NakariLexfortaine, in Those of you with lesser-known types of jobs...what do you do?

This is an absolutely boring one, but did you know part of your seatbelt, right now, could just be colored in?

How about your seat cover? Your steering wheel? Some poor bastard had to go get that out of stock, bring it into repair, go over the entire lot, and take a special pencil to color in those little scratches, or mark it as unrepairable.

I was that bastard for awhile. It sucked. 10 hours going over whatever needed checking that day. An “exciting” day meant a defect hit the line and we needed to hunt it down, hopefully without stopping production.

“Repair” can cover a lot of things, and that was the worst repair work I’ve ever done.

ALostInquirer,

Some poor bastard had to go get that out of stock, bring it into repair, go over the entire lot, and take a special pencil to color in those little scratches, or mark it as unrepairable.

…This is so simple it’s making me ask to be sure…This specific repair gig was…Coloring in scratches?

NakariLexfortaine,

For the most part, all for customer-visible auto parts.

Other team got anything mechanical. We were purely visual.

ALostInquirer,

Huh, that does seem like it could get pretty mindnumbing. Thanks for the reply, hope you’re at something better these days!

TheFriar,

Now I work in landmine production.

AeroLemming, in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?

Just sharing my opinion: I’m not a fan of these kinds of posts. You’re obviously not the asshole and it feels like you just posted this for validation. There is no ambiguity here and the post definitely gives off reddit-esque, “AITA for leaving my boyfriend of 2 months after he cheated on me with 9 people and stole a family heirloom worth $200,000 to fund his heroin addiction?” vibes.

elbarto777,

“Am I the asshole for now allowing strangers to kick me in the nuts every day?”

SmokingFurry, (edited )

I was just mad because I had a few people telling me I was a dick, smart-ass, asshole, ect. Just for telling them no. I thought maybe I was being unreasonable.

However I get what you’re saying.

KISSmyOS,

The issue probably wasn’t you telling them no, but the way you did it.

AeroLemming, (edited )

That makes sense. They just sound lazy and upset that you aren’t doing their jobs anymore. The fact that management sided with you says a lot.

can, (edited )

Might I suggest !vent?

SmokingFurry,

I’m sorry 😞 I didn’t know that was a community. I also really did want to know if i did something wrong, but I do see that as a better fit.

can,

Oh no don’t apologize. Your post did well here. Just sharing another community.

Iamdanno, in Those of you with lesser-known types of jobs...what do you do?

I stumbled into the field of construction cost estimating, because I wasn’t watching where I was going, and it has been good to me. There’s only an education/certification requirement for the companies that do the largest commercial projects (at least in my region). However, there’s a pretty large job market because there are a ton of smaller commercial & residential builders.

I’ll never be wealthy, but I make a decent living, and my work/life balance is good. I primarily work in the office, but get out in the field enough to keep it from getting boring. There is also a good ability to move up into project management, which can pay better, but also has a higher stress level in general.

Zippit, in What are your thoughts on the concept of having faith in a Higher Power but choosing to distance oneself from established religious doctrines?

It’s cool. I come from a religious background that I questioned all the time, even when my family focused only on teaching us the wholesome beautiful stuff, it’s still hard to be on board with the rest or how other people interpret it.

So I’ve decided to quit. It’s still hard, but I do still believe in a higher power. All the rest… I don’t think God cares about head scarves or sex or alcohol,… Just live your life the way you want to and you’ll be okay.

ki77erb,

This is kind of where I’m at in life at 40. I grew up in the Christian church but as an adult, I see so much hate, intolerance, oppression and exploitation. I’m a lover of science to my core and I also believe in a higher power. I just choose to keep that mostly to myself in my day-to-day life.

Zippit,

Same, 44, but Muslim background :) I don’t know why but your view makes me so happy, like I’m not the only one… Let’s just live our lives in peace and I agree. We have to figure out who we are and what we stand for as a ‘human’ without interference, so keeping that to ourselves (offline) makes it easier in this timeline. Let’s figure it out first and then we can go from there.

forrgott,

When I turned forty, I decided Jesus fasting for forty days and nights was just an allegory for how you don’t really find out who you really are until you’re over the hill! ;-)

I dont know if its really “Lesser Known”, but pest control is a very interesting field to work in and isnt often talked about in many circles.

Its essentially future proof, as we’re always going to have pests. Its one of those jobs where its the same enough every day that you get a little better, but different enough from call to call to keep you challenged and stay interested.

I wished that I had even considered it an open back in High School and gone to college/university to actually study pests in an academic setting, and be able to participate in some of the groundbreaking work taking place currently.

smashboy,

Has it ever happened that you accidentally took some pests (like bed bugs or cockroaches) home in your clothes or bag and infected your own home with it?

justhach, (edited )
@justhach@lemmy.world avatar

Nah. I mean, it can happen, and really only with bedbugs, but only if you’re not careful.

Roaches have no interest in being on your person, so.its not like they’re going to hitch a ride home with you. If I were to, say, take home a cardboard box from a heavily infested unit, then maybe (they loooove corrugated boxes), but that fall under “not careful”.

Bed bugs are pretty much the same. I mean, if you give a bear hug to a mattress that is heavily infested, then there is a chance that one could make it onto you and you bring it home, but theyre actually not that great at holding on (they are not like ticks where they latch on).

My only precaution is an ocular patdown of myself when I leave a unit, and as soon as I get home, my uniform goes into the dryer on High for 40 minutes to kill anything in the off chance I brought a bed bug or an egg home with me.

kux, in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?

it might be unfair to ask as this is just based on your username but:

do they resent you for taking smoke breaks?

do they know you’re a furry?

SmokingFurry,

I actually quit smoking 6 months ago. No only my close friends and fiancee know I’m a furry because when I call myself a “furry” it’s just a persona for like anime conventions and stuff. Not huge into the community.

