MamboGator, (edited ) in Do you interact more in Lemmy?
@MamboGator@lemmy.world avatar

I think the reasons I’m more inclined to interact on Lemmy/Mastodon are because, firstly, the fact that we were all attracted to the fediverse means we instantly have something in common in addition to whatever subject matter our chosen instances and communities focus on.

Secondly, the communities are a lot smaller—for now. This could be a temporary thing if Reddit continues hammering nails into its own coffin, or the fediverse might be niche enough that it never becomes as massive. But right now, posting a comment on Reddit feels like shouting into the void whereas Lemmy is like tossing a message in a bottle into the ocean. Neither are great for communicating, which I have always felt is the biggest problem with this format compared to classic message boards; but at least the message in a bottle is more likely to wash up on a shore where it might be seen.

lazylion_ca, in What's the most unique role model you've heard that was a green flag?

A lot of the guys from Wu Tang Clan seem to be pretty chill.

Cockmaster6000, in What is a good scary/horror movie to watch this month?

The Void is great if you like campy lovecraftian stuff

I was pretty active on reddit also

AceSLS, in Do you interact more in Lemmy?

I certainly do. Most social media algorithms feed you content that it thinks will generate interactions. Lemmy does not do that which results in whatever you decide to post having more meaning because there’s no stupid and/or manipulative machine deciding wheter your post is or isn’t worth seeing

redimk, in What do you use to backup all your photos and documents, cloud or external drive or both?
@redimk@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I use: 1 copy in my primary SSD on my laptop 1 copy in my secondary SSD on same laptop, which autosyncs to: 1 copy in OneDrive family plan 1 copy on an external SSD

Kind of based on the 3-2-1 method.

The Lord of the Rings. I get goosebumps every time.

Reply with your favorite moment. There’s lots of them in the trilogy.

Wumbologist,

So many great ones in this trilogy.

Ride out with me.

and

a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!

get me every time.

FrostyCaveman,

Aragorn’s speech at the Black Gate… hmm or maybe when Elrond gives Anduril to Aragorn… or most scenes Gandalf is in

MajorMajormajormajor,

“You are soldiers of Gondor! No matter what comes through that gate you will stand your ground!”

Grond boops his way through the gate.

Armoured Olog-hai push through wrecking the place.

Gandalf: surprised-pikachu.jpeg

FrostyCaveman,

GROND!

Scrof,

LotR movies never fail to give me the chills even from static jpeg memes lol

bionicjoey,

Gandalf at the end of the battle of Helm’s Deep

Ticklemytip,

I can’t carry it for you Mr.Frodo… BUT I CAN CARRY YOU!

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

Hell yes. I remember watching that during the premiere in theaters many years ago, and it was so emotional and powerful. Fucking love these movies so much.

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

This isn’t an “all hope is lost” moment in the movies, but I have to bring it up anyway.

Aragorn bursts into the throne room, “The beacons have been lit! Gondor calls for aid.”

Commence 30 seconds of silent anticipation.

Théoden, King of Rohan: “And Rohan will answer.”

Hell yeah!

shasta,

I think he’s referring to the last battle where everyone basically agrees that they are all doomed unless Frodo is still alive and has the ring so they decide since all hope is lost, they’ll put all their men on the front line in the hope of buying Frodo an opportunity to get to Mt Doom. But I think most of them only go along with it because they know they are pretty much gonna die either way.

Resol, in What popular quote are you tired of hearing?
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”

You do realise that people who are awake during the night are of equal importance, who’s gonna run those power plants and radio stations and petrol service stations and police forces and whatever else? If they shut off during the night, there’d be chaos. At least a chaos that most folks won’t see because they’re asleep or something.

intensely_human,

You realize that “important” is a different word not appearing in the set of “healthy, wealthy, and wise” right?

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

I’m probably guessing that SOME night people are healthy, wealthy and wise. Huge emphasis on the word “some”.

glnpf148, (edited )

To be fair: The people messing up their bio rhythms doing night shift after night shift might not necessarily be considered ‘healthy’.

