sramder, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?

Going with 47 and six-ish months… no reason 😅

HonoraryMancunian,

Ok grandad

Bluetreefrog, in Just an idea to make the Fediverse better, what do you think about it?

Wrong community. OP, please repost in !fediverse

NegentropicBoy, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?

As late as possible.

On the other hand, right now.

frefi, (edited ) in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?
@frefi@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

imo I don’t think there is any food item costs less than it should

edit: I’m speaking as a person who is broke and I buy microwave meals because I don’t have time, money or energy to make/eat other stuff

otp,

I would argue that that’s because you should be paid more money. That’s why I’m not suggesting we should be paying more. Just kind of wondering what foods are “artificially” priced low due to exploitation of labour (etc).

Vanth, in What is it that makes a grand piano sound better than an upright piano?
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

The size. Longer pianos, upright < baby grand < concert grand allow for longer strings and larger vibrating surfaces, meaning richer sounds and less opportunity for undesirable harmonics.

Grands also have more space for better mechanical apparatus from the keys to the hammers striking the strings.

And a grand having the cabinet with strings and sounding boards open to the audience sounds better than an upright sending sound into a wall.

PP_BOY_, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Rice. A 20lb bag can provide 70% of your food volume for a month and costs like $10. Easily the best poverty food hack there is.

otp,

We can’t grow rice in Canada, so that definitely applies to us! Still cheap here, though.

haggyg, (edited ) in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

Always thought garlic bread is such a steal. Often you can get 2 (small) baguettes for less than £1 and G Bread is so good. When my plans of world domination come in, free garlic bread for everyone is first on the agenda.

otp,

I’m not sure if world domination usually comes with an election, but I’d vote for you!

Chainweasel, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

Snack cakes. Do you want to know why America has an obesity epidemic?
Because a whole box of Swiss cake rolls is $2.50 at Walmart and a deli salad is $5.00.

otp,

It’s not much different in Canada. I strongly dislike all the HFCS-sweetened stuff.

BoxerDevil, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?

Take it when I’m 18 and I will have never been born

HonoraryMancunian,

You’ll have 2 years in Minusland…

Minusland is a dark, gloomy region far beneath the surface of the Earth, filled up entirely with fog, and inhabited only by the invisible and highly dangerous Gnoolies, creatures which, with a single bite, turn their victims into more Gnoolies

bluebadoo, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

I would argue that of the three items you listed (bananas, coffee, chocolate) that the main reason those items are “cheap” is exploitation of the workers and economies of the global south.

…jstor.org/fruit-geopeelitics-americas-banana-rep…

This is just one popular science article on the topic, and it just brushes the surface of how colonial politics have stripped the global south of resources while simultaneously building capital in the global north.

This single pane comic is the jist of it. A map of the world with Africa excavated and gold piled atop Europe and North America.

shinigamiookamiryuu,

What about Asia? Are we forgetting Africa is China’s China right now?

novibe,

If China does to Africa what they did to themselves, that would be awesome!

Cagi,

Enslaving and killing ethnic groups en masse, creating a surveillance police state, imprisoning people for criticizing the government, making their people work in sweat shops to rule and manipulate global manufacturing, collecting personal information on every person on earth, militarily and financially supporting the worst despots on the planet?

bizzle,
@bizzle@lemmy.world avatar

People don’t ever seem to want to talk about demographics in China, I can’t figure out why 🤔 maybe the fact that it’s an ethnostate…

novibe, (edited )

Why are you talking about the US? And literally what the Europeans did to Africa for centuries.

Cagi,

Yes, both are terrible. Africa should be run by Africans.

novibe,

And that’s exactly what China does? They don’t do unilateral trade agreements. They don’t impose their policies on countries they make deals with. They are equal partners. Which is why most countries in Africa prefer China as a partner than the US or EU nowadays…

shinigamiookamiryuu,
bluebadoo,

100%. Exploitation is not limited to one continent or group of people.

“This Jacobo, he’s making us pay minimum wages!.. and that’s not all, he’s taking our unused land and giving it back to the people! Does that sound familiar?”

otp,

Without a doubt. And when it’s things that can only grow in those parts of the world, it can be harder to find alternatives.

Not that I can afford them, lol

Rolder,

Hold up. We exploit South America pretty hard too.

bluebadoo,

Absolutely, the comic was from a piece on Imperialism from Europe in Africa, but a more comprehensive one would show the entire global south dug up.

TheControlled,

China is currently colonizing Africa and SE Asia as well.

themeatbridge, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?

I’m 42. Does everyone get a pill? My wife? My kids? My parents?

Jumping back 20 years puts me out of sync with everyone I care about. I’m not sure I’d even want it.

Bakachu,

That’s a good point. You kinda lose your kids once you take the pill. On the flip side though, who’s putting who in the nursing home now?

gears,

Why do you lose your kids? You could still be there

Bakachu,

I think there’s a certain power dynamic that comes with looking and acting older. If you look the same age or younger than your kids, that power dynamic is most likely going to slowly shift. It’d be like if you’re in your 40s working for a guy who looks like he’s in his 20s. While possible, I imagine it’d be a challenging arrangement. Not to mention how your kids would feel about your decision as a parent to take an age reversal pill.

partial_accumen,

Out-of-sync not only in lifestyle but you’d now be young enough to possibly outlive your loved ones. Thats a special hell, I’d imagine, burying your parents, wife, and children all because you took a pill to make you younger.

roofuskit, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?
@roofuskit@lemmy.world avatar

Coffee and Chocolate for sure. Their prices rely really heavily on slavery or something so very near it you’re splitting hairs by drawing a line.

otp,

And even then, with chocolate, costs are rising. You can tell by how prevalent things like “chocolatey chips” are.

We’ve gotten too used to having cheap coffee and chocolate, and I’m disappointed with the substitutes…too bad I can’t afford the ethical stuff quite yet, lol

Kit, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

Ramen always surprises me by how it remains consistently cheap

otp,

And I’m thankful for it!

It kind of makes sense though. Pasta is cheap too. Most ramen packs are less noodles than you’d get in a bag of pasta, but with a bit of packaged salt/seasoning mix. It can also be manufactured anywhere with stuff that grows locally (at least where I am).

Lifecoach5000, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

I was told food is expensive now.

otp,

Bananas are still cheap, though!

BloodSlut, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

beef, corn, and almonds

beef takes up an incredible amount of land and water per ‘unit’ nutrition and has a profound impact on the local and global environment. it has an artificially low cost due to subsidies and cheap grain (corn) feed.

feed corn isnt really consumable by humans and takes a large percentage of land. its price is kept low by subsidies.

almonds take a lot of water to grow and are commonly grown in regions where water is scarce and is provided to farmers for little to no monetary cost with few restrictions

marx2k,

Where are you that almonds are cheap?

BloodSlut,

i never said they were, lol
