I read the news. Feedly rss reader which opens the articles directly into Firefox with no script, ublock and bypass paywalls add-ons. Very easy to concentrate on the article content when there are no nags or ads on the screen.

Little Busters!

hperrin, (edited ) in How Many Streaming Services Do You Have?

I’ve gotten it down to just Hulu, Nebula, and Dropout. Everything else from everywhere else I pirate. I’m getting rid of Hulu next.

I also technically have Prime Video, but that’s because they force me to have it, even though I just want Prime shipping.

ramsgrl909,

How is Dropout?

hperrin,

I love it. It’s my go to if I’m bored sitting on the couch. They’ve got a lot of great shows like Game Changer, Make Some Noise, and this new one called Very Important People. If you’re into D&D, there’s Dimension 20. I’m not a big fan of it, but it’s one of, if not the, most popular shows on there.

The majority are on TikTok, instagram, Facebook, YouTube and X. Probably Tinder and Hinge after those.

Nastybutler,

Yup. The people I work with are mostly 20 to 30 years old and they are predominantly on TikTok, Insta and YouTube

From my observations: Normal people don’t look at their phone; they listen to it.

If you’re expecting normal people to answer: Do you even know where you are right now? :p

sarcasticsunrise,

That’s something I never even thought of, but damn that’s accurate. Living in a big ol city, sometimes use public transit - yeah this is totally the case

Just Nebula. I do admittedly rent movies from YouTube from time to time as a sort of special thing to do with my friend (a bit less than once a month I think, I don’t think I watch them often enough to justify any kind of subscription to them, which probably wouldn’t have all the ones I end up wanting to see anyway, and since at the current pace it might be years before I rewatch something if ever I don’t think buying is really worth it either in my case), but on the whole, I just have kind of given up watching “normal” TV anymore. There are a handful of shows I liked watching when living with some family that had the subscription, but there’s not nearly enough entertainment in just one show or two for me to want to bother buying a subscription to any of them myself, and I’ve sort of found that except for only one or two shows I get more enjoyment per unit time out of content made by individuals or small teams anyway, I’m not really sure why, maybe because it can be more niche or something.

That isn’t to say that I don’t spend any money, beyond that one subscription that is, on entertainment or anything, I just generally spend it on games. (And since I like games with thousand hours or more levels or replayability, usually buy them or any dlc on sales, and don’t play games with mtx much and never buy any if I do, the amount of entertainment hours per dollar I get there is rather extremely high I suspect).

Nemo, in What do normal people look at on their phones?

I am the wrong person to ask about this, but I read ebooks, play games, go on fora.

My wife cruises Facebook marketplace and other similar sites and buys furniture which she then resells at a profit. But I doubt that’s very common either.

cmnybo, in What do normal people look at on their phones?

My phone has an FM tuner, so I usually listen to local radio stations. Sometimes I watch TV shows or movies I downloaded on the SD card, but I prefer watching videos on a larger screen when possible. Cell service is crap around here, so streaming is not very practical.

Sexy Commando

hogmomma, in Good “Buy for Life” Brands

Dyson vacuum cleaners. I’ve had mine for about 20 years, had to replace a part here and there, but it’s just as strong as the day I got it. Probably the single best purchase I’ve ever made. A close second would be my Sonicare toothbrush.

HessiaNerd,

I’ve got a Kirby that was my grandmother’s. The thing is solid metal and weighs a ton but I don’t think it I’ll ever die.

hogmomma,

I “sold” Kirbies for a short time. Super-glamorous job (haha).

derpgon,

If only they weren’t so fucking ugly

hogmomma,

That’s part of their charm! I’ve always thought mine looked pretty badass. 🙂

Bombastion,

Surprisingly, yes to both of these. I was just commenting on how long my Dyson vacuum has lasted a couple days ago.

dillydogg,

Dyson is a marketing company that happens to make okay vacuums. Anyone who owns a Miele or SEBO vacuum would never go to a Dyson. Dyson vacuums never hold up to their high quality bagged competitors in almost any regard. Just my 2c. I used my family’s Dyson before moving out and buying a canister SEBO and the difference is remarkable. nytimes.com/…/what-we-learned-from-vacuum-enthusi…

hogmomma,

Why’d you yuck my yum? :)

BenVimes, in How Many Streaming Services Do You Have?

Between my wife and me, we have Netflix, Prime, Disney+, Curiosity, DropOut, and Nebula for videos. I also have one paid Twitch subscription. We could probably stand to cancel one or two.

For music, I have Spotify and my wife has YouTube Music. We have different preferences in sorting and recommendations, and at this point either of us migrating to the other’s preferred service would be more work than it’s probably worth.

SpaceNoodle, in What do normal people look at on their phones?

I replaced it with Lemmy, so that’s what an abnormal person does.

reversebananimals, in What do normal people look at on their phones?

I ride the public bus every day, and I can tell you its basically all social media, messaging, YouTube and phone/video calls.

But you don’t have to do the same thing everyone else does. You can play digital card games, chess, read a book, or put your phone in your pocket and listen to podcasts or music. And if you’re not commuting, you can plug your phone in and do actual stuff.

I can’t claim to represent anyone other than myself. I use an RSS feeder for news, articles, and webcomics. I have some ebooks from the library downloaded. I have been playing an MMO phone game for the last ~year and check on that a couple times a day. Discord. Lemmy has replaced reddit for me but I don’t spend as much time on it as I used to on reddit.

200ok,

What RSS reader do you use?

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

Feedly. I’ve looked around for alts, especially when Feedly started embedding sponsored articles amongst my subscriptions, but haven’t found anything I like better.

200ok,

Thank you!
