarchy because it has become something of a trend term used as a negative label in US political culture and synonymous with Russian (self described) backwardness and corruption.

I would write in a nod to how humans usually dilute themselves in their political labels and oversimplified ideology. No one calls themselves what they are directly. Like I default assume every monarch believes in their own fantasy meritocracy.

The concept you described could hold parallels to the papal conclave and election process. I would use this as a loose framework to make the ideas relatable.

It could also be a Magocracy depending on the fantasy.

J12, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Hadn’t been in 3 days besides accidentally opening Apollo. I’m going to stop by one of these days and edit and delete my comments and posts.

nobodyimportantatall, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

No, I have a couple small communities that I have pull into an RSS reader that still works somehow, but I stay logged out and never comment. 12 year account with 29k karma and I quit cold turkey and mostly went back to RSS feeds.

The ability to remember the lyrics to basically any pop song from 1990s-2010s

yads,

I think there’s a gameshow for you to make some money off of this power

Candelestine, in What would you call a monarchist government where multiple families rules in turns?

Personally I’d call it that system the vampires used in Underworld, but I’m not that sophisticated. I’d also be tempted to call it Musical Thrones.

vis4valentine,
@vis4valentine@lemmy.ml avatar

Musical Thrones.

Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Musical Thrones.

jerebear205, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Just for the porn tbh.

chilly_pupper,

The mobile app Geddit is good for this on Android. You can browse without being signed in and it gets around the nsfw API restrictions because it’s just scraping the website.

github.com/kaangiray26/geddit-app

jmp242,

You know, of all the things to use reddit for - porn never occurred to me. It’s not like there aren’t literally thousands of dedicated sites for that…

jerebear205,

It’s the social aspect that is pretty fun, filled the void caused by Tumblr nuking NSFW stuff. I had both a swf and nswf account if that makes a difference, I didn’t use reddit just for porn…

s_s, (edited ) in What would you call a monarchist government where multiple families rules in turns?

So a monarch that can’t appoint their own heir really isn’t much of a monarch. The point of being a monarch is not being beholden to any rules.

This is just an oligarchy with rules that don’t benefit 3/4th of the participants–which is as odd as it sounds.

After all, the point of 4-5 year terms in modern democracies is that you don’t have to wait your whole life to take over.

It’s an interesting concept, but coming to this arangement–and maintaining it in perpetuity–must have been an extremely extrordinary set of circumstances.

Is the monarch required to be sacrificed every so often? That would kinda mimic the Aztec Festival of Toxcatl, where an impersonator of the god Tezcatlipoca was sacrificed every year after being treated like a god for the year. The god-man was usually selected from royal families. He had religous function and was provided for in specific ways (eg a harem) but he wasn’t a monarch.

It was. I don’t want to spoil my own lore, but this is the solution they found to prevent mutual extermination through civil wars.

charonn0,
@charonn0@startrek.website avatar

You may want to read up about the Roman Empire’s experiment with tetrarchy (rule by four emperors), which was in part an attempt to prevent civil wars.

GlowingLantern,
@GlowingLantern@feddit.de avatar

That’s only for absolute monarchies, though.

Jajcus,

The point of being a monarch is not being beholden to any rules.

Not really. Absolute monarchy is not the only kind of monarchy. There are also constitutional monarchies and various in-between. Even absolute monarchies usually are defined by some rules (e.g. succession of power in hereditary monarchies).

ablackcatstail, in What would you call a monarchist government where multiple families rules in turns?
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I would call it a Dynasty.

vis4valentine,
@vis4valentine@lemmy.ml avatar

Was there some ancient Dynasty that worked like this?

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Well point of fact, yes, look at Chinese history. Chinese history is often summed up as being the “Dynastic Cycle.” A dynasty would be generations of a single family ruling over a population.

Tischkante, in What's your real-life superpower?

Scott,
@Scott@kbin.social avatar

Also highly adaptable. I’m never concerned with things changing. I just change with it. Also people. I adapt to whomever in with almost immediately and without even thinking about it. Downside of that is sometimes I’m not sure who I actually am. Am I being myself or just the people I’m around.

homeomorphism, in How do other Europeans survive the raining season in Asia?

I used to be overweight, but lost 25 pounds and I find that heat and humidity bother me much less than before. The other thing that helps is loose fitting linen clothing and wearing boxers instead of briefs.

viridian, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Yeah unfortunately. There are some subs that haven’t migrated over yet and some subs that are active that have really useful info for me (school, language learning, etc.)

jagged, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

No one is ever on their deathbed wishing they had worked more.

(And quotes of that ilk). It’s genuinely something that informs the structure of every day for me.
