DharmaCurious, in what is a parental advice you wish you could give to your father/mother before they had you?
@DharmaCurious@startrek.website avatar

I know you have my life mapped out, because as someone who desperately wants kids, it’s impossible not to do that. But don’t assume a kid is going to follow that plan. Some kids are gay. You both handled that news really, really well, but for real, why did you have to assume I was straight to begin with? I wish I could have told you when I was 14, but I had to deal with not being the thing you thought I was. As a result, I’m 32 and still don’t have kids, because I got a really late start on the whole dating someone thing, and I’ve still never brought anyone home. It’s not your fault, but next go round, try not to box your kids the way you were boxed in.

Also, Mama. Leave his ass. Do not marry him. It doesn’t matter how upset Grandmama will be, she’ll get over it. Just tell her you love her, and go raise that baby alone.

TJDetweiler, in If you got COVID and lost the ability to taste things, did it ever come back? Otherwise, did you experience any other long term consequences from the pandemic in general?

Got covid at least 3 times, maybe more. All 3 were pretty minor. Was pretty much couch ridden for 5 days during one of the illnesses, but could still talk and cook and clean and whatever. It was just hard. The other 2 could have been mistaken for minor colds.

Other than that, no long term effects. My girlfriend also had it and she states her eyesight has taken a nosedive since. Possibly related, possibly not.

I’ve got the first 2 mandatory (for work) vaccines in Canada, but nothing since.

NerdyPopRocks, in Have you ever failed at something? How did you get back up after that?

I don’t usually get back up, I just go somewhere else or do something else where the novelty makes me feel like I haven’t failed yet. Weirdly, I got pretty good at things over time doing this and I fail a lot less

Catoblepas, in what is a parental advice you wish you could give to your father/mother before they had you?

Lay off the legal and illegal drugs, seriously. No, hiding them in a drawer isn’t baby proofing.

Children’s medications aren’t scams, they have different doses for a reason (the reason is usually risk of overdose).

Yelling and beating a child isn’t discipline and the southern Baptist church is a terrible place to take kids.

I worked through a lot of this in therapy, but it still annoys me that I had better risk management in my teens than my parents did in their 30s.

papalonian,

Children’s medications aren’t scams, they have different doses for a reason (the reason is usually risk of overdose).

This will obviously very from med to med, but most stuff over the counter will be exactly the same for adults and children, just with instructions for children to take less.

For example, both children’s and adult’s liquid acetaminophen (paracetamol) are sold in the US at a strength of 160mg/5mL, and they will both have the same instructions for children under 2, children 2-11, and people 12+

I could write a novel here honestly but I’ll keep it a bit brief:

Don’t ask your toddler which parent they’ll go with if you 2 get a divorce. If you don’t love your partner you should get a divorce. Joint custody is a thing.

Don’t “stay together for the kids” you will only cause them more mental harm in the long run.

Don’t make your young children have to be the most mature person in the room. They should be allowed to be a kid.

Be at least somewhat involved in your kids lives, if you’re not don’t be surprised when they don’t choose to involve you in their lives as they get older.

200ok,

This resonates 💔

xc2215x, in Why are there so many apps that could be websites?

They can make money off the downloads I would think.

ilinamorato,

Unless they’re charging for the app (and if it’s just a webview probably not), it actually costs them money to be on the App Store or the Play Store.

conciselyverbose, in what is a parental advice you wish you could give to your father/mother before they had you?

Throw a couple Apple shares in a college fund for me.

JungleJim,

Yay yours isn’t sad!

JackLSauce, in Why are there so many apps that could be websites?

I worked at a company that wanted to kill their app (just a web view for the site anyway) but trying to convince all the users to move proved unfeasible

I suppose having a dedicated “launch this website” button has some level of convenience over typing out the URL

xkforce,

Someone needs to teach these people how to make a button on their phone that is linked to a bookmark

havocpants,

I’ve just gone through this pain with my company. It took 14 months to finally get rid of the app and the pushback from users was horrendous.

We eventually broke the app to the point that all it did in the end was show a page that made users open the site in their mobile browser and use the “Add to home page” feature present in mobile Safari, Chrome and Firefox to put an icon on the homepage like an app.

Absolutely worth it though to not have to deal with Apple’s developer hostile and shitty app tools/ecosystem while paying for the privilege. I don’t miss having to deal with the “moving target” nature of Android and iOS either where everything breaks or has a new API every 5 minutes. Mobile browsers are so capable now with javascript APIs to access most of the device hardware so apps really aren’t as necessary as they once were.

Be kind, be patient, and understand that getting violent and aggressive your child isn’t discipline or parenting, it’s just abuse.

Don’t tell me to mindfuck bullies cuz they’re dumb as fuck and didn’t understand anything I said, but continued to beat me up!

Rhynoplaz,

Right? Intelligence only works on the intelligent. Ass kickings work on EVERYONE.

This is something a nerd that gets beat up would say 🤣

Exactly.

I settled the problem the old fashioned way, the didn’t bother me any more once I put up a fight.

Just break up already. Creating a tiny extra human is not going to magically fix all of your issues.

… of course that would create a paradox in which I was never born, hence not able to give her that advice … but seriously, the only reason I exist is because my mother didn’t want my dad to leave her, which is simply a shitty reason to become pregnant.

  • TonyOstrich,

I should have been a blow job!

acetanilide, in If you got COVID and lost the ability to taste things, did it ever come back? Otherwise, did you experience any other long term consequences from the pandemic in general?

I never lost taste/smell. But, I lost everything else. I can’t work anymore because of covid. It fucked me in the worst way. I’m an American and our disability system is fucked too. So I’ve been without pay for 2 years. I’m out of money. I don’t know what to do tbh.

    Bazoogle,

I can’t work anymore because of covid

Why can’t you work anymore because of covid? Do you have a weakened immune system so you can’t risk being exposed to covid, or did you get covid and now have long covid symptoms? If it’s the second one, what long covid symptoms are preventing you from working? I believe you, but it’s just so vague that I’m not sure what you’re referencing

    acetanilide,

    Thanks for asking.

It’s actually both. I have some other health issues, so it’s not just the long covid, but covid was the last straw. From covid alone, I have heart issues, lung issues, GI issues, brain fog, extreme fatigue. And because of the heart issues, i currently cannot take any adhd meds, so my concentration is shit. I also experienced medical trauma during this time, so i have a bunch of mental health issues now too.

Basically, there is no part of my body that hasn’t been affected by covid. It is a terrible disease that i wouldn’t wish on anyone.

And yes, i am vaccinated and boosted, which i think is the only reason i didn’t die.

Validate your child’s feelings. Let them know that you understand that they are scared and that it is ok to be scared.

Stoneykins, in Why are there so many apps that could be websites?

Some people are missing the forest for the trees here

Having a businesses app on your phone is better regular advertising than anything they could ever pay for.

They just want an excuse to make you look at their logo and think about their business as regularly as possible

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

Lemmy has a real problem with this. It’s like all of the angry people from Reddit came here and now we just have an angry circlejerk about anything the crowd doesn’t like.

    This is true

people tend to develop liking or disliking for things merely because they are familiar with them

and it’s amazing that basic psychological principles have been decoupled from mainstream awareness of marketing tactics (obviously intentionally).

    Waffelson,

This is not a problem with the olauncher

    Hadriscus,

    Thanks I’m trying that
