drekly, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I had an S10E that I loved. But then I had a baby and wanted better pictures as memories. So I upgraded the camera I had on me at all times, and went for an S22U. Took a while to get used to the huge size difference, but I couldn’t be happier.

Also got it ‘used’ from Facebook marketplace, brand new in its box for almost half price. The guy had it as a free upgrade from his service provider, didn’t want to change phones, and wanted some quick cash for it. Had all the paperwork and everything.

That’s a very wholesome story

luthis, (edited ) in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?

Bergsons theory of mind. I wish i understood it enough to put a tldr, but its complex and has been misunderstood.

Heres another one. Michael behe’s mousetrap. He likens cellular structure as a mousetrap, with every piece forming a necesesary part, and without any one part it ceases to function.

Back when i was a creationist christian and didnt accept evolution as fact, he was a hero. Endogenous retroviral dna put that all to rest. Except maybe not.

The counter arguments were that other structures could form over time to create the minimalist structures we see today, like using scaffolding to construct a self sustaining roman bridge or replacing the wooden base of the mousetrap with the floor. Obviously behe is mistaken.

But he claims not, that he doesnt argue that variants of mousetraps can’t exist. He argues that all exist without scaffolding. We dont see cellular structures with unnecessary parts that can be acted upon by evolution. Everything already is the end product after evolution has selected away the unnecessary parts. So how can evolution be happening the way its described? We just go between different end products. Theres no structures still with scaffolding.

This keeps me up at night. Maybe theres more to evolution that we dont know yet.

ShadowAether, in How safe is it to eat raw eggs?

Other people are right, that there are ways to reduce the risk of contracting salmonella. However, I’d point out it’s highly unlikely you’d get salmonella from eating raw eggs once. If you wanted to eat them regularly then that’s a different story

Gleddified, in What password manager do you recommend?

I don’t want to self host

IMO Keepass is not for you then. Bitwarden all day

Candid_Technology_66,

But you can sync your database across devices using Syncthing or a cloud storage like MEGA.

Magnetar,

Keepass + Syncthing is great, works also on phones.

winterayars, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

The united states already imprisons , and unevenly at that.

interdimensionalmeme,

77 million people have a criminal record ?? What the fuck

ickplant, in What movie scared you shitless when you were a child?
@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

The 1990 remake of the Night of the Living Dead. I was like 10 when I saw it, and then I had to walk through a dark forest alone to get home (I was supposed to walk with older girls but they left me behind). I legitimately thought I was going to die.

Akasazh,

The original for me. I watched that whilst smoking a j and got a true panic attack. Only movie ever I had to switch off.

lorez, in How do you enjoy listening to digital content? Speakers? Headphones? Earbuds?

I have a pair of Focal Elegia connected to my Pc via a Sabaj a20d DAC. They sound great. Sometime in the future I wanna upgrade them to the Stellia.

where_am_i, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

The world around you uses Instagram daily. They do need a better camera and all the AI photo enhancement filters. Plus, consumerism, you know.

Other than that, there’s no technical reason to buy anything better than what flafhsips were a few years back. I have one and it’s constantly underutilized.

I mean, maybe 5G or wifi 6 could be a reason to migrate.

aliceblossom,

maybe 5G or wifi 6

This is why we need phones with swappable modules. I’m pretty sure my current phone could last for decades if I could replace it’s radio equipment to keep up with modern standards.

heimchen,

I would love to build a smartphone like a Desktop Pc.

Or – Christ it’s 2023 – Apple’s first fucking USB-C phone. Holy mother of god, having one stupid cable for the devices I want was a siren song of a mad god, but we’re finally here.

Gork, in For those that are, how are you keeping track of tropical weather this year?

earth.nullschool.net is a pretty cool visualizer of all things meteorological.

Rally’s in the 90s, then they all disappeared and came back as garbage.

In-N-Out Animal Style no contest

anaximander, (edited ) in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

If people who break laws can’t vote, and the government decides what the law is and appoints the judges who enforce those laws, then the government currently in power can decide who gets to vote. Obviously there’s an incentive there to make laws that disproportionately affect those who weren’t going to vote for you, and thereby remove most of your opposition’s votes. That way lies dictatorship.

It also makes it hard to change bad laws. For a random example, there used to be laws against homosexuality. How do you think LGBT acceptance in law would be doing if anyone who was openly gay or trans lost their right to vote? How do you improve access to abortion if anyone who has an abortion, provides an abortion, teaches young people about abortion, or seeks information about abortions becomes unable to vote? How do you change any unjust law if the only people who can vote are those who are unaffected - or indeed, those who benefit from the status quo?

Sage_the_Lawyer,

See, e.g., the war on “drugs”

The GOP has been working towards making the US a dictatorship since the 60s. We passed the civil rights act and the right was so appalled that they had to treat people of color like, well, people, that they’ve been coming up with new ways to ensure progress never happens again ever since.

nickajeglin,

Preach.

BananaPeal, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?
@BananaPeal@sh.itjust.works avatar

Mainly early 2000s “Whose Line is it Anyway?” hoedowns. My favorite is the one where they make fun of Colin’s baldness.

DarthNinja, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Riding my bike for long rides? Absolutely love it.

Slinging weights in the gym and sweating my ass off on an elliptical machine? Hate every second. But I listen to audio books in the gym, and that makes it much more enjoyable. Im envious of people who actually enjoy the gym lol.

I very much like how I feel after the gym, and overall when Im active which is why I keep going back.

HobbitFoot, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

Because they aren’t getting rid of one vote, but tens of thousands.

There are a lot of Republican states that are Republican mainly due to voter suppression.

prole,

It’s win/win for them. Thousands of fewer (likely mostly) Democratic leaning voters, and thousands of additional people counted in their census.

PerogiBoi, in What is the craziest thing that's ever happened in your life?
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

My father took up a side gig consulting for the Russian government. They paid him in envelopes of American $100 bills. Then he met a grad student and started an affair with her and then divorced my mom and left the family to move to his apartment in Russia then moved to China to raise his new child and then unsuccessfully attempted to sue my whole family and I for sharing the same last name with him “fraudulently”.
