afraid_of_zombies, in Other than Lemmy, what are you doing tonight?

Went out with some friends to a free lecture and then to a 24 hour diner.

Today,

What was the lecture about?

afraid_of_zombies,

History of Ethical Cultural and UU in the United States.

tourist, in What are some problems that countries outside the U.S. are dealing with?
@tourist@lemmy.world avatar

South Africa: Major energy crisis

Global: ADHD drug shortage

vivavideri,

AGAIN?!

tourist,
@tourist@lemmy.world avatar

It never ended

I’m guessing the lack of ADHD medication led some of those in charge of solving the problems to procrastinate.

vivavideri,

I had to switch to generic Vyvanse, at first because they couldn’t get brand out here, but now because insurance is like lol fuck you get generic or we won’t bother covering it

cactus_head,
@cactus_head@programming.dev avatar

I feel like those two problems could solve each other

Today,

Like a hamster wheel setup? They’re too distracted to stay on the wheel.

waterore, in Anyone else do "last chance socks"?

Yep but instead of throwing them away in the trash can that’s across the house I toss them into the convenient clothes hamper and end up wearing them again

Num10ck,

Death Row for life

Nemo,

Me too, but then I throw them in the laundry trash can when I’m sorting laundry later.

mysoulishome,
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

Yep I’m pretty sure our bedroom trash can only ever gets used for “retired” underwear, shirts and socks…

Nemo,

Mine is full of receipts I empty out of my pockets.

WEAPONX, in Lemmy, is there a treasured piece of content that you stop yourself from going back to "too often" so as to not dilute it?

Final Fantasy VIII. I want to play it all the time and i wish i could erase the plot from my memory and play it again for the first time.

match,
@match@pawb.social avatar

whoa

can you explain the plot of viii for me

RvTV95XBeo,

Moody teen saves the world with his oversized sword-gun.

Full disclosure, this one is big on the nostalgia for me as well.

cloudless,
@cloudless@feddit.uk avatar

I remember the annoying protagonist, the stupid magic draw system, the crippling final dungeon. I don’t remember the plot.

WEAPONX,

I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece. It carries nostalgic and sentimental value for me. I like it.

spacemanspiffy,

Easily one of my favorites too. It was my first FF so I don’t see a lot of the flaws others claim to.

new_guy, in Anyone else do "last chance socks"?

Wait what’s the trouble you’re experienceing trying to pull a sock?

mysoulishome, (edited )
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

Um…first, finding a matching one. If you’re just out of the shower maybe pulling it on is a pain. Maybe it catches on a sharp toenail. I’m exhausted.

Hell yeah! Proud of you, internet stranger. Quitting, I hear, is one of the most difficult things.

Darthjaffacake,

¡I second this completely! Smoking is so hard to get over and you should be unbelievably proud of yourself for being so strong in doing the right thing for yourself ❤️

Removing the stress of financial insecurity? Having enough income to seek professional and medical support? Of course it would help.

sentient_loom,
@sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works avatar

Professional help is overrated. But to the extent that it does help, it should be part of Healthcare, which should be publicly funded anyway.

Removing the stress of financial insecurity would surely help a lot.

ULS, (edited )

Yeah, I have done some therapy but in my mind there’s always something telling me that the therapy isn’t for the sake of humanity, it’s just for the sake of making honest living people functional in a world literally built to not allow or incorporate them into society. A lot of people’s benefits to good and society go unseen or not manifested because of this.

ULS,

I didn’t really mean seeking professional help. While that would be a good thing, what I meant is the problems wouldn’t have arisen in the first place.

corruptmagician, in Lemmy, is there a treasured piece of content that you stop yourself from going back to "too often" so as to not dilute it?

Vanth, (edited ) in Framework vs Macbook laptop?
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

What do you do on your laptop? For example, engineering students and STEM hobbyists probably want Windows, maybe Linux depending on their interests, specced out to run CAD or whatever simulation software their major will dictate. Graphic artists and photographer hobbyists might want Mac.

Framework laptops can ship with Windows already installed. You can also install Windows or Linux yourself, but Linux is not required.

You mention you don’t know Linux, but how comfortable are you with hardware? Can you open your current laptop and add memory? Are you interested in upgrading your laptop hardware periodically or is it going to be a chore you avoid?

