Treczoks,

Easy solution to be clean with the law for international companies: Just geoblock Canada.

Treczoks, (edited )

Freshly certified like Staplerfahrer Klaus?

For those who don't understand the language: This is the parody of an officially sponsored training/education film. The speaker is a well-known voice for a series of traffic safety videos that were shown weekly on TV in the 70s. It starts with the ceremony of handing out the forklift operator certificates, and then follows one of those nwly minted forklift operators, describing things one should not do around or with forklifts.

This so much needs English subtitles...

Treczoks,

The article just describes the how, but gives no reasons for a why.

So, why would anyone move away from the de-facto standard bash, except for some rare circumstances like having a small system and using busybox?

Treczoks,

I worked with Unix before Windows was a thing. I've worked on windows, saw what a shitshot it was (and still is), and work with Linux instead. I do have Windows PCs at the lab for some renitent software, too, but it is always a step backwards when it comes to data procession.

Treczoks,

Only those who didn't sleep during math.

Treczoks,

If the other parties get their acts together, the PVV seats will not matter.

Treczoks,

According to the data sheet, it has 17400RPM, which is 290RPS, times 11 fan blades (if I counted correctly), so it would probably run with a 3190Hz sound. The noise is actually not that loud, given as 25dB(A) at 30cm.

While it is not overly loud, a proper case design that alleviates the annoying frequency by filtering it would be a good idea.

Treczoks,

Well, it more depends on the overall spectrum - and a good sound designer. I've seen miracles done with air vents filtering out frequency ranges, but that's some voodoo level stuff in my eyes.

Low effort posts

Ask Lemmy is a place to ask thought provoking questions. The mods have been lenient with some of the recent posts on the basis that they must provoke thought for some people, but after seeing two posts essentially saying “what do you think of my stick?”, I believe we can raise the bar a bit on what kind of thoughts we want...

Treczoks,

Prerequisite: you == The asklemmy community

Well, you got what you asked for. As one is not allowed to ask real questions here, you get the "thought provoking questions" you wanted. No sympathy or pity from my side for wasting a good community name for a socio-psychological experiment.

Treczoks,

More like a disconnect between the moderators and reality.

Treczoks,

Look at the charter. This group is not for asking real questions, as in "Does anyone know..." or "How do I...", but for "though provoking" discussion starters. A bit like r/showerthoughts on reddit was. For that, a name like "asklemmy" is wasted.

Treczoks,

Well, it was way more interesting than the usual stuff here. So much about "thought provoking".

Treczoks,

People don’t seem to get that this one is similar to AskReddit in purpose

Which does not make it anny better. Is there no better name for a group that is not about answering questions?

Treczoks,

Wouldn't the charter not be more appropriate for a "DiscussOnLemmy" group? And leave "AskLemmy" for proper, answerable questions? That mistake was made on reddit before.

Treczoks,

There should be a community for both, but it should not be named "AskLemmy".

Treczoks,

And I'm waiting until bcachefs has sufficiently spread so I can see whether it really works or not.

Treczoks,

Why not just go to sources that don't have a real leaning? OK, they are hard to find, but they still do exist. Try the BBC for an English-speaking source, or ARD and ZDF in German.

Treczoks,

Depends. I do most documents in Arial and Times New Roman, as they are two of the best in legibility.

I also use DroidFonts, and some TeX-Fonts.

I just found Monaspace and I think I'll give it a try (it is a monospace font family that does not look that much "monospacy")

I made it to Linux! What is your must-have FOSS or Free Software for linux?

Thank you so much, comrades! I am feeling pretty comfortable with linux mint, and now would like some suggestions for some absolutely necessary FOSS or free license software for the OS. So far I have the standard, Firefox, ThunderBird, LibreOffice, yada yada. Thank you again to everyone on the linux comm! sankara-salute

Treczoks,

Inkscape for drawing vector images.

Loads of command line tools to process PDF files, like extracting images or text.

All those tools for automated processing of data, including script languages like perl.

The MediaWiki engine that allows me to run a local wiki at home for my hobby.

Treczoks,

As an adult, I thought of learning the bagpipes. Just to annoy the neighbors.

My childhood dream was playing the organ. But anything like that was financially far out of reach back then.
