Karlos_Cantana, in What aspects are important for non-centralized communities?
@Karlos_Cantana@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s a constant fight. I grew up in a village. In the 1980s the neighboring city wanted to annex it. The villagers fought against it for about 25 years. Eventually the neighboring city had a vote. All the citizens of that city were able to vote on whether to annex the village. The city ran a campaign saying how good it would be for the people in the village. Obviously the annexing happened because the villagers couldn’t fight it.

That’s just one example, but it applies to every small, non centralized entity. If a government or a large corporation wants to take it over, it can and will. The one thing digital entities have over other things is space. If someone does take over Lemmy, for example, then the people of Lemmy have the ability to move somewhere else in digital space, unlike the villagers who didn’t all possess the ability to leave their land.

justhach, in Those of you with lesser-known types of jobs...what do you do?
@justhach@lemmy.world avatar

I dont know if its really “Lesser Known”, but pest control is a very interesting field to work in and isnt often talked about in many circles.

Its essentially future proof, as we’re always going to have pests. Its one of those jobs where its the same enough every day that you get a little better, but different enough from call to call to keep you challenged and stay interested.

I wished that I had even considered it an open back in High School and gone to college/university to actually study pests in an academic setting, and be able to participate in some of the groundbreaking work taking place currently.

smashboy,

Has it ever happened that you accidentally took some pests (like bed bugs or cockroaches) home in your clothes or bag and infected your own home with it?

justhach, (edited )
@justhach@lemmy.world avatar

Nah. I mean, it can happen, and really only with bedbugs, but only if you’re not careful.

Roaches have no interest in being on your person, so.its not like they’re going to hitch a ride home with you. If I were to, say, take home a cardboard box from a heavily infested unit, then maybe (they loooove corrugated boxes), but that fall under “not careful”.

Bed bugs are pretty much the same. I mean, if you give a bear hug to a mattress that is heavily infested, then there is a chance that one could make it onto you and you bring it home, but theyre actually not that great at holding on (they are not like ticks where they latch on).

My only precaution is an ocular patdown of myself when I leave a unit, and as soon as I get home, my uniform goes into the dryer on High for 40 minutes to kill anything in the off chance I brought a bed bug or an egg home with me.

BowserBasher, in What game do you play to just chill?

Animal Crossing. I still play NH for 15 minutes a day just to go round my island and see what’s happening. My island is pretty much how I want it and I have collected nearly everything I want, but to take 20 minutes out the day just to walk around catch a bug or two and talk to an islander is a great way to relax.

RegalPotoo, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

I backed the Pebble Core Kickstarter (kickstarter.com/…/pebble-2-time-2-and-core-an-ent…) - never actually happened cos Pebble ran out of cash before they shipped any, but I’ve always thought the idea was really interesting

FireTower, in What aspects are important for non-centralized communities?
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

One aspect I think Lemmy lacks is the ability for some contained discussion. To much leads to feed back loops but not enough discourages niche communities.

This is something Reddit’s scale does well. Reddit communities will have most of their posts never make it to the 5th page of All. There will still be break out posts but most likely the only people reading your post are those in your community.

With the current size of most niche lemmy communities you are posting to thise in your community as much as you’re posting to who ever is viewing All by new.

Terraria. I started a new character/world probably 200 times. Music is also bang on.

Not a long or super replayable game like some of these answers but Jusant is super chill.

cyberpunk007, in What game do you play to just chill?

Witcher 3, I love riding roach around and exploring and listening to the music. I like cruising in cyberpunk 2077 listening to the radio stations. There’s also spiritifarer.

Evotech, (edited ) in What game do you play to just chill?

Path of exile for a few weeks every league

But I’m enjoying rogue lites / vampire survivors like games. There’s a billion of them so you can just chill with one of them. I usually find a new one every other day too, some demo or whatever

Risk of rain 2 is also not something I would call a chill game. But it’s definitely something you can just fire up and play for an hour

slazer2au, in Who is the cruelest fictional villain?

C’Tan from 40K

Causes the Necrons to be a short lived race because the C’Tan living in their sun. A series of wars happen and the C’Tan is like “oh hi, we can make you ‘immortal’”

Turns the civilisation of Necrons into the slave machine race we know in 40K

Geek_King,

The worst part was, the C’tan which ended up being known as The Deceiver convinced them that they could make the Necrontyr immortal, fixing their cancer ridden short lives, and aid them in their war against the Old ones. This was accomplished by a process called bio-transference using the bio furnaces. As the Necrontyr either willingly or unwillingly lined up to burn up their bodes in the furnaces, the C’tan could be seen above the bio furnaces gorging on the souls of the Necrontyr burning.

Yeah, fuck those things.

LegionEris, in What game do you play to just chill?

I guess whatever Kairosoft sim game I’m playing at the moment. Right now that’s Tropical Resort Story. I am entirely addicted to their formula. I love watching my little guys do things and helping them succeed.

Or maybe Shadow of the Colossus. It’s the game I know better than any other. I’ll never not be able to jump into at least normal difficulty. And I can just ride around the Forbidden Lands having thoughts and feelings for hours sometimes. The Forbidden Lands are a very placid, pensive place for me. I have known them since I was a teenager, for nearly 20 years. And occasionally I can tackle a Colossus or two.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in Why does lemmy seem better for engagement and conversation then (I meant than) Mastodon

I don’t know, but I’m about a year into Mastodon and haven’t found a single person to follow and interact with on a regular basis. I signed up during the surge so they specifically told me to go for the masto.a1 instance because it was the only one not overloaded, and I can see why. Currently I use my profile there as a kind of quasi-storage, as it’s not like it doesn’t work.

rob299,

if you like anime you can try Sakurajima.moe, the staff and users on that particular instance are conversaters.

shinigamiookamiryuu,

Do I have to re-register to get into it?

rob299,

if it’s a different instance.

Bebo,

You can migrate from your old instance to a new one

shinigamiookamiryuu,

How does one do that on here?

Bebo,

To clarify, I was talking about migration on Mastodon. There isn’t a migration option on lemmy yet. I have heard that migration function on lemmy is on the pipeline, though not sure exactly what it would entail (as in whether posts and comments would be migrated or not, since on Mastodon you can migrate with only your followers as far as I know).

satanmat, in Who is the cruelest fictional villain?

Big Brother.

The paranoia of everyone being on the watch for everything forcing everyone to be even more paranoid

Zorque,

It was even more insidious than that. It wasn't about self-preservation or selfish need... they were so brainwashed they considered it good to tell on others as a matter of course. One of the secondary characters is even proud of his own children for turning him in for talking in his sleep.
