I love EAS messages. The first part is actually three bursts of machine-readable data encoded as audio, and it’s completely incidental that it’s such a freaky sound.
There have been incidents of EAS-equipped devices triggering an alarm because an otherwise benign broadcast transmitted a valid EAS message without the short end-of-message bursts.
I don’t think the sound itself is freaky (i.e. I don’t think it’d be perceived as freaky by people not familiar with it or similar messages at all).
It’s the implication. At least I (as a non-American) associate the sound not with “generic public safety message” but firmly with “the president will now say goodbye to the nation and tell everyone to hug their loved ones one last time before the 3000 nukes/an asteroid/hostile aliens wipe out all life on Earth”.
I think some movies also used the sound for submarine Emergency Action Messages (aka the thing that makes those 3000 nukes fly).
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time!! It’s my favorite anime movie and time travel movie. It wasn’t widely released in the US though so the dvd is EXPENSIVE.
I really like Volcom shorts and pants. They tend to fit me a lot better (and with much greater consistency) than any other brand, even expensive ones. They’re pretty durable too. Nice that they’re not crazy expensive, but I also buy them from discount stores in the US for great prices. I never buy clothes at full price.
You could probably find Volcom clothes at skate shops in Europe. I have seen them on European online skateshops and stuff, if I’m remembering correctly.
My husband has been slowly replacing stuff with Myles Apparel. He’s a weightlifter, so finding clothes that fit his quads (and allows him to still, you know, move) is a tall order. No ripping, tearing, funky workout stink, or any other issues so far! Also looks like they can ship internationally.
While “The Butterfly Effect” was all right, Erased (both the anime and the live action series) really polished the concept and ran with it. It’s very rare for me to have praise for a live-action version of anything anime, but it gives strong S1 Stranger Things vibes while being incredibly different.
Somewhere in Time, which someone already mentioned. I wish I liked it more, but it gets credit because the Jack Finney book Time and Again, which it is very loosely inspired by, is one of the best time travel stories ever.
And Continuum. Not because it’s the greatest, but no one had mentioned it yet, and this thread could be a great reference for anyone in the future. No pun intended.