Your question on 8 vs 16GB memory should be driven by your use. Personally, 8gb isn’t enough for me anymore, it locks out a lot of newer games and programs that I want to use. Does your school recommend OS and specs for your major? Make sure those are met at a minimum.

clark,
@clark@midwest.social avatar

I will be studying cyber security and network infrastructure with some limited script programming. I understand it is far easier to use Windows if you study in engineering.

I am interested in Linux, but seeing as Microsoft is very closed-off (cannot use installed versions of Microsoft365), I am a bit unsure if I want to fully commit to it. I am absolutely willing to try running it and getting a feel of it, though.

What does the process look like when you install Windows on your own? Is it difficult / costly?

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

If you think Microsoft has closed off Windows, what until you learn about Apple/Mac…

clark,
@clark@midwest.social avatar

I am aware of that, I was just saying.

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

No offense, but I don’t get why you’re looking at MAC OR FRAMEWORK.

You don’t need either, you’re not an Apple fanboy and you aren’t into graphic design or video editing type jobs/hobbies… Mac isn’t for you.

You aren’t into hardware or Linux, you don’t even have strong knowledge on how much memory you would need or what keeping it upgraded would entail. Framework isn’t for you.

Why not a normal Windows laptop where you aren’t paying a premium for branding? Unless the brand is what’s most important to you, in which case that’s totally your personal call. Want to be an Apple-vibe person or a Framework-vibe person?

Ejh3k, in Lemmy, is there a treasured piece of content that you stop yourself from going back to "too often" so as to not dilute it?

Hey, OP. Check out the podcast Dissect. They did a season breaking down each track of “Inside”. It was really interesting and really gave me a deeper appreciation for the entire project.

ech,

Oh neat. I’ll look into that. Thanks!

vamp07, in So is the US slipping into Civil War?

My take on it is that the Republicans will do their best to drag this out until the election. No compromising or middle ground. Just make it out to be the crazy Democrats fault. This stuff gets to be very predictable after all these years.

Test_Tickles,

Of course, they will drag it out until the elections. It is only being done because of the elections. It is all a performance to rally their base and get them to vote. Too many Republicans are tired of, or at least too embarrassed by, Trump and the other crazy fuckers, like the Freedom Caucus. While nothing is great, nothing is also so bad that they can really shit on Biden, at least not enough to rally around. Even his support of Israel isn’t something they can use against him since they are 120% pro Israel too. They also seriously need a smoke screen for the shit show that is the impending government shut down.
It’s all for show, a way to get the very poor but very racist core to take time off of their jobs to go vote for a states right to murder brown children while at the same time diverting attention from the fact that the reason that those poor racists aren’t getting their social security and other government support is due to the Republicans massive incompetence.

PP_BOY_, in What are some of the stranger adaptations/adjustments to corporate culture you've noticed, and imagine emerging?
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

The amount of people who just mindlessly accepted that certain words were forbidden has ruined any faith I had of us making it out of “this.” I’m not talking about hate speech, but seeing literal baby-speak like “corn” in place of porn, “rake” for rape, or “unalive” for suicide is ridiculous. How anyone can type those out in an otherwise serious context is beyond me

Crisps,

Some of that is just getting around dumb auto moderators.

solrize,

There was a science fiction novel a ways back where the government would “devive” its opponents, as a euphemism for “kill”.

Delphia,

I cant find the video but there was a very serious accident in Australia at a theme park and several people died. The ambulance crews who attended reported that “The patients suffered injuries incompatible with life” and the media had a fucking field day about how paramedics shouldnt be making jokes and how cold and insensitive it was and blah blah blah.

The Ambulance service had a press conference the following day which was one of the absolute best public ass chewings Ive ever seen. The guy tore into the media like a wolverine. Heavily paraphrased but - “Our paramedics are not doctors, legally speaking they cannot pronounce someone dead. They do however know that a man who has been literally torn to pieces by heavy machinery cant be helped. They have to stand there, look at that scene and make a realistic professional assessment that the patient has suffered injuries that nobody could survive and report that. Then they have to look at the next person… and report that professionally too… and then the next one… And without doing any investigation into our procedures and the why of them you decide to report on OUR professionalism!?!”

slazer2au,

Was it the Dream World incident?

Delphia,

Yeah, its easy to find the video of the initial statement. Cant find the followup though.

It was the most amazingly professional “go fuck yourselves” Ive ever heard.

popekingjoe,

This is pretty damn epic. Good on that ambulance service.

Sounds like the problem is the platforms and their algorithms, who are bending over for their advertiser overlords, who demand censorship. But nah, let’s get mad at kids just trying to make their bits. /s
