puppy, in Where do you go for gaming news?

IGN for trailers. Gamer Nexus for hardware related things and benchmarks.

Mamertine, in How long is a wound considered open?

Normal activities for a paper cut? I’d you don’t have a compromised immune system, Live your life once you’re done bleeding. Exceptions for sticking your hand in raw sewage.

Nemo, (edited ) in What hobbies help you minimize or avoid navigating commercialism?
  • home cooking
  • sewing and making your own clothes
  • cycling
  • composing poetry
  • ethical philosophy
  • social dance
  • programming indie videogames
  • letter-writing
  • calligraphy, though this is borderline, as you can spend literally any amount of money on fancy pens and nice paper

Edit to add:

  • carpentry
  • hunting and fishing
  • volunteering
  • graffiti
triclops6,

Fountain pen user here, can confirm. Ink is a factor as well.

whome, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

I have a Garmin viomove hybrid, I use it to count steps, count my swimming and see how much I sleep. I wouldn’t want a smarter watch out of trust issues. Battery life still sucks 3-4 days but the analog watch works if the smart watch part is dead.

lietuva, in What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

its very easy to dehydrate when youre sick, especially if you have diarrhea. Basically your body trying to flush out whatever is irritating you. Most electrolyte packs from pharmacy have glucose added. Glucose is very easily digested and provides energy source when your DI is not working. Also most doctors recommend to drink coke, since its full of sugar and has acidic pH which is bad for viruses. toasted bread also works, easily digestible and doesnt iritate

turbowafflz, in is freeBSD resistant to o.mg cable and rubber ducky usb?

Any operating system that supports a usb keyboard is vulnerable. In theory maybe you could limit the vulnerability by blocking all but one keyboard but I don’t know of anything that does that

lemann,

Pretty much this.

They behave like standard HID devices unless they’re scripted to emulate something else, like say a network interface… not really a feasible thing to fullt mitigate, and probably not worth worrying about IMO unless you’re a bank or something

mr_tyler_durden, in How would you go about a low maintenance personal website today?

Wordpress. Or some other hosted blog/cms.

Yes you can go crazy with SSGs or write your own site but especially if it’s rare that you will blog/update then it’s way better to just use something off the shelf. That’s what I’d do as a software developer. Heck I paid for a static site with a simple web UI to update it just last week to serve as the marketing site for my software product (that I wrote from scratch).

Unless you enjoy tinkering and know programming I would shy away from the SSGs. I used them for years and now I self-host Ghost and even that I’m considering just paying someone else to do since it’s not how I want to spend my time (maintaining it).

weeeeum, in What are some green flags in a partner in your opinion?

I definitely agree with the hobby bit. I’ve talked to plenty of people that don’t have any hobbies or any passion for anything and they are just so soul draining to be around. I find with these folks you cannot have a good conversation with, either they don’t know about the topic, or any topic or they only answer in one or two word responses. They are just a black hole of any excitement or energy.

dmention7,

Ugh, this one hurts to read. I have plenty of hobbies and interests, but for whatever reason it feels so painful and awkward to discuss them with people i’m not already decently acquainted with, so it probably comes across as you describe to many folks.

weeeeum,

Probably not, to be like the people I mentioned and met you almost have to try to be as disinterested as possible. If you say more than just 1 or 2 words when talking to somebody you’re already a lot better.

them, in How would you go about a low maintenance personal website today?

Really depends what you want to create but there’s nothing wrong with just writing html and css. They’re as portable as you can get.

If you’re planning to do a lot of editing/posting then a static site genarator would be the next best thing as again you just end up with html and css which can be hosted anywhere. The generator can run on your system. Most are powered by markdown files so the content can (with little work) be migrated to another generator.

Beyond this you’re starting to get in to cms or other complex systems which i think is out of the scope of your question.

doublenut, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

No

aaaa, (edited ) in How would you explain Lemmy/Kbin to a Reddit person or to a social media person?

Consider your specific audience you are reaching out to.

Honestly the biggest barrier for entry into the Lemmy content isn’t choosing an instance. You can easily tell someone to sign up for Lemmy.world or kbin.social without going into detail about what that means.

The issue is that most social media users don’t want to spend an hour or two searching for communities and blocking bots. They want a feed that is appealing at first, that they can tweak incrementally as they get more familiar with the service and its content.

With that in mind, what people want is to know what makes the experience helpful to them right now. I think that boils down to two primary concepts: Draw people in to specific communities that are more accessible than their Reddit counterparts, or convince them why Reddit is not a good experience for them

The latter is a tough sell to someone who already is happy with the Reddit experience. And the trouble with the former is there’s currently not a great deal of communities that are clearly better than on Reddit. The few that I would say count are fairly niche interests.

I think the Lemmy and kbin software needs a set of default subscriptions for guests and new users. Something curated by instance admins to provide the best new user experience, while still allowing them to customize it from there.

For what it’s worth, I would expect most social media users not to care about any of the decentralization aspects. Putting too much focus on the “it’s like email” thing is likely to fall on deaf ears at first.

monsterlynn, in What's a food you forget you like? Then you eat it, and wonder why you don't buy it more often?
@monsterlynn@kbin.social avatar

@IonAddis honeydew melon.

vaionko, in People of Lemmy that take more than 5 seconds to start your car and drive, what are you doing?

Brushing off the snow and scraping off the ice from my windows

cmgvd3lw, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

Smart watches and privacy don’t go hand in hand. Also dont want to own another product that i need to worry about charging. But if i am going to buy one ever, it would be garmin. I heard pretty good things about it here in europe.

miss_brainfart,
@miss_brainfart@lemmy.ml avatar

Idk, the Garmin Connect App is also not great in terms of privacy. And so far, only one Garmin product works with Gadgetbridge

cmgvd3lw,

But i think mozilla put them in their good list

miss_brainfart,
@miss_brainfart@lemmy.ml avatar

True, I’ve just checked up on that. The devices themselves don’t do anything creepy, but the app contains a few trackers according to Exodus Privacy, which is not ideal if you want to use everything to its full extent

Floey, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

I go old school and rock a pocket watch (my cellphone).

INHALE_VEGETABLES,

Kids today need to look the fuck up.

Is there a sun in the sky? Yes, well get back to work. No? Then shut up.
