oryx, in What are some of the "small things" you appreciate about Lemmy over Reddit?
@oryx@lemmy.world avatar

Seeing downvotes as soon as there's at least one is so cool to me. Very small detail, but it makes a pretty big impact.

Edit: I appreciate the downvote to display this awesome feature 👍

other_world,

Reddit used to have that with a browser add on called Reddit Enhancement Suite. They cut off access to the downvote numbers a while ago. I’ve missed it ever since.

@ILikeMultis@lemmy.ml avatar

Downvotes were shown by default without RES. They removed it but RES dev made it possible somehow.

SurpriseWaterfall,

Even with RES, I remember seeing a few years ago that Reddit does some form of obfuscation with karma. So no one really knows the true number of downvotes and upvotes.

In all the history of the world, there has never been an effective technological solution to a sociological problem, legislation mandating such a solution notwithstanding.

Any technological solution you find or build that appears to be effective is merely an illusion of effectiveness to those unaware of its limitations.

PriorProject, in How do we deal with similar communities on different Lemmy instances?

Say what you will about reddit, at least an established subreddit was the place to gather on the topic, ie r/technology etc.

This premise on which your question is based isn't actually true though. There's /r/technology and also /r/tech. There's /r/DnD and also /r/dndnext. As of recently, for some reason there are like 35 nearly identical amitheasshole subreddits with different names.

I feel like what you're observing is just that reddit communities are mature, people have had time to gravitate to whichever community is more active or has better quality moderation and so there is generally a "winner" sub with more participation because... unless there's a major problem with the bigger sub it tends to be more interesting than a less well-trafficked sub.

Lemmy, in contrast, is still fairly wild-west. Most communities are not very active and have only a few subscribers. If a competing community with an overlapping topic appears, folks are willing to subscribe to it just in case it takes off. If Lemmy continues to retain a healthy number of users, I expect in most cases that consolidation would set in unless there were major differences in moderation policy or something else that splits the community into factions that align across server or community boundaries... and over time you'll see a similar layout of one or two dominant communities and a long tail of tiny ones that few pay attention to.

Rhabuko, in What is your favourite Lemmy community, which is not on lemmy.ml?
@Rhabuko@feddit.de avatar

I'm on feddit.de, which is a German server whith a friendly community. There's also feddit.it and feddit.dk for Italian or danish people. Would be cool if we see more European feddits, that work together and help each other out.

And for my favorite communities that aren't on lemmy.ml

!gaming on beehaw.org and !ich_iel (which is the German version of me_irl) on feddit.de

!gamedev now with proper link :) Tried linking it on mobile using the new Mlem iOS app and managed to crash it. :D

alex,

Do you federate with Beehaw? I have a 404 every time I look for a blahaj.zone community from Beehaw :(

thegiddystitcher,
@thegiddystitcher@beehaw.org avatar

I'm on Beehaw and managed to join this one ok. I think there's a delay when the first person tries to search for an instance, before it actually shows up in results. Not ideal but maybe try it again now?

This is a support question, please see the sidebar for communities where you can ask this kind of question. Removing per rule #3.

Lemsters sounds cool (I just thought of it last night haha)

monkic, in With the way the world's going, is there even a point to anything anymore?
@monkic@kbin.social avatar

That's how I've been feeling for years now, intensified with the fact that there's not enough being done even as things escalate faster than expected. As someone with lifelong anxiety and depression, what I've learned is to not focus on my own helplessness and lack of self-worth, but instead what I can do and contribute in any little way to any person or creature. It's up to every one of us to give our own life meaning, and I'm trying to choose kindness.

mojo, in With the way the world's going, is there even a point to anything anymore?

What else you gonna do, lay down and die? Life is a short amount of time anyways. Just make best with what you got. YOLO

Holodeck_Moriarty, in With the way the world's going, is there even a point to anything anymore?

There are real problems, but be wary of news/social media that use doom & gloom for engagement. Algorithms will drown you in the most extreme takes, even when on the “right side” of real issues.

Just try to do the right thing, and don’t let the internet scare you into not living your life.

NightOwl, in With the way the world's going, is there even a point to anything anymore?

Climate is fucked, but regarding everything else the world wasn’t a utopia back then either. Poverty, war, corrupted overlords, etc have always existed.

Life has been pointless in the grand scheme of things and unfair, and been up to each individual to try and find

grahamsz,

I suppose that's what I come back to.

My parents lived with the threat of nuclear annihilation, my grandparents fought in ww2. My gg parents lived through ww1. Most of everyone before them lived in relative poverty.

I'm not sure id take any of them over the current situation. Certainly there are massive problems looming that will cause lots of suffering, but humans do find joy and purpose at all times

exohuman, in With the way the world's going, is there even a point to anything anymore?
@exohuman@kbin.social avatar

It’s up to you to give your life meaning. Just because things suck, doesn’t mean it’s time to throw in the towel. Imagine the Bronze Age humans, who were getting killed over idols and and some random warlord’s whims. They persisted in the face of adversity so we exist today. Imagine the lives of the enslaved, raped, and oppressed native Americans and Africans in the face of Spanish rule in South America. They persisted with no clear future freedom in sight.

I could go on about humans facing horrible situations but my point is this: throughout history we have always faced a dark situation as a result of other human actions but we always found a reason to persist… or even fight back.

discodoubloon,
@discodoubloon@kbin.social avatar

Exactly. In my current state persistence is key. The question “When do you want to give up the fight?” is a good one. Im hoping that everyone can get a world where they feel mostly happy. Things might go bad quickly but it’s important to remember the small things and create happiness for yourself, even if temporary (it always is).

Shit sucks; deal with it. Also you know be cool to people and they’ll be cool back.

@zlatiah@kbin.social avatar

(insert astronaut meme) never has been

Jokes aside... This is my personal philosophy & probably won't align with everyone's. As someone who started science quite young, I realized quite early that beyond societal issues, literally nothing is "meaningful"... If Earth itself will be gone in a few billion years, might as well practice some optimistic nihilism and do some stuff with whatever life I have. There's still stuff to do even if society doesn't prioritize ppl like me

neko, in With the way the world's going, is there even a point to anything anymore?

There’s nothing we can do as individuals unless you own a multinational corporation, and we’re all going to die in a few decades, so just have fun now

Nusm, in With the way the world's going, is there even a point to anything anymore?

I mean… I just found Lemmy. So there’s that. 🤷
