It’s my favorite film! But I understand it’s not an easy first watch.
It took me years to go back to it. I was taking a class in film narrative and remembered that weird movie I had seen years ago and suddenly I started getting the plot (what little I remembered).
I rewatched it and I was mind blown. There’s a reason it’s considered one of the biggest achievements in film.
I don’t like to smuggly say “it’s not for everyone”. But I’ll say it again, it’s not an easy watch at all. Hardly uncommon for David Lynch. The first time I watched it I didn’t understand what had happened but I always had this calling “there’s something there I missed”. If you feel that way read a bit about it and give it another shot.
My impression of the movie is that half is the “reality” happening while the other half is a sexual fantasy while she is masturbating. When she can’t get off the nightmare of her reality crumbles and she can’t go on. Its a movie that needs to be seen through a mind fog, like most David Lynch movies. Once you allow him to dictate the rules of how the movie is going to presented to you, then you see the beautiful things that he creates with film.
Him as Miller is so fucking good in The Expanse series. In my mind, his face was always Miller when I was reading the series. He is for sure underrated.
I’ve never read Punisher comics so I have no idea what is more comic accurate but I feel like Thomas Jane is the better “artistic” and thoughtful portrayal of Punisher while Jon Bernthal is the more action hero portrayal. Both good in their own right but for different reasons.
Not sure how I feel about Ray Stevenson or Dolph Lundgren.
Egypts internet infrastructure of 2011 does not equal US internet infrastructure of 2025. The US is too well connected to feasibly turn off the internet. With egypt in 2011 they only had to shut down five ISPs and that shut off the internet in their country.
Non-practical, 2010 Ford Focus RS Mk2, had to sell it when I got a bonus family and started to commute 300 km almost every day.
Practical, 2018 Volvo V90 CC, perfect in every way, except that the rear lights had to be replaced once a year, and one of the buttons on the steering wheel every second year.
First car I bought for myself in college was a 2016 Volvo S60 with 110,000 miles on it after the car my parents got me threw the timing belt on the way to class. It’s tiny as hell, but I love that car. Now, after a few years, we’re pushing 200,000 miles and the only thing it ever needed besides regular maintenance is an oil pan gasket. I have a kid now and I can’t even fit a car seat in the back seat without moving the front seat all the way forward. I know I have to get rid of it soon and it breaks my heart.
There are old movies that have aged much better, like The Man in the White Suit and Colossus: The Forbin Project. These should be the ones we call classics.
As an alternative approach you can look into ansible. As opposed to making a system backup you can define your system configuration as code that you can redeploy with it.
Yeah but I had a hard time setting things up manually (docker), so port that to ansible would be quite the job I guess (especially nginx), and I’m toying with the idea to compile Lemmy from scratch so eventually I could help one day.
YNAB is a web app and mobile app. It’s beauty is that it helps you look FORWARD, instead of tracking your PAST spending.
It’s not much use to see that you spent too much last month, again. Instead, YNAB helps you know what your average expenses are and lets you set aside meaningful amounts for each kind of expense = that’s what we call a BUDGET.
Yes, it has a cost. Yes, it’s ironic to spend money on a tool to save money. But here’s the thing: it really works! For me, it’s easily worth the cost.
I second this. I feel silly paying for it, but if you (and your spouse, if applicable) totally buy into their system, it’s a way of life. The biggest thing is how it sets up purposeful sinking funds (instead of just “savings”) - every dollar has a job. Now when we have major expenses, it’s like - meh! Water heater went out? No sweat, home maintenace got you covered. And if it doesn’t, you roll with the punches and transfer it from some other category.
Using YNAB’s sinking funds helped me get out of my considerable divorce debt. They’re like envelopes you put money into ahead of time, for every single category/thing you want to spend on or save for.
If you need to spend more than is in the envelope, you must transfer from another envelope first
If a bill is higher than expected, transfer money from another envelope
If you want to make an impulse purchase that doesn’t fit an envelope, make mine and transfer money in from an existing one
And so on. It’s a great system, and I continue to use it even though I’m now debt free, except for my monthly bills and car lease payment.
Yup. The ease of use for my wife and us being able to check our own funds real time has made it invaluable. I’m sure! there ways i could do it myself but she’s gotta be able to use it.
Same here. I see a lot of people complaining gabout paying for it, but it’s solid software, and worth the money. It’s helped my wife and I manage our finances and we never argue about money. That’s worth a lot of money IMO.
