HootinNHollerin, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Sopranos

OhmsLawn, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Most of them?

I mean, these things are grossing hundreds of millions, and I haven’t been to the movies in almost a decade, don’t have TV, and seldom stream anything like TV or movies.

My video habits have gotten much more personal over the years. I’ll watch specific adaptations, and specific YouTubers, but that’s about it. For my brain-mush time, I generally play videogames and listen to audiobooks.

aew360, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

I’ve never seen Avatar (movie, not the anime)

rishado, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Godfather, Shawshank, lotr, the wire, six feet under, I’m sure there’s a lot more. I enjoy watching such epic films for the first time late on. Just having the time to approach them whenever I want is nice

aaaantoine, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Sopranos, Game of Thrones. Basically anything produced for HBO.

I caught the first 2-1/2 seasons of The Wire because of a promotion on Hulu.

It boils down to: I’m a cheapskate.

Kolanaki, (edited ) in What misconceptions do you still have that you learned from TV/film as a child?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

That I still have? If I still have any, it’s because I don’t know any different to be able to say I have any. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m sure there’s a few; I just can’t say for certain what they are.

Thorny_Insight, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

I haven’t seen Interstellar yet. It’s probably the biggest one though i don’t really watch movies or tv series much anyway so I haven’t seen almost anything recent. Also Godfather, Friends, Reservoir Dogs …

RainfallSonata, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

The Office. Arrested Development. Parks and Recreation. Breaking Bad. Game of Thrones.

Papanca, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Star Wars

Game of Thrones, The Sopranos and The West Wing are probably the biggest hitters.

I own 4 series of the Sopranos on DVD, but I’ve never got round to watching them.

shikitohno, in Tips on making your data less sellable?

Do they not have phones or emails? Why do they specifically need to contact you via Facebook? The whole setup sounds rather intrusive and unnecessary, just tell them to call or email you.

JustMy2c,

You know he’s the slave and the boss is the master, right? It’s not like HE can tell THEM what do ‘just’ do…

ULS, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

A lot of early 90s late 80s comedies. As a kid I always just thought it was adults acting really dumb. And for the most part I still think that about that era.

Maybe because cocaine and pills?

whiteheat29, in Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?

Framework is the laptop designed intentionally to be fixed. They just came out with a big size version with a dedicated GPU since you mentioned CAD.

You don’t need a desktop for CAD anymore.

If it’s your livelihood then stick with Windows. If you need a little reliability then Ubuntu will have the most support. Otherwise, pick your flavor of Linux that you like most.

Browsers are chromium v Firefox. They will both get the job done. Chrome (google version of chromium) plays nicest with your google account.

As for answers, unfortunately you have to hit up multiple sources for any question. Usually ask a pc magazine, YouTube, and Reddit/Lenny and compare the answers while remembering their base motivations for providing answer.

Lemmy, reddit, find groups (but even those are far from full proof) sadly the internet as a hole is now a corporate marketing suspit. Learn what you can about the core components of computing, look at spec sheets rather than reviews (reviews can be coloured by bias, the publisher may want to stay in the good graces of the manufacture or is just ill informed) although reviews can be helpful and not coloured.

Knowledge is power.

Ross_audio, (edited ) in What is this wire for?

Some manufacturers use standard audio connectors to carry just plain power.

They’re robust and can carry relatively high current and voltage.

It works, I can see why they get used. After all RCAs are on everything for everything.

I have an e-bike that uses an XLR as a charging port for the battery.

There’s an IR led on a cable with a 3.5mm jack somewhere that’s an extender for my home cinema system remote.

(That might be what this is, so see if your phone camera can see the IR light from a TV remote and then test it with that thing)

This possible LED plugged into something either home made/bespoke, very old, or Chinese.

Small chance it’s from some medical or scientific equipment that hasn’t moved with the times.

If it’s an LED put a DC voltage down that plug. If it’s a light sensor, measure for a DC voltage.

Audio AC signals didn’t have an effect so it’s probably a DC component.

My bet, point your phone camera at it and put a DC voltage down there in the right direction and you’ll see IR light come out.

It might be the receiver. In which case you need to monitor voltage. Then point a TV remote at it.