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

Fair point

justlookingfordragon, in What's the most unique role model you've heard that was a green flag?
@justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

Morticia and Gomez Addams.

They’re unapologetically weird, fiercely in love with each other, they support and love their children unconditionally, they’re brutally honest with each other, including openly showing affection without giving a damn about what others may think of them. They’re one of the best (fictional) examples of caring parents and lovers, and I will die on that hill.

Everythingispenguins,

I have this vague memory of an interview where this was being talked about and how showing them as kind, loving people with real emotions was somewhat controversial. If anyone knows what I am talking about please chime in.

justlookingfordragon,
@justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe you mean this? www.youtube.com/watch?v=i78_re3fq5U ;)

A_Random_Idiot,

Anjelica Houston and Raul Julia.

There will never be a more iconic Morticia and Gomez.

They are my absolute relationship goal. I want to find a partner that embraces my weird and loves it whole hearted and unashamedly, and I theirs.

Sadly, as I get older, I realize its never gonna happen.

penquin, in What do you use to backup all your photos and documents, cloud or external drive or both?
@penquin@lemmy.kde.social avatar

I have a Synology server. I have an external drive. I have an extra 2TB drive on my PC. I have two large storage thumb drives. I have a Google photos account. I have an Instagram, I have a pixelfed account. I have a drop box account. I have a mega account. They all hold my photos. Do you want more? 😂

redballooon,

Some sort of order. Chronological will do, but maps are also nice

After reading many of these, one popped into my head. Iron Eagle.

surewhynotlem,

That’s ridiculous. There was absolutely no chance he was going to fail with that soundtrack.

Fogle, in What popular quote are you tired of hearing?

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. And as far as I can tell Einstein never said it but it’s always attributed to Einstein

CileTheSane,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

If I just rolled a 6 I’m not going to expect the same result if I roll the die again.

simulacra_simulacrum, in How is your part of the world doing?

Canada

People seem a lot more stressed. This least year people have gotten a lot quicker to road rage.

Since the pandemic I don’t hear any of the hopeful future rhetoric people used to believe blindly (we’ll invent our way out of peak oil don’t worry)

I would say the constant stress that only those making under $30,000 used to feel in 2014 now applies to those making under $60,000

Everythingispenguins,

I have a friend who makes about 60 a year and he told me about a year ago. It shouldn’t be this hard…

VieuxQueb,
@VieuxQueb@lemmy.ca avatar

I make around 60k and I barely can afford to survive. And I have a decent rent (1000$), but car payments, insurance, phone, internet and food all got more expensive. I can’t even afford a vacation anymore ! I barely make it and I think of those single parents trying to get by with less and it breaks my heart. If I a single man with no kids have to skip meals once in a while I can only imagine what those poor kids have to go through.

iByteABit,

Marx was right and it’s getting obscenely obvious

simulacra_simulacrum,

I remember reading that he saw communism arising naturally after late stage capitalism, not before. Unless I’m filling in the blanks of my memory.

iByteABit,

If you can blame him for anything, you can say that he couldn’t imagine just how bad late stage capitalism could get.

Though I’m not sure if that takes away from his other arguments or makes them all the more prevalent.

simulacra_simulacrum,

He nailed the bigger plot points but yeah, who could have seen the mind boggling scale of everything back then. Technology really amped things up.

WUED, (edited ) in What's a button you hate tapping or clicking accidentally?

I cant remember if it’s Facebook messenger or WhatsApp as I don’t use either that often, but one of them has a button on the keyboard to send like animated images or something and it’s so easy to hit that button and then select an image but the problem is that it doesn’t add it to a message which you then have to send, it just sends it straight away. I’ve sent some really inappropriate things to people I hardly know as a result, and I don’t feel like the attempt at an explanation helps.

The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland.

Edit to add: Bert literally stops the movie at one point to fourth-wall how hopeless everything looks. Ernie reassures him by asking what kind of movie would have a sad ending. Bert immediately replies Titanic.

Ticklemytip,

“I’d like to help ya, but I don’t speak English” that line always made me laugh