Valmond, in Is Lemmy as a platform sustainable?

I run lemmy.mindoki.com on a pc I built from spare parts (40€ dell plus for fun I got a hexa core for 50-ish and swapped out the celeron gold), only new “expensive” thing is the mechanical hard drive I guess but it’s really not needed. I had it laying around and there were already an SSD. I also had the website so no hidden cost there either.

So it heats up my bedroom (but not enough, so the electricity cost is nil ATM).

I don’t really have users though 😅

enragedzeus05,

Did you follow some sort of guide. I have some spare dell 730xd in my barn I wouldn’t mind tossing into my rack again. I just don’t have a clue on setting up an instance. I would also have to get this thing on its own vlan for obv reasons. Or a DMZ.

Valmond,

No plan just moving ahead one error after another :-D

I was fresh to dockers, nginx, setting up a certificate for Https… but eventually it happened.

The community helped me a lot too.

snownyte, in Has Nintendo lost it's magic or is it just now waking up and making good games again - my thoughts included, but what are the views of Lemy users?
@snownyte@kbin.social avatar

Nintendo's first party games, their top priority is to make games as fun as possible. Looking for a Mario game to be 'good' in the standards of what you consider to be good, is like hoping one day a Kirby game becomes soulslike because you felt they're too easy. The thing with Mario games is that, everyone is going to have a handful of Mario games that they like and they'll have some that didn't do it for them. I personally think Super Mario World is some of the best well-packaged Mario games around and I think Mario Teaches Typing is hot garbage.

GONADS125, (edited ) in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?

Nah, definitely not the asshole. It’s pretty clear that they are just upset by no longer having their laziness enabled.

One important component of assertiveness that I taught to my former clients was that everyone has an inherent right to refusal. You can say no, and you’re not obligated to provide any justification.

Obviously you ought to provide context when appropriate and in work situations if you want to keep your job. But I was in similar situations where I would refuse leadership’s direction on reasonable grounds/different department’s duty. I would not let notorious department heads throw me under the bus, and I’d save emails to call them out on their bullshit in the email chain they lied/blamed me. I would refuse orders to over-bill and call out managers/leadership trying to push us grunts to commit medicaid fraud/waste, even in the middle of their meetings announcing the directives.

I wasn’t liked by those toxic people in the organization, but they learned respect/fear me and a lot of my peers/my team would tell me they appreciated me speaking up when they were afraid to. My supervisor told me after I had her come into our boss’ office with me to confront our boss over unwarranted criticism about me. Afterwards my supervisor told me: “I wish I could talk to leadership like that… but I’m too afraid to lose my job.”

I was never fired but I did leave the job when I got really sick with covid + RSV + pneumonia, a secondary bacterial infection in my lungs, pleurisy, and then long covid. The healthcare industry in my region was so strained, we had so many people quit due to toxic leadership/over-worked/burned out, and the policy was not hiring replacements and instead pushing the load on the remaining employees. I probably would’ve quit if I hadn’t gotten sick.

But I’m proud that I always stood by my principles even when it meant disobeying/confronting superiors. My stubbornness and threshold for confrontation also made me a damn good client advocate. That was what I was most known for. I kept residential care and assisted living facilities in check, hotlining them and aiding state government investigations. It was usually stealing client funds or meds, but I also uncovered neglect and abuse.

I can be wrong and an ass at times, just like all of us. But if I feel strongly convicted about something, peer-pressure or fear of losing my job won’t stop me from holding my ground.

I think you’re doing the right thing standing your ground. I would appreciate you being the one to put yourself on the line for my benefit as well, if I worked in your department. That is a quality I would want in my manager. Rather than rolling over and accepting additional work/disruptions to your department’s actual duties.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in Why does lemmy seem better for engagement and conversation then (I meant than) Mastodon

I don’t know, but I’m about a year into Mastodon and haven’t found a single person to follow and interact with on a regular basis. I signed up during the surge so they specifically told me to go for the masto.a1 instance because it was the only one not overloaded, and I can see why. Currently I use my profile there as a kind of quasi-storage, as it’s not like it doesn’t work.

rob299,

if you like anime you can try Sakurajima.moe, the staff and users on that particular instance are conversaters.

shinigamiookamiryuu,

Do I have to re-register to get into it?

rob299,

if it’s a different instance.

Bebo,

You can migrate from your old instance to a new one

shinigamiookamiryuu,

How does one do that on here?

Bebo,

To clarify, I was talking about migration on Mastodon. There isn’t a migration option on lemmy yet. I have heard that migration function on lemmy is on the pipeline, though not sure exactly what it would entail (as in whether posts and comments would be migrated or not, since on Mastodon you can migrate with only your followers as far as I know).

Turious, in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?

I can’t imagine a universe where what you did makes you an asshole.

SmokingFurry,

Well I have 4 women complaining about it. One called me a dick to my face and said “You always complain about doing your job.”

One complained that I was being a smartass by saying they weren’t busy so they should have done it.

One complained I called them out for giving us the wrong information on a product to load in a customer’s car.

The other just doesn’t like me. 😕

morphballganon,

Them calling you a dick to your face for you not doing their job is an HR write-up. Do that.

You want to know why they disrespect you? Because they haven’t faced any consequences for doing so.

SmokingFurry,

That’s the thing. We don’t have a HR that handles that kind of thing. It’s up to the store managers, which is all family. One of the girls called my coworker a asshole for not being gentle enough with a buggy of paint. The consequences, you ask? An apology to me and my coworker. I never recieved one and my coworker never told me if he got one and refuses to talk about it because “she was probably upset so I’m not worried about it.”

Steinawitz,

The Hyperion books by Dan Simmons.
