Being told, by my classmates, that the tooth fairy isn’t real with me fervently claiming otherwise. Thanks a lot mom and dad, you were too convincing.

Everything is exploited. Shady fraudsters and “hackers” know what’s good and why, and that’s why they tend to use them.

wondering if we can even survive as a society

I took a bit of liberty with that quote. Privacy or no privacy, humanity is absolutely fucked.

DannyMac, in Why create an instance if you are not ready to post in it?
@DannyMac@lemmy.world avatar

Do you mean communities? An instance is a server, like lemmy.world or lemmy.today.

If so, yes, I see interesting trending communities and once I go there, it’s empty. At least say hi or something, people!

somafm.com

A good selection of internet radio stations that has been around for many many years

makyo,

Good opportunity to specifically recommend radioparadise.com - been supporting them for a very, very long time.

Are you thinking about a community? Because instance doesn’t really need posts, it can be purely a user instance with no communities. If you mean a community, then yeah, it happens for various reasons:

  • people think they can attract people to it, turns out they can’t
  • people sit on good community names to be part of the mod team in case someone wants to pick it up
  • personal problems causing people to have less time to moderate
  • possibly many more reasons

As an adult, I thought of learning the bagpipes. Just to annoy the neighbors.

My childhood dream was playing the organ. But anything like that was financially far out of reach back then.

I’d love to learn the harp, it’s such a beautiful instrument. I gotta get back in practice on my drums first though

A dizi (chinese flute). I got two of them at home but never managed to get any good at playing.
Like most hobbies in my life, it’s something I get super excited about for a weekend and then completely drop again for half a year or so.

I want to play the accordian. I just don’t want to pay for an accordian.

Rhynoplaz,

My daughter got a mini accordion for cheap online. It was at least good enough to see if you enjoy it enough for a real one.

HelixDab2, in Is there such a thing as too much privacy?

have almost always been used by bad actors that ruin it for everyone else.

…So what? You’re suggesting that, because some people misuse a right in an illegal way, that the right should be taken from everyone. It’s the equivalent of saying that because some people use speech to incite violence, the right to free speech should be taken. I completely reject that view.

ElPussyKangaroo,

You’re suggesting that, because some people misuse a right in an illegal way, that the right should be taken from everyone.

I’m not. I’m asking how we can navigate this conundrum in order to reach a common ground where we do NOT have to give up our precious privacy in exchange for security.

I’m sorry if my post didn’t reflect this. I’ll update it.

That’s easy. You tell the people who want you to give up your right to privacy to go fuck themselves. The common ground is when they go fuck themselves, problem solved.

ElPussyKangaroo,

That’s great in an ideal world, but it’s not realistic. 😅

seaQueue,
@seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

It’s equally unrealistic to give up all of your privacy in the name of security. Not everything can be a compromise, the opponent will fight with everything they have to take your right to privacy, if you want any privacy at all you need to fight every attempt.

When you give up your privacy in the name of security you end up with neither.

zout, in What are some modern bullshit jobs?

Any job can be a bullshit job actually. But for me:

  • People who seem to be on Linkedin most of the day, looking for leads "lets get a cup of coffee together".
  • Corporate communications.
  • People who's job consists mostly of copying data from one excel sheet to the next.
  • Government consultants, especially in IT (but not limited to IT only)
agressivelyPassive,

“Consultant” in IT is often enough a fancier sounding title for “rentable body”. You’re basically working as a contractor of some sort, but officially you’re a consultant.
